I honestly thought that it was a matte black pipe.

Thanks a lot!

My roommate told me I have Yoda hands earlier tonight... O.o

sand works just as well as salt and it doesnt dissolve.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Salt doesn't dissolve in isopropyl alcohol either.

[–]stalk_of_fennel 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sure it does... isopropyl is cut with water.. either 50%, 30% or 10%. might not see to much of it dissolve in 10%.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That is why you use 90% isopropyl.

[–]stalk_of_fennel 0 points1 point ago

or just use sand

I have a jar of iso alcohol and I just leave my bowl in there fcor a day and rinse and smoke. I just keep reuing the alcohol. I replace after while but it lasts.

[–]Radar_Monkey 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I use rubbing alcohol as well. Just let it soak and everything breaks down and rinses out easily.

[–]snotboogie 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can use Bacardi 151, or grain alcohol, as well. I find that rubbing alcohol and isopropyl can leave very chemical tastes. Especially if it's a bubbler and there are some nooks that hold on to resin.

[–]tonitereprise 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting, I just picked up some grain for green dragon. Will give it a shot.

[–]snotboogie -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I've even used bourbon, which was tasty. My bubbler always tastes like whatever I clean it with, because there is resin in these corners I can't get.

[–]stevenunya 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

PROTIP: Take 1/4 cup or so of isopropyl alcohol and heat it up in the microwave for 30 seconds. Then pour it in to your piece along w/ your epsom salt or whatever you're using for an abrasive and shake. I'll bet you never have nasty resin in those tough to clean corners again!

[–]tonitereprise 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is this safe to use even for bubblers that have a no boil advisory?

[–]stevenunya 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A bubbler with a no boil advisory? That's a new one on me and I've been on the glass scene for over 10 years. If the glass couldn't withstand extreme temperature changes, it would break from having a lighter held to it repeatedly. Next time you're out glass shopping, make sure you get borosilicate (Pyrex) glass.

[–]tonitereprise 2 points3 points ago

Here's my bubbler, it's made by Lurch.

http://imgur.com/XXd9e&kWjAW&rgdvel

Can you see any reason why it shouldn't be boiled?

[–]stevenunya 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It appears to be boro. I'd say you're good to go. At your own risk of course. Honestly, boiling is a stinky pain in the ass. In the end, you'll need to clean out the pan you're boiling it in with alcohol. I recommend just cutting to the chase and using alcohol in your bowl. If your worried about boiling it, just buy enough 91% or better isopropyl alcohol and just soak it a day or two. I just cleaned out a sherlock and 2 glass on glass slides using boiling 91% iso from the microwave. They look brand new with less than five minutes of fuss.

I actually submerged the bag which contained the pipe in a sink of hot water to raise the temperature of the alcohol-salt mixture. I figured it would increase the amount of salt that would dissolve in the alcohol and perhaps soften up the resin. It worked beautifully. That and a little vigorous shaking really did the trick.

[–]ryant9878 -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you can also just use boiling water...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

wouldn't suggest it. my roommate poured boiling water into a bong of mine to clean it and it fractured the damn thing all over. couldn't even tell until we put water in it and it started leaking.

[–]ryant9878 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ive been cleaning my pipes and bongs in this manner for nearly ten years, and this has never happened to me.

[–]darmon 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was tasked with babysitting my friends two bongs. One I dropped in the sink while cleaning (+11 stitches to my right ring finger, -1 bong.)

Months later, I was cleaning the other in my neighbors sink one evening, and as it turns out the water comes out of their faucet near boiling. I held the bong under the faucet for less than 3 seconds and I'd say a cup of water got inside the glass, but that was sufficient to start a chain reaction of cracking down the tube, around and under the chamber, and back up the tube. The bong survived in one piece, but I have been too saddened by the whole ordeal to see if the cracks cause it to leak; I'm pretty sure they will, so it's just been collecting dust because I don't know what to do with it. I've contemplated sealing with fish tank sealant, but that will look bad.

The friend who lent me his bongs, upon hearing of the damage to the 2nd one, commented "giving bongs to [me] is a good way to practice Buddhist-like detachment from possessions."

[–]ryant9878 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you guys must keep your bongs in the fridge?

[–]darmon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

LOL no way man, room temp for sure. Both times, I was cleaning the piece immediately prior to using them. A real buzz kill when you want to smoke, and you go smash a piece instead.

[–]haesuse 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

HA! Remind me to never let you babysit my pieces.

[–]haesuse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same here. But I don't "pour" boiling water over it, as this person suggested. I have a pot going on the stove, and drop the thing in it. Let it sit, take it out, and shake it, and everything just comes right out. BE CAREFUL THOUGH. Boiling hot liquid reefer resin will burn you BAD.

[–]ryant9878 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my problem with your method of dumping the pipe in the pot of boiling water is that it can A: smell very bad, and B: leave resin residue all over your pot

[–]haesuse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Those are absolutely both true. I have 1 single pot that, for 10 years now, has only been used for pipe cleaning. It has a black rim around the edge where the liquid resin has built up. No amount of scrubbing will clean it. I've tried everything.

Also, the smell is vicious. But it's gone in under an hour. So, unless you live with parents, or people who give a shit about such things, it's no big deal.

Ways to fix the problems you listed: Have one pot you always use for pipes (hell, get it at the thrift store, if you want). Light incense while you do the deed. Problems solved.

:)

[–]ryant9878 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i use a pair of grill tongs to hold the pipe with over the sink, and pour in small amounts of boiling water at a time, swirling it around to get the stickyness unstuck, rinse and repeat till all the water is gone. and youre left with a very clean pipe.

[–]haesuse 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I use tongs too. But I use them to dip the pipe in the pot, and pull it back out. Then I swirl, like you, over a sink. Very similar. Works like a charm. :)

That's a damn good idea.

evaporate the alcohol and it leaves some sweet oil

I would feel safe with that oil rather than the isopropyl. At least the bacardi is meant for consumption.

exactly

I've actually got a bottle of pure cane alcohol from Mexico that's about 97.5%. I was going to try that next time.

[–]smokin4fake 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats why I usually rinse the bowl with water and let it dry before I smoke.

Of course, sometimes I'll give the whole piece a little rinse with mouthwash to make it minty fresh.

[–]sparkyteck 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When the alcohol gets really dirty, heat it up to evaporate the alcohol and it leaves some sweet oil.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yikes, if you're going to do this, be careful not to start a fire!

[–]sparkyteck 1 point2 points ago

Yes, do not try with an open flame! I have seen heating elements used from baseboard heaters, to produce a low temp boil and good ventallation is a must.

i know this is blatantly obvious but thats a Texas blown glass piece. Live in Texas or just sport our glass? They make some really nice pieces for being such mass produced.

[–]Son_of_Hades[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm from DFW, but these pieces come from Austin, where I'm sure you know the best glassware is made. This is the second pipe of this configuration I've owned, both of which were Texas Blown. They smoke wonderfully.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Come to San Diego and we shall have a laugh and a smoke, not necessarily in that order. :D

Fyi - acetone is one of the best chemicals to use when cleaning glass. I've tried isopropyl/denatured alcohol, but acetone takes the cake. Just don't use it on plastic unless you want your plastic melted.

[–]Son_of_Hades[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In small doses, isopropyl alcohol seems like a harmless thing to introduce into your body. But acetone, something that melts paint off of fingernails, doesn't seem so harmless to me. Perhaps the most natural solution is to use ethanol. We'll see how that goes in the future.

[–]Horger 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah but it evaporates super quickly. It will dry out your skin/nails if you get it on your bare skin, but its not so bad. Just don't ingest it for christ's sake and you'll be alright :)

Ethanol works fine as well, but it just doesn't have the umph that acetone does :D

I would love to have cleaned your pipe for you. One of my hobbies is doing that with mine to see how much resin I can get from it. It sucks smoking it but it's better than going without when the weed man is out.

[–]Jared_Jff 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

why would you dissolve all that res?

[–]Jyggalag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dissolving then leaving the alcohol out to evaporate is much more comprehensive than scraping. I'm not sure if that's what he did, though.

[–]Son_of_Hades[S] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did not. Considered it momentarily, but I didn't want to smoke the iso soaked res later. Maybe if it was ethanol... I'll consider it again when I clean this pipe in the future.

[–]DecadeEnd 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

100% isopropyl will evaporate just as well as ethanol (if not better). What you don't want to do is smoke any isohash that has salt in it.

[–]Zenthor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Another solution that works is boiling sugar water. Boiling a pipe is risky and it takes a little more time to get all the resin out, but if you don't have isopropyl alcohol on hand and can't be arsed to get to the store, it gets the job done.

[–]420bassist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sweet pipe. me and my buddy we're out of isopropyl so we used vodka with epsom salt. worked just as well. Its just a solvent + an abrasive. Don't worry it wasnt expensive vokda

[–]haesuse 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Even the most dirt cheap vodka is 10 times as expensive as isopropyl. Lazy asses.

[–]420bassist 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

maybe so, but we used less than half a cup. $8 750ml $16 1.75L. Burnetts Vodka. Quadruple distilled. the top shelf of bottom shelf
