There goes all their fucking tourism.

Well, maybe not the fucking tourism, if the red light district is still allowed.

Amsterdam is a beautiful city. Did I know that before I went there? Fuck no. What brought me in was the pot...what kept me there for a week instead of a couple of days was the atmosphere and the actual city.

Same here. Agreed, the Reichsmuseum (sp?), Van Gogh Museum, touring the canals, Anne Frank's house -- all are well worth visiting. still, their attraction won't hold a candle to the "narco-tourism" that initially brings people in.

Rijksmuseum

FTFY.

Reichsmuseum would probably be about some German guy with a mustache.

Agreed. I would just add to that amazing beer & a great city to spend a new years eve.

Agreed here as well. It's one of my favorite cities on the planet. Such friendly people, nice restaurants (as long as you don't eat Dutch food), the museums, and it's probably more of a cultural melting pot than NYC is.

Whoa. Amsterdam is a pretty amazing international city, but please, you can't seriously say it's more of a cultural melting pot than NYC.

That's why I'm not worried about it.

This will last one year, tops. They'll lose millions. People don't go for the tulips.

Plus, Fucking is in Austria.

Ahh ... but bullshit stories like this are designed to boost tourism. They have been pulling this for the last 15 years. "Hurry up and book that trip before its too late!" Probably comes from the Amsterdam tourist bureau directly.

It WILL NEVER happen!

[–]tetrisattack 1 point2 points ago

I'd be very concerned about this if I were Dutch. From what I saw during my trip to Amsterdam, tourists are the majority of the customers in these places. Banning foreigners would effectively put the coffee shops out of business. That's probably the government's ultimate goal.

AFAIK a couple years ago they closed a majority of the 'windows' (basically rooms legal prostitutes rent) in the red light district, so I won't be surprised if that is gone soon as well.

Backed by the far-right party of anti-immigrant politician Geert Wilders, the coalition government that came into power last year announced plans to curb drug tourism as mart of a nationwide program to promote health and fight crime.

It's shit like this right wing.

[–]powercow 14 points15 points ago

dont forget it is the left that want to "nanny you"

it isnt it amazing that we get attacked by some radical right wing idiots and the entire planet goes right wing in response.(and sorry but al quada is right wing, they believe in religion in gov, id in schools, and are intolerant of people who dont believe the way they do)

You dont need radical idiots to fight other radical idiots.

The bottom line is that both the right and the left are staffed with authoritarian asshats who want to impose their belief system on everyone. Vote Libertarian vote for freedom.

[–]IMJGalt 3 points4 points ago

You are so right. Government really should be our all knowing daddy, savior and arbiter of all that is good and correct./s

[–]Monkey_Time -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So it's all or nothing? Either we are communists or free market capitalists? That is a pretty warped view of things. Typical libertarian speak that is used to get the masses to vote for Republicans. You are spreading bullshit propaganda. Maybe some day you'll wake up, but I fear you are beyond help.

[–]IMJGalt 1 point2 points ago

Government controls entirely too much of our lives. I do not want a central authority that is capable of using force to tell me I cannot fire up a doob.

I went to Amsterdam on my 21st birthday (2 1/2 years ago) and spent a ludicrous $3500 in 8 days. It was an amazing trip and I have always thought of Amsterdam as one of the only places that I would seriously consider returning to (as opposed to spending my vacation money going somewhere new). If they ban pot for tourists, forget it.

[–]eatmycow 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck, how did you have $3500 to spend on you 21st? I'm genna be 21 soon and I think I've got the least money I've had my whole life so far.

[–]krangksh 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you have a good relationship with VISA, they let you take out thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars without question. By 21 my credit card limit was already over $7500.

To be clear, I still haven't finished resurfacing from my credit card debt.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand why people spend more money than they can afford

[–]Grizzleyt 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To buy pot in Amsterdam, obviously.

[–]thebillgonadz 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's easier than you think. I thought this exact thing when I was given a credit card, yet I still put myself in a decent amount of debt. Nothing insane, but it was still more than I should have found myself in.

[–]TrptJim 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because at some point in your life it may be worth it. I built an amazing amount of debt in my 20's that took quite a while to pay off, but I wouldn't take it back for anything. I got to do crazy things before I got too old to want/be able to do them.

[–]krangksh -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you, this summarizes it well. The real issue is being too old to want to do this kind of stuff. By now I'm pretty much a no-nonsense stern adult, but I'm glad that even from underneath a mountain of debt I can look back on myself and go "man, I used to do some seriously crazy shit."

Who wants to look back on their youth and go "man, I was going to go to the 21st Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam on my 21st birthday, but then I decided it was too expensive so I stayed home instead"?

[–]papajohn56 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I prefer to go "Man I saved up for this so it's even more worth it knowing I'm not in hock to a bank for some weed"

[–]krangksh 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you are super depressed, it's hard to think about tomorrow. It's easy, however, to say "fuck thinking about money, money is bullshit". Especially when you are far from the end of your rope.

About 9 months ago I reached the end, and it was a raw deal, but at least by then I wasn't depressed anymore and I could handle it. Now I'm running my own business and I'm on track to pay my (amazing $22,000) debt by September. As shitty as it is to be this far in debt and to finally realize how much money $20,000 is when I have to earn it just to be back at zero, I was in no condition to deal with this 2 years ago and I'm glad I didn't have to.

[–]papajohn56 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hope that small amount of weed was worth paying for for years afterwards.

In case it's not clear, I didn't spent $3500 on weed. I spent $3500 on an amazing trip to Europe on my 21st birthday with my friends, which included the novelty of being able to buy weed legally over the counter. I wouldn't say I spent more than $200 personally on weed, probably more like $150. I spent the rest on hotel and airfare, food, souvenirs, gifts, transportation, etc. And yes, of all of the money I have cavalierly wasted in my days, this trip sits near the top of the list for most worthwhile.

It'll get thrown over by the EU.

There's a couple of regions in Spain in protracted trouble with the EU because they give discounts to holders of resident papers that the EU says is discriminating against other EU citizens. They might be able to ban non-EU passport holders from the shops but not EU passport holders.

[–]SETHW 2 points3 points ago

unfortunately this already passed EU scrutiny last year. the idea is about 5 years in the making. :(

since cannabis is technically illegal, and only "tolerated" by the police having a directive to look the other way, legally speaking it is NOT protected by the EU commerce regulations.

since cannabis is technically illegal, and only "tolerated" by the police having a directive to look the other way, legally speaking it is NOT protected by the EU commerce regulations.

But it is. The Dutch gov tried to simply ban foreigners from buying, but the EU wouldn't allow that. Free trade and all. This membership system is a different implementation of the same idea specifically to get around the EU.

I did not know the EU had actually approved this approach though.

[–]Carnagh 2 points3 points ago

Yes but think of the booming industry that will form around residents buying weed in cafes and selling it at a markup to tourists in the alley. These cunning entrepreneurs can stake out and defend territory and make even more money in the protection racket! This will CREATE jobs!
