It's technically illegal, but practically nobody cares. It is widely available, and inexpensive.

When I say 'nobody cares', they probably would if you were selling garbage bags of the stuff (though incidentally, a family friend once found 2 garbage bags of weed dumped by the side of the road). But as long as you're just carrying around a small amount for personal use, you'll be fine.

You'll never see sniffer dogs on trains or buses, though they are commonly at the airport.

I heard from a friend once that some police took a sniffer dog down Rundle Mall. According to this friend, they saw someone get caught.

Personally I'd avoid taking that stuff to the airport or down the really major city streets like Rundle Mall or Hindley, especially during the Fringe when the police will be out in force. But other than that there are never any problems.

I'm sure it does happen on occasion, though I've never seen it. That's why they have the dogs, after all.

That said, I know friends who have walked around with a small amount in their pockets all through Fringe (though not opening night, that gets crazy), and never been caught. On another occasion, a cop found a small amount on my friend, but let it go since it was clearly not enough to sell to anyone and my friend was not disorderly or driving. I guess it just depends on the cop and the atmosphere.

There are also sniffer dogs on train station on fridays/saturday night sometimes. What are they are sniffing for, I have no idea.

Don't think in all honesty it's the explosives as they were sniffing passengers coming down from a train and going to the city. Haven't seen anyone cought per se, but not surprisingly, it always stopped and sniffed your typical pot head guy.

There have been quite a few sniffer dogs at the train station & mall lately.

As a note, the dogs are only trained to detect when they're given a command.

Weed is damn near everywhere in Adelaide. Personal use is basically decriminalised and growing small amounts for personal use was decriminalised for a long time, but is now illegal again I believe. You shouldn't have any trouble with police about it, unless you're standing in front of them smoking it like an idiot. Go to damn near any venue that has a beer garden, you'll smell it eventually. I'm sure you'll be able to work something out from there. ;)

there is a difference between legal and decriminalised. if something is decriminalised (eg weed) it doesnt mean it is legal. it is still illegal, it is just not classed as a criminal activity. which means if you get caught you get a fine, instead of having to appear in court and get a criminal record.

just to expand on your point: it is illegal obviously, but in SA it is decriminalised, so if you are caught with like 'personal use' amounts, its just a fine. no court, no record.

Yeah, I'm doing a Fringe Show. I'm from Melbourne and the cops are fairly lax about policing it although I've seen the occasional sniffer dog on trains. My mate wanted to take some on the plane which feels like a really bad idea. I'm trying to persuade him that we'll find some easily enough when we're in town.

Yeah, bringing it on the plane would be a bad idea. The people at the airport are pretty strict about bringing any fresh organic stuff in so they'd of course be even more strict about bringing drugs. Do you know anyone in Adelaide that smokes? If not, it might be a little difficult finding a dealer who's willing to sell to people he doesn't know.

I've never seen a sniffer dog in the airport before (and I'm pretty sure that would be the only way for them to detect it unless it really, really stands out in an x-ray) but if you got caught then you'd probably get in quite a bit of trouble.

I'll say this much. My partner and I had the cops around my place because we had a fight and the neighbours freaked out and thought it was serious. Anyway, we had a full bag and a pipe on the coffee table, next to an expty bag of doritos, they looked at us, rolled their eyes, and told us to be quiet.

Adelaide ents unite! My stance on weed? Legalise!

It's already decriminalised here (small amounts), but I'd like to see people be able to grow plants for themselves.

What I'd really like to see, is more activism from Adelaide ents. I can't do this all by myself :)
