I like Dwarf Fortress, killing the nobles is pretty much required at certain points of the game.

[–]CatalystParadox 1 point2 points ago

I love how so many of the community forts/succession forts turn this into some kind of revolution in the writeups, too. And when dwarves are "On Break" when they are needed for something important it ends up being written as a worker's strike. Glorious.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

dwarf fortress, tribes 2

both are free.

[–]jaki_cold 1 point2 points ago

I love Tribes 2 :3

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

do you still play?

[–]jaki_cold 0 points1 point ago

No... BUT I COULD.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

[–]The Anarchist FighterLouisLingg 6 points7 points ago

Reality: Shittiest game ever.

[–]CatalystParadox 1 point2 points ago

That one is really frustrating, but for some reason I keep coming back to it. It just seems to go on and on though, and it doesn't seem like it has any real goal. Can anyone give me any hints?

Edit: Cheat codes also accepted.

[–]The Anarchist FighterLouisLingg 0 points1 point ago

shit i dunno. uhhhh, Steal more shit maybe? That usually gets me to the next level for a bit.

[–]CatalystParadox 0 points1 point ago

Hmm.... I dont think its a cheat code if you might not get away with it.

[–]The Anarchist FighterLouisLingg 1 point2 points ago

FUCK.....game over again.

[–]iWorshipTheSun 1 point2 points ago

Eat trash.

[–]CatalystParadox 0 points1 point ago

I've tried this before. Does it count as a cheat code?

Still doesn't give me a goal... how u mine 4 fish?

[–]subvertc 4 points5 points ago*

Minecraft.

And lots of ROMS. (EDIT: using emulators)

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh, like for emulators, duh, I thought you meant the guy from DS9. But which emulators do you like the most, which do you recommend?

[–]subvertc 5 points6 points ago

ZSNES hands down. Super Nintendo emulator.

GFCE Ultra NES, VBA Express and Mupen64Plus (Ubuntu OS)

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

ZSNES hands down. Super Nintendo emulator.

Yeah, soon nostalgia for those will go away I think, more emulators can come out across a wider amount of PCs and eventually people will say the same thing about the PS2 being as nostalgic as the SNES used to be, as the PS3's growing ISO torrent traffic only serves to scare PS4 into new security measures.

[–]rechelon 4 points5 points ago

Hella Starcraft 2. But only in week-long streaks every few months.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh god that sounds awesome, how long are these matches, a few months?

[–]evansawred 3 points4 points ago

... I play wrestling games.

I love video games but while I'm at school I only have time to play games in short bursts and wrestling games are good for that. Also wrestling rules.

[–]SpicyCage 3 points4 points ago

Dear god.

Revenge flashbacks.

[–]evansawred 2 points3 points ago

Muahaha. I still play WWF No Mercy, mods have gotten pretty sweet.

[–]SpicyCage 1 point2 points ago

So I've seen. If I had a way to hook up a 64 controller to my PC, it'd be ON.

[–]evansawred 0 points1 point ago

I'll admit, playing with a keyboard kinda sucks =\

[–]Mutualizm 1 point2 points ago

What if Kharma returns to win the Rumble?

[–]evansawred 1 point2 points ago

I would mark out for any female wrestler getting that big a push.

But I'm banking on Jericho coming out as #30 while #28 and #29 "accidentally" eliminate each other.

[–]Mutualizm 1 point2 points ago

I would mark out for any female wrestler getting that big a push.

Any? Any?

Number 30 is about to come out. Chris Jericho is alone in the ring, catching his breath. Three... two... one...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogcxZU5mhcc

She eliminates him to win.

You really mark out?

[–]evansawred 0 points1 point ago

You know she'd find a way to eliminate him with a roll-up.

What I meant is that I would love it because it might mean they would finally be taking the Divas division seriously. Although if it were Kelly Kelly then I think they'd just be laughing at it. Right now it would have to be Kharma, Beth or Natalya (and realistically right now it would just come down to Kharma and Beth).

[–]Mutualizm 0 points1 point ago

Sara Del Rey surprise entry.

Or MsChif. I ♥ MsChif.

[–]evansawred 0 points1 point ago

Del Rey is getting a big push against Quackenbush right now, isn't she? Maybe I'm confusing things, I don't really follow Chikara (I know, I know, I really need to).

[–]Mutualizm 0 points1 point ago

I think so, but I haven't watched much Chikara in a while either. I was just saying it would be awesome to suddenly see someone on the level of SDR show up in WWE and not be forced to have boring, two-minute matches.

[–]evansawred 0 points1 point ago

That would be awesome.

You should come post at /r/squaredcircle sometime!

[–]Mutualizm 0 points1 point ago

I'm subscribed. I've posted in there a couple times, just not as actively as here.

[–]gatsby137 1 point2 points ago

I had no idea what you people are talking about, so I googled MsChif--a microbiologist who wrestles in her spare time. Wow!

[–]ShotCoplifting 0 points1 point ago

I honestly really enjoyed the ICP wrestling game for ps2

[–]evansawred 0 points1 point ago

Haha Backyard Wrestling? It was fun.

[–]jaki_cold 1 point2 points ago

Sudden nostalgia for playing Backyard Basketball with my cousin :'3

[–]Avant-hecatomb 1 point2 points ago

Solace. It's free, it's aesthetically beautiful, and it quotes Rumi. That's all I give a fuck about. It doesn't really have much to do with anarchism in particular, but I think that every anarchist should be cultured in things like art, music, and poetry. And even games that combine these elements.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

It doesn't have much to do with anarchism because anarchism is pretty much an all-encompassing topic, being without rulers.

[–]withoutrulers 2 points3 points ago

Being me.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVkUvmDQ3HY

You probably get that a lot.

[–]Avant-hecatomb 1 point2 points ago

Everything's relative. >_>

[–]jawndisease 2 points3 points ago

Civ 5.

I have a secret desire to rule the planet with an iron fist.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

We all do. It's what I was hinting at with FreeCiv. ;)

[–]null_radix 5 points6 points ago

open source FTW! im playing battle for wesnoth which is turn based. And Xonontic which is a FPS and the successor to Nexuiz

[–]wasted-in-wi 6 points7 points ago

I play Xonotic a decent amount. I was somewhat involved with nex development back in the day, in fact. Whats your handle? (PM me if you'd prefer) We might have played together, since I often end up seeing the same people on Xon servers.

And yeah I play pretty much exclusively copyleft games, so:

  • Battle for Wesnoth (love this game, me and my SO play it all the time)

  • Warzone 2100

  • Urban Terror

  • Tremelous

  • ActionCube

  • HedgeWars

  • Xonotic

  • FreeCiv (I play this way too much... =P )

  • Widelands

  • MegaGlest

  • recently 0 AD

Hmm.. probably a ton more. I play all of those a decent amount today, they are all good games.

[–]wasted-in-wi 0 points1 point ago

Just have to post again to mention:

  • UFO: Alien Invasion (holy shit is this an addictive, fun game)

(Also SuperTuxKart, Battle Tanks, Frogatto, and Stendhal are all great fun)

[–]null_radix 0 points1 point ago

im just null_radix. im pretty new to the game to

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 2 points3 points ago

I haven't tried Xonontic but this is why I opened up my mouth, to get more games! Thank you.

[–]ty5on 0 points1 point ago

I love Wesnoth. The multiplayer is great and there are so many mods from the community its hard to keep track of them all. I met people from all over the world that you wouldn't often encounter on multiplayer games; China, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka - because all you need is a cheap computer and a Linux install to play.

[–]RosieLalala 3 points4 points ago

Approved :)

I think that that happens to every one who demods themself or is demodded. I doubt that it's just you.

[–]lady_catherine 2 points3 points ago

I play pen and paper rpgs like Vampire the Requiem and Scion.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Ah, the easily distributable game is one of the best. None of this initial hardware cost or software licensees, scratch a character sheet on a spot of bark with a bit of coal. XD But, if not video games, do you agree it's easier to pick up and play pen and paper?

[–]lady_catherine 1 point2 points ago

It depends on the pen and paper game, really. AD&D requires pretty much all 13 books to play it(really, and it's a pain to use PDFs, for the record) for example but something like Vampire the Requiem can be played with only two books and has a much simpler ruleset.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Lately: unreal tournament 2004, defend your castle, for school nostalgia, and Theme Hospital thanks to the top post on that thread.

[–]RiotGrrrl585 3 points4 points ago

I guess everyone knows it from the dispute about my mod nom, but Pokémon.

[–]lady_catherine 2 points3 points ago

Pokemon is awesome, especially if you get really into it and try to EV train.

[–]RiotGrrrl585 1 point2 points ago

You should have seen my IV breeding chart. I had each generation of eggs named alphabetically to keep track of them.

Right now I'm trying to get a living Dex of all unique trainer IDs. Mainly working on the living Dex part, it's a wonderful time-killer at work.

[–]lady_catherine 1 point2 points ago

That's a hell of a challenge. :)

[–]RiotGrrrl585 0 points1 point ago

I keep it all organized with neooffice databases. I have around 25 unique IDs right now, and I'm almost done catching everything catchable in Emerald (it's just grinding from there).

[–]lady_catherine 0 points1 point ago

The worst part about Emerald is that there really isn't any good places to grind. Though I don't think Sapphire and Ruby are any better in that regard.

[–]RiotGrrrl585 0 points1 point ago

There aren't. I'm stuck on Liza and Tate because they have more than just the Lunatone and Solrock and I'm horribly under-leveled.

[–]lady_catherine 0 points1 point ago

Damn. I can't help you there because I haven't played Emerald in ages.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Not everyone here follows those, don't worry.

[–]RiotGrrrl585 3 points4 points ago

"If I can't play Pokémon, I don't want your revolution!" or something.

[–]CatalystParadox 2 points3 points ago

For the bigger commercial stuff, I'm pretty much a sucker for anything published by Bethesda or Bioware, so I'm currently knee-deep in both Skyrim and The Old Republic and loving both - but Mass Effect and Morrowind are old favorites of mine (and New Vegas requires special mention). Does this have anything to do with anarchism? Not exactly, but I'm developing complicated characters whose personalities are evolving in interesting ways due to their interactions with the power structures around them...

For more indy stuff, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft. There will never come a day when I stop finding entertainment in Dwarf Fortress, it is just too rich and interesting, and simply beautiful as a project (completely non-commercial, the creator does it because he wants to, and while he receives donations, he's committed to not letting that shape what he does with the game or force him to alter the design or release schedule for any purpose other than his own pure vision of the game)

I also love civ type games in general - oh, and Tropico (3, I think? the second-to-most-recent-one, that's cheap on steam) is fantastic.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 2 points3 points ago

Tropico

Really, that game was just the opposite of Just Cause. :p EDIT: I gtg, I was going to say more.

[–]CatalystParadox 2 points3 points ago

Something like that. But still provided ample opportunity for despicable behavior, just from a completely opposite side.

Personally I enjoyed playing idealistic but completely misguided rulers trying to implement their vision of some kind of utopia, and of course doing horrible things in the process :P

[–]annihilationist 4 points5 points ago

I'm a big freeciv fan.

[–]RosieLalala 3 points4 points ago

I play Skyrim and I'm trying to play as neutral. This means that both factions are trying to kill me.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

I thought Skryim pretty, but boring, the invisible-dice thing didn't really work for me.

[–]CatalystParadox 0 points1 point ago

I haven't started the civil war plotline just because I am so bitterly undecided as to what side to take. They're all a bunch of fucking fascists... it's just that the Thalmor are just so much MORE SO than the alternatives! So do I side with the relatively-egalitarian but world-spanning and rapidly-turning-to-despotic Empire, or the blatantly-bigoted, provincial, aristocratic and insular ("States' Rights" anyone?) Stormcloaks? My runaway closet-lesbian Orsimer forgewife cannot decide.

[–]RosieLalala 0 points1 point ago

I went Greybeard.

[–]CatalystParadox 0 points1 point ago

That's an option?

I (well, that is to say, my character) find them kinda head-in-the-clouds religious wiffles, that word being one I just made up. I'm not sure I feel good about solving my problems with the world by withdrawing from it... They do know an awful lot of neat tricks I want them to teach me though.

[–]RosieLalala 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. I took their tricks and now unleash them on an unsuspecting world!

I did manage to double-play the "find the redbeard woman" quest so that I won the criminal's trust and respect and at the last minute stabbed them in the back to save her. That felt good.

[–]barriersnowbridges 2 points3 points ago

Minecraft, Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Do you find organizing these games to be a fun way to spend time? Do you put some effort into making Harvest Moon or Animal Crossings more anarchist like? They're farming games right?

[–]konquererz 2 points3 points ago

Assassins Creed, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda. I know, I'm so mainstream. Fuck it, I don't care.

Nothing says fun like assassinating someone who has abused their power. Sneak left across a ridge, cherry bomb to distract the guards. From the balcony landing on the victim simultaneously releasing your hidden blade, bury it to the wrist in his neck.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 3 points4 points ago

It's kind of like shooting the cops in GTA, the feeling of power in those situations.

Legend of Zelda.

Fight the chickens.

[–]konquererz 4 points5 points ago

NO! NO! NO! NO! Do not fuck with the chickens you will not win! EVAR!

[–]Avant-hecatomb 2 points3 points ago

It's too much fun not to fuck with them. One time I literally spent three hours picking up chickens and jumping off the roof so that I hover to the ground. It's fun as fuck.

[–]konquererz 1 point2 points ago

LOL I spent so much time running into kakiriko village in OOT just hacking the chickens until they started attacking me back and then see how long I can survive the poultry onslaught.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

Which is why I chose that to say in /@...

[–]lady_catherine 1 point2 points ago

Fight the chickens.

Chickens in one of the originals could kill you

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

But you can never win, I think.

[–]lady_catherine 1 point2 points ago

Yep.

[–]konquererz 2 points3 points ago

Ocarina of Time's chickens would attack until you A) got out of the immediate vicinity or B)Died a humiliating death and in that one, you cannot win. There are only 6 damn chickens in the whole village but when they attack, its chicken solidarity time, dozens of chickens materialize out of no where.

[–]lady_catherine 2 points3 points ago

I don't remember Ocarina of Time well, I remember the direct sequel, Majora's Mask, but I don't remember chickens in that.

[–]konquererz 2 points3 points ago

That game nearly drove me off the edge. I had so much trouble beating Majoras Mask it wasn't even funny. Well it was to people watching me.

[–]lady_catherine 1 point2 points ago

It's the hardest Zelda game of the series, for sure.

[–]TravellingJourneyman 0 points1 point ago

Harder than the first one? I died probably north of 20 times just getting to the second dungeon in the first one. I don't think I died at all in MM.

[–]lady_catherine 1 point2 points ago

Final Fantasy

What's your favorites? I like FF6 and FF Tactics the best.

[–]konquererz 1 point2 points ago

8 was my favorite, 13 is my second, but 13 part 2 looks to be fantastic. You get to bring monsters into your party. Can't wait.

[–]lady_catherine 1 point2 points ago

8 was my favorite,

At least you're not a FF7 fanboy stuck on the "Sephiroth is so fucking cool" because they fail to realize that Kefka is best FF villain of all time.

I mean really.

Run, run before you get well done!

[–]konquererz 1 point2 points ago

Kefka made me rethink the idea that clowns are cool. I saw a redraw of Kefka that made him look literally, seriously, even stereotypically criminally insane. Sephiroth was pretty cool but seemed right in line with how villians are "supposed to look".

Sin. Sin is the best villian of all time for FF.

EDIT: I really loved VII as well.

[–]lady_catherine 2 points3 points ago

At least Kefka pretty much succeeded in destroying the world. >.>

Sin. Sin is the best villian of all time for FF.

Fair enough.

[–]konquererz 1 point2 points ago

Best line from the entire game. "Theres a reason oppose rhymes with dispose!"

[–]lady_catherine 1 point2 points ago

Son of a submariner! You're right. :)

[–]SuperDuperKing 2 points3 points ago

Republic the revolution is a fun game once you know how it all works. Left 4 dead Deus ex Human revolution, gotta get ready for the dystopian future sometime.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

Dystopia is what you make of it, Utopia is unobtainable.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Dynasty Warriors. Lots and lots and lots of Dynasty Warriors.

[–]vomitisjustskimmilk 2 points3 points ago

Freespace 2

Morals aside, it's one of the best space fighter sims out there.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I can't agree hard enough. I also personally think both Freespace games are a real triumph of storytelling in their genre.

[–]SpicyCage 2 points3 points ago*

Team Fortress 2, anything CastleVania, the Metal Gear series, Left 4 Dead series

Been doing too much reading lately. I think I need a visit from POOTIS SPENCER to lighten my day.

EDIT: I can't believe I forgot! The Legend of Zelda series. Every time I hear the title music on A Link To The Past, I feel like it's time for great justice.

[–]mattmcneany 0 points1 point ago

Red Faction: Guerrilla (THQ so fairly corporate) is really fun in that it's got a GTA feel but you're missions all involve smashing state infrastructure, tanks police HQ, state propaganda, rescuing striking workers, shit like that. The Game feels like it was developed by people who had at least an understanding of revolutionary socialism of some sort.

Also I play AoE:II (Pirate acquisition) over LAN with a few old friends from school. There was this one time a couple of years ago when I lost a game for my team because I was high and decided to build a primitivist agrarian utopia without any military or technology. When my mates ran roughshod over the peaceful villagers might have been the day my inner pacifist died.

[–]adinsx3 2 points3 points ago

I play Magic the Gathering, but mostly on Cockatrice and MWS, because paper magic is too expensive. I draft with paper every once in a while, but that's really it.

I also play a fair bit of tf2, mostly Demoman and Spy.

[–]Socialist_Asshole 2 points3 points ago

I play shitloads of steam games, and it makes me feel guilty. Oh well, they treat their customers well, and as far as I can see, their employees too. Also, Minecraft.

[–]SpicyCage 5 points6 points ago

The folks at Steam are all right by me. Frankly, I think Gabe's possibly an anarcho-capitalist.

Now I know ancap is a bad word around here, but I still think of some branches of ancap philosophy as legit extensions of anarchic thought.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 2 points3 points ago

Is minecraft kinda fun to politicize multiplayer, do you find yourself trying to pull off socialistic policies or capitalistic policies?

[–]TheC0mm0nEnemy 2 points3 points ago

Hahaha I love this, I purposely ran my server with Anarcho-Communism policies. It was awesome to try out and shockingly, it worked beautifully.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

What kind of policies worked, any that didn't?

[–]TheC0mm0nEnemy 3 points4 points ago

Well, here's how we ran it. Everyone had their jobs (Miner, engineer, interior designer, hunter, farmer), and there were no possessions. There was just a big inventory room that we stored EVERYTHING in. If you needed anything for your job, you just took what you needed. No more, no less. This worked out EXTREMELY well actually, because people were working toward the betterment of their community, not just themselves, so everyone helped everyone. The one exception to this rule was the one downfall: While no one owned the diamonds the miners found, we did have one rule about them, you could only use them if everyone in the server agreed with the cause. This was a great rule until a buddy of mine joined the server and before we remembered to mention the rule (it was never really an issue before, so it slipped our minds) he used our only 3 diamonds remaining to make a pick axe for himself. He was never much of a team player anyway. It was kind of a bummer, but it was a slight error in an otherwise extremely successful system. It was a great experiment for me as an anarchist to see unfold. I was very happy with the results.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

he used our only 3 diamonds remaining to make a pick axe for himself.

He shaved his hair to get you these beautiful cufflinks and you sold your straight jacket to afford him a beautiful comb...

[–]TheC0mm0nEnemy 2 points3 points ago

not really, he took the diamonds i worked kinda hard on for a tool he didnt REALLY need for a project none of us really knew about.

[–]CatalystParadox 0 points1 point ago

I would have solved this by demanding that the pickaxe be returned to the chest until it could be used in the creation of a community project.

[–]TheC0mm0nEnemy 0 points1 point ago

That's what we did, it still didnt help the fact that we were 3 diamonds short now.

It turns out his project was actually a good idea, i just wish he would have told us about it first... and used a regular iron pick axe like everyone else.

[–]CatalystParadox 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, just up and grabbing the only 3 diamonds in the communal stash is clearly a dick move, on any server.

[–]Socialist_Asshole 2 points3 points ago

For once, I actually have a perfect answer for a question; I play on an anarcho-communist server, which is really fun. Makes me enjoy finding diamonds even more.

[–]gotoAndSmoke 3 points4 points ago

I play tag the cop car. It's really fun.

[–]gotoAndSmoke -1 points0 points ago

Oh you guys are talking about video games? I'd rather be outside.

[–]jaki_cold 1 point2 points ago

GTA: San Andreas. Youse just a busta if you play skyrim.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

Which race is Busta?

[–]WrlBNHtpAW 1 point2 points ago*

Copyleft, or, at the very least, GPL games.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open-source_video_games

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the link!

[–]kingsage 1 point2 points ago

Zelda, Tetris, Supersmash Bros.

Also, kinda ironic, but I fucking love Age of Empires.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Nah, not Ironic.

[–]Resident Poet of Wonderous RenownSachyriel[S] 0 points1 point ago

Nah, not ironic but I did play it too! RTS games are the craziest.
