Stuff you should know, but don't (self.AskReddit)
submitted 12 months ago by drucey
What are basic skills and knowledge that everyone should know, but you don't?
[–]dayjawb 484 points485 points486 points 12 months ago
This is the area of my life that was actually revolutionized by YouTube. Don't know what the fuck the dipstick means when checking your oil? Check YouTube. Can't sew a button? Check YouTube. Looking for a new tie knot? Check YouTube.
[–][deleted] 208 points209 points210 points 12 months ago
I don't really know why you'd single out Youtube, but yeah, the internet really changed things in the department of "how do you '........'?"
It's a much more basic version of the part of the Matrix when Trinity learns to fly the helicopter.
"Do you know how to cook a chicken?"
"Hold on."
Googles
Sunglasses
"Let's cook".
[–]dayjawb 11 points12 points13 points 12 months ago
Very much lol'd
And I think because YouTube is so integral to video content, you can see information from much of the internet localized in one site. Sure it might be OC from Lifehacker, but it resides on YouTube which is why I search there first.
[–][deleted] 118 points119 points120 points 12 months ago
I figured out how to unclog a toilet using youtube. There's a shitload (heh) of rednecks (or, guys dressed in flannel with southern accents) with their own how-to "shows". It's kindof adorable.

Remembering people's names when I'm introduced to them. For some strange reason, when I meet someone I tell them my name and then just zone out when they tell me theirs.
And it's not that I don't want to, because I'll want to address them immediately afterwards and have no idea what to call them.
[–]earthpeesfire 470 points471 points472 points 12 months ago
Here's what you make a point to do every time you meet someone: right after they say their name, repeat it back to them while looking at them. "Nice to meet you, Jeff." "Do you live closeby, Amy?". Once you've done that, it will have a better chance of sticking in your brain and remembering someone's name reflects very positively on you. It's a skill everyone really should try to master.

[–]woofers02 212 points213 points214 points 12 months ago
I LIT'RALLY read that in his voice.
[–]chrrie 106 points107 points108 points 12 months ago
This is, literally, the best comment I've seen on Reddit today.
[–]IAmScience 86 points87 points88 points 12 months ago
Hell, I even find it functional to just directly repeat it in such a way that it's obvious I'm going to try to remember it. "Okay...Jeff...I sometimes struggle to remember names, Jeff, so I'm repeating yours a couple of times." Acknowledging that is very low-cost, socially speaking, as many people have this problem. Plus, the acknowledgment that it is a problem sometimes does some sort of magic insofar as when I do so, I have less of a problem recalling the name I'm trying to remember.
[–]frickindeal 283 points284 points285 points 12 months ago
I immediately pull out a Sharpie™ and write their name on their forehead, while pronouncing each letter. "J-E-F-F. Nice to meet you. Sweet."
It's a great icebreaker.
[–]glenomenon 67 points68 points69 points 12 months ago
Until he responds, "It's spelled J-E-P-H." Then you look like an asshole.
[–]DipsomaniacDawg 18 points19 points20 points 12 months ago
If Jeph spells his name that way he's probably an asshole anyways. At least we know his parents were.
[–]TehNoff 45 points46 points47 points 12 months ago
I've found that people don't even need the explanation. I just shake their hand or whatever and repeat with a smile. shake "Jeff", shake "Amy". And so on. I guess it seems like instead of just repeating the names it looks and sounds like I'm acknowledging them in a personal way.
[–]Madmusk 145 points146 points147 points 12 months ago
With girls I like to hang on to their hand for an awkwardly long amount of time while never breaking eye contact and repeatedly whispering their name. In my head I'm imagining them naked so there's very little chance that I'll forget them, or their name. Works for me, you might want to give it a try!
[–]stevo_knevo 128 points129 points130 points 12 months ago
I do something similar, but I imagine me wearing their skin instead. Works pretty well, I'll try your method though.
[–]pjpark 57 points58 points59 points 12 months ago*
I tried that once but the guy punched me in the face, asked me who the hell Jeff was, and told me not to call him Amy again. It worked though; I never forgot his name.
[–]EverGlow89 15 points16 points17 points 12 months ago
Call them by their race. Always works for me.
[–]commongiga 62 points63 points64 points 12 months ago*
Two things I've tried that kind of work. Do a kind of word association or rhyme in your head when you meet someone. Example:
Scott --> Great Scott
Theresa --> Mother Theresak
Adam --> Adam & Eve
You get the point. You can also try picturing their name written across their forehead in sharpee.
Edit: Obviously, Mother Theresak is Mother Theresa's lazy, freeloading sister. From Mars.
[–]sdempsey313 142 points143 points144 points 12 months ago
You can also ask to write their name across their forehead in sharpee
[–]bluebledthesea 682 points683 points684 points 12 months ago
I know very little about finances, the stock market, retirement funds, credit, bank accounts, loans, etc. and it scares the crap out of me that I don't. There should be a required class on managing money somewhere along the line.

[–]ProbablyHittingOnYou 194 points195 points196 points 12 months ago
Check this out. It's how I tell friends to practice using the stock market. Basically it gives you 100k in fake money and gives you some easy-to-use tools to practice investing.
[–]Kelvanir 90 points91 points92 points 12 months ago*
It's pretty cool, but I wouldn't let people who don't understand investing play with it. Investing in individual stocks without knowledge of the underlying companies/market/news is pretty close to gambling. Playing with this simulator can give you a false sense of thinking-you-know-what-the-hell-is-going-on.
Edit: I agree with everyone who says even knowledgeable investing is a bit of a gamble. I'm an index funds kind of guy because I like outperforming actively(professionally) managed funds.
[–]Creabhain 176 points177 points178 points 12 months ago
Playing the market IS gambling. Study after study have shown that randomally choosen stocks out perform the "experts" all the time. They have used throwing a dart, getting a monkey to pick the stocks, dice rolls, etc.
[–]Kelvanir 55 points56 points57 points 12 months ago
Yep, Index funds for me!
[–][deleted] 34 points35 points36 points 12 months ago
Do you have the sources? It's nit that I don't believe you, I just want to show them to my friends who believe the experts :)
[–]Blarvey 43 points44 points45 points 12 months ago
I agree that there should be a required class for financial literacy. Personal finance was mandatory at my high school but I have met a number of people who didn't have such a class and are very bad at managing their own money (lots of bank fees, high CC balances, no savings, etc.).
[–]WetHotAmerican 443 points444 points445 points 12 months ago
Small talk.
[–]soupiejr 359 points360 points361 points 12 months ago

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points52 points 12 months ago
True. See you later, like a Moss.
[–][deleted] 51 points52 points53 points 12 months ago
the object of small talk is to explore common ground between two people and transition into more interesting topics. It's an icebreaker. No, the other person doesn't find the weather any more interesting than you, but he/she accepts its discussion with hopes of building a deeper rapport.
Mutually accepting the fiction of really enjoying small talk allows people to put themselves at ease with one another long enough to think of some entertaining or insightful things to say.
Hi, I'm Ted. Was it raining when you left to come to the party, I've been here helping set up and haven't been outside for a few hours.
Yeah, it was raining at my house but then it dried up before i got here. Looks like it's going to be a nice night after all.
Is your house far away?
About 30 minutes, in Folgerville.
Oh yeah, my brother almost bought a house there. Do you like living there?
Yes, it's close to work and I have room for a garden.
I'd like to live closer to work, but I hate gardening. My mom always made me pull weeds as a kid.
Ha! I got over it. Where do you work?
... and on from here, getting to know each other and exploring more and more personal, thereby unique information.
A good way to pass the time and get to know people you may form a relationship with later.
[–]GrumpyAtheist 148 points149 points150 points 12 months ago
I'm with you on that one but I think my problem is that I just don't care what the other person has to say so I'm not inclined to ask questions. I also don't like to talk about myself and never tell personal anecdotes.
[–]WetHotAmerican 54 points55 points56 points 12 months ago
I'm with you about 98% of the time. There are a few occasions though where I wish I could make conversation a little more easily with people. If I have to have one more forced exchange about "the weather" I think I'll just about lose it.
[–]kittensofdoom 29 points30 points31 points 12 months ago
Why aren't you interested in what they have to say? Other people are fascinating to me; every person you meet has had a life and views totally different from yours. Maybe the person sitting beside you always wanted to go to clown college - you'll never know if you don't talk to them.
[–]cptskippy 61 points62 points63 points 12 months ago
It's a dying art. Smalltalk developers are few and far between. They're becoming a very hot commodity.
[–]sexrockandroll 327 points328 points329 points 12 months ago
How do to my hair (female). I can make it look okay but nowhere near as good as a 15 year old can do hers.
[–]st87 76 points77 points78 points 12 months ago
hahah and I thought I was the only one with this problem!
I wish I knew how they would tie a braid on the side of their fringe
I like that the picture you chose is of someone who can do their hair better than you can, while sporting a trollface.

I have curly hair and hate it when I was younger. I'd put it in a bun and call it a day. Now I love my curls and attempt to style it, but it's never as cute as I see other curly haired people do.
[–]piacocco 5 points6 points7 points 12 months ago
Have you visited naturallycurly.com?
[–]ldrn 12 points13 points14 points 12 months ago
yep, me too. I can do a pony tail and that is it. Always have to get friends to do my hair if I want any such "hairstyle".
[–]Tialah 9 points10 points11 points 12 months ago
There are tons of hair tutorials (and makeup for that matter) on youtube. Andrea's Choice is my fav.
Personally it takes me forever to straighten my hair so I just throw it back in a pony tail for work 90% of the time.

My keyboard. All those F buttons confuse me. All I know that F5 is refresh.
[–]Rundeer 100 points101 points102 points 12 months ago
F2 is for renaming things.
[–]knivesngunz 10 points11 points12 points 12 months ago
These tend to be default across programs:
F1 - Help
F2 - Rename
F3 - ??
F4 - (coupled with ALT or CTRL, manages tabbed windows in browsers or command prompt)
F5 - refresh (coupled with CTRL forces a cache dump / hard refresh)
F11 - toggle window size / full screen mode
That's all I can think of

Apple keyboards (wired ones) go up to F19.
[–]HolyMackerelBatman 41 points42 points43 points 12 months ago

F5 is NOT refresh in Lotus Notes. God I hate IBM.
[–]qwop88 81 points82 points83 points 12 months ago
People still use Lotus Notes? Shit, son.
[–]gargarissima 23 points24 points25 points 12 months ago
People in huge corporations that are not IBM still use Lotus Notes. Did you know you can write applications in Lotus Notes? My company's annual evaluation tool is a Lotus Notes app. Mind bending.
[–]h2omojo 9 points10 points11 points 12 months ago
One of the many reasons I hate Lotus Notes
[–]andrewsmith1986 79 points80 points81 points 12 months ago

I'm horrible at keeping in touch with people. For lots of my friends this isn't an issue and after years of not seeing each other it'll be like no time passed at all, but some people expect me to keep in touch and sometimes their feelings get hurt.
Edit: I've got lots of friends and plenty of them I don't have this issue with. A hundred years ago communication wasn't as ubiquitous as it is today and it was much harder for people to keep up correspondence. Now it's much easier and with that ease I think people expect a little more. At the same time Facebook and other sites enable us to keep up-to-date on our friends lives without ever actually having to communicate with them giving us the perception that we're somehow still involved with their lives.
My best friends usually don't need to hear from me to know that I'm still their friend though it's always good talking to them. Anyway, I guess I just prefer people who don't build resentment against me from not hearing from me for a long time. Still, I feel bad when friends (usually girls, admittedly) become exceedingly distant and then when I try to hang out with them after a year or so they act as if I've betrayed them by not keeping in touch.
[–]Teroc 49 points50 points51 points 12 months ago
Same here.
If people don't call me, then they don't care. Problem is, most of the time, they also wait for you to call them...
Sorry Dad, haven't talked to you in years now.
[–]neerg 15 points16 points17 points 12 months ago
If people don't call me, then they don't care.
Why does it mean they don't care?
[–]Teroc 15 points16 points17 points 12 months ago
Exactly, it doesn't. That's why I'm stupid and I don't call either.
I keep telling to myself that I need to call some friends that I haven't talked to in a while... But that's the thing, I just remind myself that I need to do it but I never do. I'm a lousy long distance friend.
I have a contradictory viewpoint on friendship. A friend, to me, is someone who doesn't require constant, or rather, semi constant, communication.
He is moving to Nevada? Oh, that's cool, I'll talk to him later. I know that we will still be friends whenever we see each other next, whether it be next summer, or in a decade.
[–]brunebinette 11 points12 points13 points 12 months ago
I used to think I was bad at this too... Then I realized that all relationships - including friendships - take work. You have to make an effort to be interested in your friends and be willing to occassionally just drop them a line to see how they are. It's really not too difficult but for some reason, I thought friendships just magically happened. ...Maybe friendsips are different with guys but as a girl, this is how mine go.

Home improvement things, especially plumbing and drywalling.
[–]tourabbeyroad 52 points53 points54 points 12 months ago
That's just a trip to the google and youtube. I'm currently in the middle of a semi-large kitchen project (tiling the floor, repainting walls, and painting cabinets) and all of the research was done online and with asking family for help. It also doesn't hurt to be excited about DIY. I went into this with everything and had to convince my fiancé that we could do it!
[–]vjarnot 19 points20 points21 points 12 months ago
Don't listen to the people telling you to "just google and read and you're golden"!
Plumbing's easy, hanging drywall is easy, tiling's easy, electrical's easy, hell - building a house isn't difficult.
Mudding drywall well, on the other hand, is a motherfuckin' black art.

I know a few people my age (26) who can't ride a bike or swim. I find this very odd.
[–]barrym187 66 points67 points68 points 12 months ago
My wife does triathlons all the time and she signed me up for a sprint (400m swim - 5k run - 20k bike) last year. I grew up swimming in a pool but never consistently or over any sort of distance. My preparation for the swim was to hop in the lake half an hour before the start of the race and swim out to a platform and back (about 50m). It was really windy that day so the water was very choppy and that 50m was now the longest distance I'd ever swam in one trip.
Here's how it went down: We were in the second heat of four separated by 5 minutes. The gun went off I got past the dock and began getting slammed in the face with water (Power Tip - Open bodies of water != pools) I'm not even 75m in and I hear the next heat go off and the final heat by the time I'm about 150m. I was passed out by some kids and had resorted to the doggy paddle at one point. There were at least two life guards eying me the whole time just waiting for me to go under. I think the only thing that got me back into the beach was the current produced by the last heat passing me. My time for the 400 m swim was around 33 minutes and just for some perspective, the kids were finishing in like 16 minutes and My wife finished around 20.
TLDNR: I learned during a triathlon that I can float but not really swim.

[–]KennyLog-in 194 points195 points196 points 12 months ago
My college required a swim test to graduate. The result... lots of people taking swim lessons as a class. They have since dropped that requirement, but I didn't think it was a bad idea.
[–]iamahorribletroll 284 points285 points286 points 12 months ago
This should be a requirement of elementary school.
[–]fwaggle 491 points492 points493 points 12 months ago
Or kindergarten.
My grandmother taught me how to swim by throwing me in a lake. Swimming is easy once you figure out how to get out of the potato sack while underwater.
[–]randomjew 150 points151 points152 points 12 months ago
My dad once tried to throw me into the pool when I was about 2 so I could learn to swim. Before he tossed me, I grabbed two handfuls of chest hair with me.
That was the first time I saw my old man cry and the last time he tried anything like that.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 12 months ago
I'm pretty sure it is in Australia, we certainly had it for our primary school.
[–]stevo_knevo 9 points10 points11 points 12 months ago
Yeah, cause of all the shit you have to survive in Australia, water is highest on the list.
[–]ThatBloke 24 points25 points26 points 12 months ago

[–]doctorwaffle 153 points154 points155 points 12 months ago
I saw a video on how to do the Ian Knot on Reddit and I've never gone back. I have wowed people with how quickly I can tie my shoes.
[–]jimcando 12 points13 points14 points 12 months ago
I switched to the Ian Knot a while back as well.
However, my friends don't seem very impressed :(
[–]shawnaroo 28 points29 points30 points 12 months ago
Next time you tie your laces, set them on fire first. If that doesn't wow them, never speak to your friends again.
[–]ThunderingNuisance 13 points14 points15 points 12 months ago
I opt for the Ian Secure Knot myself. It's still very quick and it NEVER comes untied unless you untie it yourself, which is done by pulling on the two ends, as usual.
[–]yuropod 72 points73 points74 points 12 months ago
I thought that was the regular way. 23 years....
[–]Spiro_Agnew 267 points268 points269 points 12 months ago

One of my close friends can't tell the time from an analogue clock. I've been friends with her for six years and I still have no idea why.
[–]CrazyA64 253 points254 points255 points 12 months ago
I can't see why either... You should totally not be friends anymore.
[–]SniperFists 51 points52 points53 points 12 months ago
I also can't tell time on an analogue clock unless I concentrate for a good 15-30 seconds (and even then I usually fuck it up). For me, it's a sign of dyscalculia, but this definitely isn't the case for everyone :)
[–]katie_cat_eyes 9 points10 points11 points 12 months ago
That's my problem, too. I love the look of analog clocks, but I have to sit there and count from twelve to figure out what time it is. It would just be easier to see the numbers.
I also cannot tell the difference between left and right. When I'm driving and see signs that say 'left lane closed ahead', I confuse myself and always wind up in the left lane. If someone's directing me where to go, I have to hold out my hand to visualize it. So bizarre.

Go on and kiss de girl
It's a reference to Sebastian from The Little Mermaid.
[–]KarmaKaiser 120 points121 points122 points 12 months ago
I have actually text-ed this to friends where I can see across the bar they could make a move and it would be fine.
The reactions are hilarious. Also, he kissed the girl. Everything turned out better than expected.

You deserve more karma than my upvotes.
[–]KarmaKaiser 139 points140 points141 points 12 months ago
This literally pops into my head every time I feel like it's time to go for the kiss.
Sha-la-la-la-la-la
Don’t be scared
You got the mood prepared
Go on and kiss the girl
Don’t stop now
Don’t try to hide it how
You wanna kiss the girl
Float along
Listen to the song
The song say kiss the girl
Music play
Do what the music say
[–]johnnygrant 37 points38 points39 points 12 months ago
It is usually in the eyes...always look directly at her when you sense possibilities...you will see it when they want it.

Yes kiss her in the eye

I don't know how to change the oil in my car.
[–]cm1745 14 points15 points16 points 12 months ago
It's not that it's very difficult, it's just a messy job and plus you have to dispose of the old oil properly. Most people would just rather have their mechanic do it then go through the hassle.

How to whistle.
And, no, it's not as easy as "just do this with your lips".
[–]Nesman64 98 points99 points100 points 12 months ago
I can whistle normally, but never learned to do the two-finger-in-mouth whistle, or whistle through my teeth.
[–]rusemean 148 points149 points150 points 12 months ago
If you close your lips around a pen or pencil and then remove and keep your lips in that formation, place your tongue so that its tip is is against your bottom front teeth, and then blow. While blowing, move your lower jaw up and down. As you scan up and down with your jaw you should get some raspy whistling. Isolate this point and work on making a clear, clean tone. Once you're able to whistle a single tone, you should be able to branch out in pitch with experimentation. Whistling a complex tune is a dance of tongue, lip, and jaw movement as well as control of air pressure. It can seem impossible at first when you can do nothing but produce a ragged single note, but over time you learn how to move your mouth and it just becomes natural.

Use the knuckle method.
[–][deleted] 274 points275 points276 points 12 months ago
Hold your hands out in front of you palms facing down. Count along your knuckles and the gap in between, left to right, with the months. A knuckle has 31 days, a gap has 30. February has 28, unless it's a leap year. Leap years are also Olympic games years, 2012, 2016 etc.

when to shut up
[–]TaraMcCloseoff 77 points78 points79 points 12 months ago
About a year and a half ago, I realize my yapping was a serious problem in that it annoyed my friends and got me in trouble. So, I stopped talking for 6 weeks. I consented to singing, laughing, and talking in Spanish, since I don't know enough Spanish to annoy anyone with it. You'd be amazed at the friends I made at that time. The reactions I had from a lot of people really opened my eyes as to how much people just want to hear themselves talk. Having the opportunity to sit and listen was refreshing. Plus, people would admit to feeling extremely comfortable with me, and connected on very deep levels, when I provided no verbal feedback whatsoever.
I still have the little book I wrote everything down in. Whenever I feel like speaking, I just remember those 6 weeks and how it was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had.
[–]BKMD44 29 points30 points31 points 12 months ago
It's really just a matter of being concise and thinking before you speak. Just try slowing yourself down a bit and carefully formulate what you want to say and stop talking when you're finished. I find people that are like this are trying to "talk out" their thoughts, which makes them ramble.

[–]marley88 115 points116 points117 points 12 months ago
The majority of American cars have automatic transmission so a large number never actually learn to drive a manual car.
[–][deleted] 239 points240 points241 points 12 months ago
Even more of a mindfuck: in America, getting your license in an automatic also qualifies you to drive a manual. What. The. Hell.
[–]wherearemyshoes 141 points142 points143 points 12 months ago
I don't get why people think this is such a big deal. I learned to drive in an automatic and took my drivers test in an automatic. My first car, however, was a manual. It took me two hours to learn to drive it without constantly stalling (practiced in an abandoned neighborhood), and about a week to get where I didn't stall at the occasional stop light.
TL;DR: Shifting is such a minor aspect of driving relative to the big picture; who cares if it's part of the initial driving test?
[–]Hicksapotamis 71 points72 points73 points 12 months ago
I tried to teach my wife to drive a manual transmission.......one light pole and 2k later I gave up that endeavor

I've tried multiple times, but it still has been about 8 years since my last attempt so maybe I should give it a go again. I'm always afraid I am going to be in a dire situation, but I won't be able to get the DeLorean up to 88mph because I keep stalling it.
[–]IAmScience 34 points35 points36 points 12 months ago
I say give it a go. Once you get the hang of it it's really fairly easy. Plus, there's a major difference between driving a car, and just steering one. You get a deeper connection with your mode of transportation.
Practice in an empty parking lot. If you can find one with a hill, that's even better. My Mom taught me (Dad would get too frustrated) in the parking lot of her office on a weekend. The lot had a hill that led to some underground parking. I got the hang of stopping and starting on a hill with minimal rollback. Also, it helps to spend a little bit of time figuring out where the catch-point is on the clutch before you move the car. When you get used to that, you develop muscle memory that will help you release the clutch and engage the accelerator appropriately. Good luck!

Pre-Edit: the deleted comment was about how to jumpstart a car.
I literally learnt this today. It's not too hard, just go red to red, black to black. Red is always positive, Black is always negative. DON'T LET THEM TOUCH. Turn on the working car first.
EDIT: I figured I'd update this because I keep getting corrected. Don't trust the colors, always look for the + and - sign. Also read Raging_cycle_path below me. Apparently the batteries emit hydrogen gas which doesn't play well with sparks. You can ground the recipient car negative clip on a piece of bare metal on the car as opposed to the negative clip on the dead battery. Thanks for reading and play safe.
[–]Raging_cycle_path 140 points141 points142 points 12 months ago
For more advanced users, the order of attaching is +ve recipient car, +ve donor car, -ve donor car, bare metal somewhere on recipient car. This minimises the risk of sparking up hydrogen fumes from the dead battery.

I want to be able to juggle. And ride a unicycle. More so a unicycle.
[–]moderateclimate 16 points17 points18 points 12 months ago*
Learning to unicycle just takes practice. I learned with a friends unicycle over a few days (full days mind you, I'm pretty determined). Start on a sidewalk or something with a slight downward slope and a wall to use to get onto the unicycle. From there just let go of the wall and pedal like mad.
A few tips:
Wear loose clothing if you're a guy. You need to pull your balls up and out of the way when you get on the unicycle or you'll crush them (I speak from experience, it was was why I quit on my first day trying)
Keep your head up and focus about 100m in front of you. Your head is heavy and if you look at your feet, you'll fall forwards.
Lean forwards and backwards based on how you want to move. If you want to go forwards, lean forwards a bit, then pull the unicycle back under you by pedaling forwards faster. The reverse for backwards.
Never stop pedaling. Like a bike, it's way harder to balance on a non-moving unicycle. Also like a bike, the hardest part is starting from a standstill. Use the rate of pedaling to balance yourself.
Put all of your weight on the seat, sit on it like a chair. You lose a lot of stability when you push off the seat with your legs. Make sure that you have good pressure on both of the pedals though, you will need to push both forwards and backwards on them.
Keep your hips straight when pedaling. When normally riding a bike, you rotate your hips a little back and forth to get more power in each stroke. On a unicycle, this will make you weave back and forth.
Good luck!
Edit: It's kinda funny how you said you mostly wanted to learn to unicycle and most of the comments are about juggling.

I've a degree in geography. It's not all labeling maps. In fact, we stopped doing that once I was no longer in geography of "region" classes.
While it can be useful when discussing things, I don't see it as being immensely important. I would much prefer someone be able to look at a region with the country in question and understand where they are and how the area as a whole is affected by the geography, not the location.
Also, Central Asia and all of Africa have always been terribly difficult for me too.

How to play poker.
[–]IAmScience 102 points103 points104 points 12 months ago
Poker 101:
Your goal is to make the best 5-card hand. These rank in the following order:
Players place bets based on the strength of their hand (or on the strength of the hand people perceive they have). Other players may match that bet (call), increase that bet (raise), or decline to continue playing (fold). If a player wishes to continue playing, and no bet has been placed yet, that player may check his turn to another player and keep his hand. If the other player bets, the checker must either call, or raise to continue playing.
Every form of poker is a variation on these rules. The ever-popular Texas Holdem gives each player two cards, while 5 are dealt face-up on the table to be used by everybody to make the best 5-card hand. Betting proceeds before any community cards are dealt, then again after the first 3 cards (the flop), the fourth card (the turn), and the fifth card (the river). Each player bets based on the strength of their hand. Sometimes they also bet based on how strong their hand is perceived to be. They may have nothing at all, but if they bet well, they can force players who are uncertain about their hands to fold, and win the pot. The pot goes to whoever is successful at getting other players to fold, or to whoever has the best hand when all the cards have been dealt.
There are loads of variations on the game of poker, but it's fairly easy to play. I learned how to play by playing a lot of Yahtzee when I was younger, which helped me remember the rank of the hands. It's a great game, even when money isn't involved. My friends and I used to play to determine where we'd go to lunch on a Saturday. Whoever was the last person with chips on the table got to select the destination.

How to start a fire without matches or a lighter. Basically, everyone should have some minor survival skills, and not Bear "Wilderness Parkour" Grylls survival.
[–][deleted] 81 points82 points83 points 12 months ago
As someone who does know how to make fire without matches or a lighter, I can tell you this: HAVE MATCHES OR A LIGHTER WITH YOU. The skills you need to make a fire are only useful if you are in a very thoroughly dry area. If you are ever lost and it's rained recently or is currently raining, you're completely fucked. A $2 BIC lighter is one of the more durable and reliable firestarters ever. Always have one.

I rock at algebra and geometry but percentages and statistics do my head in.
I can't calculate percentages without a calculator and I always forget if I should divide or multiply the amount with the percentage or what.
I think it's percentage/100 and then multiply that by the amount? Then subtract the answer from the original amount? Im not sure and I get confused.
I'm also extremely bad with finances, the idea of stock market and things like interest on loans and that kind of thing. Just does not compute :/
[–]TehNoff 13 points14 points15 points 12 months ago
I never understood what people were adding and subtracting when it came to the percentage things. To me "47%" was just ".47". It's not even math to me, I just change the symbols mentally. Like a translation. If someone wanted "47% of 987" then it was just ".47 times (of) 987".
Maybe that helped?

I don't understand insurance deductibles, and I don't know how to file my taxes by myself.
[–]CodyPhoto 12 points13 points14 points 12 months ago*
Insurance guy here.
A deductible is simply how much you are responsible in the event of a claim.
Car example: Hail damage to your car, you have comprehensive coverage (fire, theft, vandalism, etc) your deductible is $250. File a claim, get it in the shop, estimate comes out at $9,000. You pay $250 of that $9,000 and the insurance covers the rest.
Home example: Sewer backs up, you have coverage. Damages come to $50,000 and your deductible is $1,000. You pay out $1,000 and the repairs are done.
Deductibles are in place as a benefit for the insurance company. It minimizes a lot of claims (especially in the auto sector) where there's a lot of small/minor fender benders as well as homes where small losses occur and the deductible + claim surcharge encourages a client not to file a claim.
I usually advise $1,000 or higher deductibles for home insurance as I see it as being an insurance against major losses that you could not possibly financially recover from. I personally would never make 2-3 small claims on home insurance as you'll become a less desirable risk to insurance companies and could possibly be turned away.
EDIT: I'll also add that deductibles are 'beneficial' to the client in terms of reducing premium. The higher the deductible the lower the premium paid. Some things to note/consider though:
There's a threshold with my company, so having a $2,500 vs $5,000 makes no difference in premiums paid. Sometimes a company in a complete loss will waive the deductible (I've heard of fires having the deductibles waived. If you have an endorsement like SEF 20 (Alberta specific) and forego on the rental (saving the insurance company money) you can sometimes request your company to waive the deductible.
