The Beatles - Revolver.

[–]thescheibe 68 points69 points ago

Black Sands - Bonobo MUTEMATH - Mute Math

[–]SassyShorts[S] 27 points28 points ago

Black sands is a great album

[–]doubleknaverydoubleknavery 8 points9 points ago

Kiara is a great track off of said album. Upvotes all 'round

[–]zildjiabass150 4 points5 points ago

whenever I put on any one of their songs its, "okay, I guess I'm listening to bonobo for a week." and I don't regret it xD

[–]karagana 188 points189 points ago

Doolittle by Pixies is the one I currently listen to on repeat.

[–]AAA0 142 points143 points ago

By no means my favorite albums/artist of all time, but I've been listening to a lot of The Tallest Man on Earth recently. He's got a certain legitimacy in his songwriting and his sound that is missing from a lot of contemporary folk artists.

[–]AskforChase 26 points27 points ago

So much listening to him lately. The wild hunt gets played pretty much cover to cover on the regular. Also, where do my bluebirds fly is one of the best songs I've ever heard.

[–]BongasaurasRex 230 points231 points ago

Rubber Soul

[–]an0mn0mn0m 42 points43 points ago

Norwegian Wood over and over again

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points ago

And Revolver

[–]homr4ever 6 points7 points ago

How did I have to scroll down this long for a Beatles album to appear?

[–]BobSlydell08 78 points79 points ago

David Bowie - "Heroes"

Aesop Rock - Float

[–]Gwotch 9 points10 points ago

Upvote for Bowie

[–]screwdozer 117 points118 points ago

Veckatimest - Grizzly Bear

[–]giometrygiosegahekui 4 points5 points ago

I prefer Yellow House, it's a little more droney and raw, but I think it speaks a lot about their style.

[–]FTL 114 points115 points ago

The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

[–]MeatyTurtle 115 points116 points ago

Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister

[–]Nethid 234 points235 points ago

Pink Floyd - Animals If you have never heard it, and are willing to give at least 1 song off of it a chance, I suggest Dogs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlJWis5wH54

[–]Amanitas 51 points52 points ago

would have gone with Pigs (three different ones) but glad you mentioned the album. probably my favorite floyd as well.

[–]MikeOnFire 13 points14 points ago

Best concept album ever.

[–]hayterade 25 points26 points ago

no way, sheep is the best song on this album!

[–]pmac135 17 points18 points ago

sheep's lyrics are legendary

[–]SirLawkardDaysofOurLawls 70 points71 points ago

J Dilla - Donuts

[–]hooshtin 58 points59 points ago

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise

[–]schram11 230 points231 points ago

LONDON CALLING

[–]TastyClown 24 points25 points ago

From time to time, I'll just be walking down the street and this album blows my mind. Not listening to any music, not thinking about music, just WHAM! LONDON CALLING!

[–]CaaronnE 115 points116 points ago

Ratatat - LP3

[–]Fartoholic 63 points64 points ago

:DDDDD

I prefer Classics though.

[–]s3ank1m 83 points84 points ago

Jeff Buckley - Grace

[–]MrWhammy 175 points176 points ago

The Cure - Disintegration (1989 - Fiction Records)

[–]Mister_Scorpion 274 points275 points ago

Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. So many beautiful songs, and Reservations describes me so well.

[–]WaldosHERE 17 points18 points ago

Jesus don't cry....

[–]boywiththethorn 48 points49 points ago

I've been listening to this album almost everyday for the last year and a half and it still hasn't got old. I firmly believe that "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" is the best opening track of all time and "Radio Cure" is the most beautiful song ever written.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

I don't always get drunk by myself, but when I do I normally have Yankee Hotel Foxtrot playing. "You were so right when you said I've been drinking, what was I thinking when I said goodnight." There is so much awesomeness in that song, and most of it doesn't even really make sense.

[–]avengepluto 6 points7 points ago

For solo drinking, I prefer their preceding album, Summerteeth. Gloriously happy music with deeply depressing lyrics.

[–]bahhrito6 10 points11 points ago

I don't know about best opening track of all time. Its great, but I think if you go to Wilco's next album, "At Least That's What You Said" is a better opening song. That solo opens up the rest of the album quite nicely.

Either way, Wilco is great.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points ago

Heavy Metal Drummer gives me a summery feeling. So does the lyric "I am an American aquarium drinker" from "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" for some reason.

[–]They_took_it 281 points282 points ago

"Takk..." by Sigur Ros. Some of the most powerful and beautiful music I've heard.

[–]robotvoice 76 points77 points ago

Takk is excellent but you should check out their older stuff too. Ágætis Byrjun is fucking amazing, my favorite album by these guys.

[–]ttaavi 38 points39 points ago

Takk is the "poppiest". Perhaps easiest to approach, which is good. My personal favorite is ().

[–]DustbinK 3 points4 points ago

No, Med Seo is the poppiest. Takk... was just when it was getting poppy.

[–]lachs 40 points41 points ago

Right on, () is better though =)

[–]Faceless_Golem 77 points78 points ago

Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8fVX41-Njg

[–]RIPsonics 131 points132 points ago

Undun by the Roots... A hip hop classic in the making

[–]narcotic_frog 29 points30 points ago

brilliant album!, I am also really enjoying Commons 'the Dreamer, The Believer'

[–]Cuberonix 54 points55 points ago

Currently, every Explosions In The Sky album.

[–]koipen 292 points293 points ago

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

[–]JohnnyWasHere 97 points98 points ago

Soft Bulletin is also amazing.

[–]chadius333 8 points9 points ago

And let us not forget Clouds Taste Metallic.

[–]cky12qxz 205 points206 points ago

F#A# Infinity.

[–]IlloganMorning29 58 points59 points ago

That album is like a daydream, or a fever.

[–]dialtech 11 points12 points ago

Their very best.

[–]johnpisme 66 points67 points ago

Lift Yr. Skinny Fists is much better, imo. I even like Yanqui UXO better. Upvotes anyway!

[–]Actuw 20 points21 points ago

Antennas to Heaven!

[–]johnpisme 6 points7 points ago

Yes! The whole thing is great but now that I'm thinking about it I want to put it on and listen to that part with the weird preacher on the radio with the awesome, creepy violin backing. But I know if I do this I'll just want to listen to the whole album...

Fuck it. Doing it anyway.

[–]Nordiis 59 points60 points ago

They don't sleep anymore on the beach

:(

[–]solar_realms_elite 24 points25 points ago

That is the single most depressing few seconds in all of music.

(In my opinion, judging from what I've heard; obviously.)

[–]Fartoholic 361 points362 points ago

Demon Days by Gorillaz I think. Difficult to decide.

[–]alltheposts77 39 points40 points ago

Upvote for this album. The reason why Gorillaz is one of my favorite bands.

[–]StanderdUsername 28 points29 points ago

As of this morning, my favorite album is Plastic Beach.

[–]thefreund 5 points6 points ago

Lately I haven't been able to stop listening to Odelay, I feel like Beck is an extremely under appreciated musical genius

[–]xfloormattx 45 points46 points ago

I am always playing Odelay, Mutations and Sea Change

[–]metrew 74 points75 points ago

Real Estate - Days

[–]aquanautic 155 points156 points ago

Fugazi's 13 Songs, Alkaline Trio's Goddamnit

I'm in a phase.

[–]fatkidswinatseesaw 55 points56 points ago

Fugazi is not a phase! Amazing album.

[–]behm28 15 points16 points ago

I went through a Goddamnit phase too man.

To this day I can't listen to "Sorry about that" without choking up.

[–]hax0rdscottwillson 43 points44 points ago

Love - Forever Changes

fantastic album by overlooked band from late 60s LA

[–]koolaidface 36 points37 points ago

Beck - Sea Change. I always come back to this album, especially when I am depressed. It soothes me like no other.

[–]AutoBear 12 points13 points ago

Kid A - Radiohead , spent a lot of time listening to it whilst playing "limbo".

[–]gomm 13 points14 points ago

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

A much lauded album that lives up to its hype.

[–]getoffmyelevator 29 points30 points ago

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

[–]ttmp22 391 points392 points ago

Funeral by Arcade Fire.
Quite possibly the greatest opening and closing to an album I have ever heard.

[–]recoverelapse 24 points25 points ago

It took me forever to notice this brilliant album. I bought it when it first came out because of the album packaging. But I didn't care much for the music. Then one day after a year of me owning it and not playing it. It randomly got synced into my ipod and it played from start to finish while I was running and it freaking blew my mind. One of my favorite albums now.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

In the backseat is perhaps one of the most haunting songs i've ever heard, in a good way

[–]lordgilgamesh 46 points47 points ago

Fang Island is awesome!!

right now probably:

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

[–]cutcopy 5 points6 points ago

JEG ER BLODTØRST!

[–]doxy_ 69 points70 points ago

I haven't been able to stop listening to The National's High Violet for about six months. El Camino has also been getting a good spin these past few weeks!

[–]homeworkisnotmything 8 points9 points ago

High Violet is pure genius! Been listening to it almost non-stop since I first discovered it.

[–]miked4o7 38 points39 points ago

Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs

Definitely worth checking out for anyone that hasn't heard it.

[–]instasquid 56 points57 points ago

The Cat Empire, By the Cat Empire

It revitalised ska in Australia, turning it into great party music with some jazz undertones.

[–]nicolosilva 98 points99 points ago*

Is This It - The Strokes and Silent Alarm - Bloc Party.

[–]valoopy 27 points28 points ago

Just picked up Silent Alarm the other day. INCREDIBLE.

[–]JordanRodkey 251 points252 points ago

Daft Punk's Discovery

[–]Brownie556 25 points26 points ago

Hells yeah! Got this on Vinyl for Christmas. Such a lovely album.

[–]Hobzmarley 269 points270 points ago

The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium, one of the best flow through albums ive ever heard,

[–]DoctorCollege 47 points48 points ago

I agree. Definitely a good flow there. Although my favorite is Frances the Mute.

[–]Mixdroid 48 points49 points ago

Zeppelin IV!

[–]PalliMoon 40 points41 points ago

The Who - Who's Next, I've heard it a million times and I will never get tired of it

[–]svcvj 48 points49 points ago

Innerspeaker by Tame Impala

[–]Casiotime 6 points7 points ago

Great band, the singer sounds strangely like John Lennon in some of their songs!

[–]MuffnCabbage 70 points71 points ago

We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls

Seriously, I love these guys so much. One of the songs off the album I've been listening to a lot recently. The whole dang album is great.

[–]sneckosnecko 37 points38 points ago

Frankenchrist - Dead Kennedys

[–]LastBaron 103 points104 points ago*

Sorry for the cliche, but I just purchased "The Wall" by Pink Floyd for the first time and I've really been digging that.

I'm also currently into "Crack the Skye" by Mastodon and "Holographic Universe" by Scar Symmetry.

When I'm playing Starcraft 2 I enjoy "Antares" by Sybreed and "Love and Other Disasters" by Sonic Syndicate, they're both hard and fast paced.

Edit for spelling of "Ponk Floyd"

[–]aMUSEing 37 points38 points ago

The Alligator - The National

I find myself constantly coming back to it, it's just brilliant.

[–]bluetemplar 36 points37 points ago

Era Vulgaris - Queens of the Stone age. I'm too excited for their new album this month.

[–]Benum 19 points20 points ago

TIL I have something to be excited for this month.

[–]kliman 4 points5 points ago

I've been listening to the original self-titled album since they came through Calgary touring on it last year. Is the new album this month? All the sources I've seen just say "Early 2012".

[–]robertjohnmilner 142 points143 points ago*

The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest

Plans - Death Cab For Cutie

[–]borpoQueEsAmor 46 points47 points ago

Have you seen the Tribe documentary? It had me revisiting all their stuff.

[–]theorys 13 points14 points ago

One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. A must watch for all Tribe fans.

Dethalbum from Dethklok

[–]rollyolly 175 points176 points ago

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless. Never gets old.

[–]crackatinnietribe 9 points10 points ago

IMO most innovative guitar album of the 1990's. Kevin Shields deserves so much more recognition for his immense talents here.

[–]Y0urShadow 40 points41 points ago

The Color and The Shape -Foo Fighters

[–]SpringVark 12 points13 points ago

This is my 2nd favourite album ever. And certainly the Foo's best. Interesting fact: the album is actually called The Colour And The Shape - colour being spelt the UK English way, in recognition of it's producer, Gil Norton, who is English.

[–]fa9 72 points73 points ago

NOFX - The Decline

[–]Eispeis 35 points36 points ago

Clutch - Blast Tyrant

[–]Joebalo 18 points19 points ago

Wonderful album, but I preferred Moving Pictures.

[–]bigdaddywhiteboy 57 points58 points ago

Lateralus has been going through my head for the past few days.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

That Real Estate album that came out this year is really good. Been Listening to Coltrane's A Love Supreme and it took me like 15 listens to begin to feel the patterns and strange genius of the thing.

[–]dialtech 9 points10 points ago

Glassworks by Philip Glass.

[–]Tainster 9 points10 points ago

Right now I am really into Amnesiac and Kid A by Radiohead all over again.

Nine Inch Nails - "The Fragile"

[–]redtheda 61 points62 points ago

Someone asked me the other day what was the best rock concert I'd ever been to. I had to say NIN's tour for this album, with A Perfect Circle opening. It was a god damn religious experience (no pun intended) and I've been going to concerts for over two decades.

[–]plopous 7 points8 points ago

this tour stuck out for me as well as one of my favorites. NIN is hands down my fav group of all time, however, the one thing from that show that sticks out the most is the image of maynard standing for the ENTIRE perfect circle set in jeans and no shirt with his BACK to the crowd. and it was still awesome

[–]eatpoopsleep 22 points23 points ago

Flying Lotus - Los Angeles

[–]homeworkisnotmything 63 points64 points ago*

I love this thread! I have missed out on many of these albums, so thanks! You all seem to have great taste in music, so I find myself upvoting almost every comment. You have mentioned almost all of my favourites (e.g. "Nevermind", "OK Computer", "High Violet", "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", "Lateralus", "Loveless", "Good News For People Who Love Bad News", "The Suburbs"), although this list needs:

  • Jimmy Eat World - Clarity Example A fantastic album that I find perfect for almost any occasion. I honestly can't find a better replacement for this one, so it just sticks with me.

  • Alice in Chains - Dirt Example Every AiC album is just outstanding, but if I had to pick one, it'll always be Dirt. It might just be because I've listened to Dirt a lot more than the others, but I'll try to be more down-to-earth in the future.

  • Failure - Fantastic Planet Example A highly underrated album and, in my opinion, one of the best of the 90's.

  • Deftones - White Pony Example Really just another amazing album by Deftones.

  • Bombay Bicycle Club - A Different Kind of Fix Example An album I didn't like too much at first, to be honest. It's atmosphere really grew on me though. It really deserves a spot here now.

  • Megadeth - Rust in Peace Example Might just be the best thrash metal album of all time.

  • Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Example There is not really a lot to compare this album to. Few albums have had such an influence on the alternative rock genre.

  • Slowdive - Souvlaki Example Souvlaki has some of my favourite songs of all time. It's such a shame it's so underrated and looked past.

  • Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet Example Just a great concept album. While older progressive rock can sometimes feel just a bit... dated to me (excuse my ignorance), this album feels to me like a more modern approach from a classic prog-rock band.

  • Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lane Example This is a masterpiece plain and simple. Another thematic prog-rock album. It is very hard to experience in it's full glory without listening to it from start to finish.

[–]LadyAuPair 6 points7 points ago

Porcupine Tree=pure wonderfulness

[–]CorduroyTimePiece 83 points84 points ago

hail to the thief-Radiohead

[–]bthorne3 21 points22 points ago

I really love that album but right now I'm really loving In Rainbows. It's my all time favorite album.

[–]iMakeChickenNoises 33 points34 points ago

Why are there mountains - Cymbals eat guitars

Funeral - Arcade Fire

The Suburbs - Arcade Fire

Chutes too narrow - The Shins

And i'm still loving everything the Pixies and Pearl Jam made. New PJ album this year! woo!

[–]negat1vO- 401 points402 points ago

The Black Keys - El Camino

[–]dbennettreddit 130 points131 points ago

Great album. Little Black Submarine is where its at in my opinion. Its worth the ~2:00mins for the guitar and drums to drop.

[–]griffon28 40 points41 points ago

Hooray! My favourite 2011 album. Everyone needs to see this music video!

[–]CrimsonSpyPandora name 17 points18 points ago

The amount of editing that must've taken... I feel bad for the production crew.

[–]night_owl 18 points19 points ago

I saw an interview with Patrick Carney (drummer) and he said that they originally planned on this guy being only one small element of many different cool elements in the video, but the other 'elements' didn't turn out as awesome as they hoped and this 'element' turned out much more awesome than they anticipated.

These guys always great videos that really show how they are all about the music, but they don't take themselves too seriously either.

my two favorite examples: Howlin' For You and 10 a.m. Automatic

[–]IDoLoveHer 8 points9 points ago

Re-listening to Led Zep's "Physical Graffiti" and Jane's Addiction's "Nothings Shocking" album, loving each second of them.

Me and my friend just got finished talking about our childhoods and how we are still kids, and shit about growing up and how we won't see most of the people we know now once we leave highschool. I don't want to sound like a sissy, but we really got into deep with what we were saying, and we were bringing up shit that we will always associate with our childhood, stuff like our old playstations, watching DBZ, or at times we would go walking at like 2 in the morning because we had nothing better to do. Then we began talking about the sunken heart feeling we will get in the future because we will realize that we won't be aver to relive that again. We eventually brought up music, and after talking about them I remember listening to those two albums the most in particular, I just had to load them up again. Currently listening to the song Ten Years Gone, I've got man tears ;_;.

[–]TheOtherNick 14 points15 points ago

we will realize that we won't be aver to relive that again

No, but you'll meet new people in new places and have even more incredible experiences. And the people you want to hold onto, you'll probably hold onto; and even when you don't see them for a few years, you'll still be able to pick up like you only just put the phone down yesterday. Chin up champ.
