Maybe learning how to drive? I learned in a cemetery.

I've a hunch that it wasn't a cemetery until after you finished your first lesson.

OMG you're right! It was Belle Aire Montessory School! You must have seen the bit on the news. That was a while ago, though so you must have great memory(I just got out).

Stories like this make me want to get a helmet cam.

Like today I was passed by a jackass going into the parking lane. When he stopped at the light he was a whooping 10 feet ahead of me. I had half a mind to catch up to him but it wasn't worth it as he wasn't going my way.

One of my bike mechanic friends recently got a helmet cam. He records his rides to work and home and he'll put one on facebook every once in a while. It's mostly just him cursing at traffic, but I'm glad to know that if anything ever happens to him there will be some kind of video evidence.

Where can one get a helmet cam on the cheap? I looked on google and they cost $100 and up?

You can get one for $50 or less at a local bike shop, or between $20 and $30 at walmart or your local sporting goods store.

Edit: Misread on the phone and omitted the word "cam". I don't know shit about helmet cams. Sorry.

That's terrifying. I'm not worried about the every day drivers on the road, most of them are fine, it's these cases that frighten me, because there is no amount of preparation you can take to avoid drivers like this.

Whether they are fiddling with their radio, crying about their marital issues, talking on the phone, drunk, or very tired it's dangerous. I always try to remember that I am a rider when I am driver, and behave accordingly, but there are some people that are just too emotionally shocked or self absorbed to care (or be able to care).

If there were no, or few, other cars around, she may have "thought" it was a one-way road...

A friend of mine was almost killed this way. Lady in a minivan had a diabetic event and drifted over into him head-on, on a narrow bridge. He was in the hospital for months and has pounds of rods and plates in him.

What time of day was this?

[–]aaronbyard[S] 1 point2 points ago

It was around 3:45pm on a clearly visible, sunny day. None of the other vehicles that passed me in either direction had trouble seeing me. Lots of the vehicles passing me in the other direction waved as they passed.

Probably just a bad driver then. How long was she careening in your lane? Was she trying to hit you?

Ha. I think if she was trying to hit him I wouldn't be typing this to you.

I dunno, about 50 yards before we passed each other, I guess. I don't think she was trying to hit me, unless she was trying to hit me without hitting the guardrail.

Glad to hear you made it out safely. That's the main point. I could go on about how I hope she runs into a tree or something evil but ya know...ok never mind. I hope she does run into a tree. And then one of the squirrels from that tree comes down and bites her in so she has to get rabies shots...MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....

Close call. I'd recommend a bell. I use mine daily. Just as a heads up to a lot of people. There's a lot of crappy ones. But if you look, you can find good cheap ones (under $15).

I was talking to the guys at work today and joking around about mounting an air horn next to my headlight.

Like one of these? Those are loud as hell! Downsides are that you lose your waterbottle cage, and you have to pump it.

I know it's not "cool" but a small brass bell can make a lot of noise. And people hear a bell and know it's a bike.

[–]aaronbyard[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yah, something like that. That pumping is more hassle than it's worth.

I thought bicycle bells were supposed to be shiny like silver?

No way. Brass ones are where it's at. Simple and loud.
