I run a demonstration garden in my city, the goal of which is to increase the number of local gardeners. Over the last few years I have had dozens of plants stolen from my garden, some of them were dug up from the ground. At first my initial reaction is to get mad, but eventually I can't help but be happy that someone out there is growing my plants. It may seem weird, but if more people are gardening, I feel as if I won, even if they are gardening on my dime. I'm sure it wont make you feel better to hear my opinions on people thieving from me, but at least you know your not alone in getting your plants stolen from you.

This Spring, when I moved into my current apartment, I spent a solid month clearing what I later found out was five years of wild growth to put in two beds. I did it by working hard- when I started, the only gardening tool I had access to was my machete. By the end, I'd met all of my neighbors (many of whom also garden), and had been lent all the tools I needed to finish and get planting. I took care of this garden like it was a child- I even got Preying Mantises to deal with a neighborhood pest problem. I'm a 22 year old male, and I mainly keep to myself. I try to be considerate of those around me. I don't blast loud music when anyone else is around or at late hours. During the summer I was having a rough time, and most of the company I kept was plants. Somebody went into my backyard while I was sleeping on three separate occasions- the first, stealing an Aloe Vera from a planter, and the second and third digging up and absconding with the blueberry bushes I had planted and started doing grafting research on. I live two blocks from a university, with a police station nearby in a pretty safe suburb of a city in the northeast US. I just seem to have terrible luck- this is not even the first time that plants have been stolen from me. Feels terrible to have something that you care about on such a personal level taken from you, or at least it did to me, so while I understand your reaction, I cannot imagine that when someone steals plants (not just produce, which I don't really mind. I more often than not grow much more than I can eat anyways, and one can only have so much tomato or pepper sauce) I'd ever feel that way.

Exactly. I felt a little silly when I cried last night (I blamed hormones at the time).. I had just said that morning that I was super excited to see my crocus bulbs bloom, as they were my first try at bulbs. I don't think my boyfriend completely got it.

I was going to post something similar but you said it better than I ever could!

I feel your pain. I once moved to a neighborhood where, unbeknownst to me, anything not bolted down typically disappears or gets vandalized in some way. If this becomes a recurring problem, motion-activated security lights are a solid idea and if you want to go the extra mile, motion-activated game cameras can help catch whatever hominid or other mammalian animals you wish to incriminate.

I have cameras, and video footage of people stealing my plants, but it's a bit of a humbling experience to go to the police and say "Someone stole my plant!"

I always file reports, then go the public shaming route by putting the footage on youtube and posting photo stills on the neighborhood utility poles.

I'd definitely be the person to post flyers with the video still. It'd just have a big caption that says "YOU ARE AN ASSHOLE". Then I'd check to see what area the flyers are getting torn down in to narrow down the location of the evil-doer. I don't know what I'd do after that. Probably just still be angry.

That is a rather brilliant idea.

My parents had about 10 well established, large hostas in their front yard. Had been there for years. They moved out of that house, but would end up keeping it and leasing it out for a year or two. During one of the periods that the house was not occupied, someone dug up and stole about half the hostas.

I mean, I just assume that people who would recognize that they were large healthy plants, and care about that, are not the kind people low enough on the socioeconomic scale to need to steal shit straight out of someone's yard. Every time I think back on it I imagine some middle-class+ retiree doing it and sneaking it back to their well maintained and landscaped backyard garden. Blows my mind.

Exactly! Maybe that's classist or something, but it's the same logic that runs through my mind when I hear stuff like this. I've had people "steal" produce that I grow in the front yard, which is fine because I give so much of it away anyway. The only actual plants I've had stolen are some really coveted Indian spices that have taken hold in a couple places in my garden, particularly curry leaves.

I had a plant stolen a while back too. It was a Miracle berry, and I was pissed for the entire day. I put up a reward sign at the site of the theft and someone came by later on, totally embarrassed, thinking it was an abandoned plant from the previous homeowners.

If our porch wasn't on the second story I'd consider it.. My only neighbor is already on the lookout.

I'm glad your experience had a happy ending.

This is horrible, especially since I am a enthusiastic container gardener - Example Picture here -I know how much those specialized planters can cost. I am sorry that you have to experience people who actually believe that what's yours is theirs. I have yet to lose a planter (LOTS of them around the exterior of my house!), but last summer someone did come and pick all of the tomatoes that I had growing in my raised beds in both the front and the back yard. I like to tell myself they were really hungry, because the alternative is putting up fences and locks for what is currently a pretty display for the neighborhood that shows what a little nurturing of nature can do.

Edit: Added picture

I'm jealous! Your porch is beautiful.

[–]phanasonicSouth Texas. Zone 8b. 0 points1 point ago

Bleh! That sucks... Sorry they had to take the ones that actually meant something to you. I've got a few outside my door that I expect will be jacked soon (but they're just cheap terracotta with sago palms...heh).

[–]DrumlinUS-5B, Northern IL 0 points1 point ago

Sorry to hear about that. If you can figure out who did it, might I suggest enlisting 4chan for their help? Haha.

I lived in Chicago for a while, and while I never lost one to theft, I did lose a couple of plastic ones to fireworks one 4th of July. Some asshole punks were shooting bottle rockets down the alley, and a few ended up exploding on my 3rd floor back porch.

[–]infsmwetrustzone 7 ish 0 points1 point ago

I'm so sorry to hear that! So hard for non-gardeners to understand what those little ceramic pots mean to us.

This is one of the reasons I'm leery of keeping my houseplants outside in the summer, although I know it's better for the plants. I only keep heavy, clunky planters on the front yard.

[–]Themehmeh 0 points1 point ago

when I lived in an apartment one of my planters full of pretty petunias was stolen from me. I got it back a month or so later and all the plants were completely dead. It was a little creepy.

[–]DolceSpeziaUS Zone 5a, IL 60008 1 point2 points ago

What the fuck. That's...wow. Seriously.

[–]hopelessfail 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry for your loss! People are fucking jerks. When I had a small place at college I had some potted tomatoes on my front stoop that some dickface kids stole on moving-out-day. >:[

[–]lambseathams 0 points1 point ago

I have always found it supremely bizarre that people steal greenery and plantstuffs. Sorry for your loss!
