Seriously tough question. For me, it's probably Electric Relaxation by A Tribe Called Quest.

[–]iambutternumber 5 points6 points ago

Good choice. This thread will keep me busy for a while

[–]arb287 34 points35 points ago

[–]son_of_Bill_W 7 points8 points ago

I played it for Hip over the phone, he's like "oh, yo that shit is crazy Jay might want it for this compilation album he doin, called The Dynasty." And at that time, like the drums really weren't soundin' right to me so I went and um, I was listening to Dre Chronic 2001 at that time and really I just, like picked the drums off Xxplosive and put it like with it sped up, sampled, and now it's kind of like my whole style when it started, when he rapped on 'This Can't be Life.' And that was like, really the first beat of that kind that was on the Dynasty album I could say that was the, the resurgence of this whole sound

  • Kanye West, Last call

[–]Kuhrohnik 1 point2 points ago

you must mean "the best song of all time" by Dr. Dre

[–]lovevolcano 29 points30 points ago

Simon Says by Pharoahe Monch

[–]tytyshortfry 0 points1 point ago

suuch a bad ass beat, just gives me a mean look on my face

[–]b9red 0 points1 point ago

Everytime I hear this I imagine the Joker walking swinging a cane. So it has always been the bad guy tune since I was a kid. I swear this was in a movie.

[–]JManginaUSE THE SEARCH BAR! 0 points1 point ago

The remixed track is my phone's alarm, for those early mornings.

[–]thecolorifix 0 points1 point ago

I always thought Agent Orange and The Light were better.

[–]mpcz 30 points31 points ago

Without a doubt. Fall in love - Slum Village

[–]dconrad 7 points8 points ago

Check out Flying Lotus's take on Fall in Love if you're a fan of the man.

[–]Sloshmaster 3 points4 points ago

Have you heard the orchestral cover that Miguel Atwood Ferguson & Carlos Niño made to support Ma Dukes?

[–]kashifr 2 points3 points ago*

If you forward about 5 minutes in, Kanye and Mos def actually freestyle over this.

Blue Note Freestyle

It's great.

[–]DeaArthur 1 point2 points ago

One of my favorite Dilla beats. But even crazier is when the sample didn't get cleared and he made the remix. And then you learn that he used an Alice Cooper sample for it. Mind blown.

[–]phractured 0 points1 point ago

It's haunting

[–]mongojazZ 27 points28 points ago*

I have a couple, but one of them is "Rhythm" by AWOL One.

"Respect" by Biggie is another, as well as "Alright Hear This" by the Beastie Boys (no good link was found).

"Hiphop" by Dead Prez is always a pleasure to listen to.

"Definition" is an obvious choice.

All in all, I can't possibly decide ...I could go on and list at least 30 other songs, not able to decide on my absolute favourite.

[–]zlavan 11 points12 points ago

Hip Hop by Dead Prez is an all time great. It sounds like the origin of dubstep ha

[–]mongojazZ 2 points3 points ago

Having a subwoofer is definitely a nice addition to that track.

[–]ROBOT-DINOSAUR-NINJA 1 point2 points ago

Woah, that AWOL One beat is sick.. So rare to hear authentic "lounge" mixed into hip hop beats... You may like some old lounge music like Martin Denny etc... of course it doesn't have lyrics and phat beats.

[–]mindtehgap 26 points27 points ago*

Dilated Peoples - Worst Comes to Worst

I could listen to that loop all day.

[–]regtdesauf 1 point2 points ago

damn! Got caught it the loop! Bam!

[–]saigon79 25 points26 points ago

[–]hopscotchking 1 point2 points ago

Nice vid. Hadnt seen that before.

[–]guenchy 23 points24 points ago

Camp Lo - Luchini

[–]Slide_Show_Bob 21 points22 points ago

[–]thejornski 0 points1 point ago

I concur

[–]hopscotchking 0 points1 point ago

You in da office, baby.

[–]THE_PROMISE 70 points71 points ago

No contest: '93 Til Infinity.

[–]BeatFiend 5 points6 points ago

[–]BrendejoChingon 6 points7 points ago

That was pretty damn good. Not easily done proper justice when people step to that beat. Wax's take on it is pretty damn good too.

[–]panky117 5 points6 points ago

Freddie Gibbs has an awesome take on this as well

[–]mongojazZ 2 points3 points ago

That's one of my favourite beats as well. So fucking laid back.

[–]DustyCheetos 0 points1 point ago

Just saw these guys live on Sunday night. Easily one of the best hiphop shows I've ever been to.

[–]Dudefromevanston 0 points1 point ago

I'm currently attempting to book Opio at my school...hope it works out!

[–]schlefty 39 points40 points ago

[–]billydanze 0 points1 point ago

one of the best

[–]doverawlings 0 points1 point ago

I like Dead Presidents II beat better, which sampled this.

[–]mastermrt 16 points17 points ago*

Eric B & Rakim - Don't Sweat the Technique is still as sick as it ever was!

[–]panky117 1 point2 points ago

too ill, do you happen to know what songs are sampled here?

[–]beeeefcake 17 points18 points ago

Jurassic 5 - If You Only Knew

Also Deltron 3030 - 3030, kinda unorthodox but incredible.

[–]gh057 17 points18 points ago

[–]ChuckYoCouch 1 point2 points ago

Thank you. This should be the top post.

[–]Localbloke 15 points16 points ago

OC - Time's up

Fond memories of this song: Kanye West - Through the Wire

[–]Yuck_Fou_Bouche_Dag 8 points9 points ago

Pretty much the entire College Dropout album.

[–]ProfessorGoldfront 3 points4 points ago

"Time's Up" is a definite. I had the maxi-single with the instrumental. It felt like my own little secret beat until it wound up on an 8 Mile freestyle battle. Meh, still dope...

[–]COSIC 0 points1 point ago

didn't danny! use the same sample, just a little sped up, in his song where is danny?

[–]Timmmmeh 3 points4 points ago

upvote for feather, my personal favorite

[–]resoner 18 points19 points ago

[–]jayrot 2 points3 points ago

Be sure to check the remix too (ft. Mos Def, Kanye, Jay-z, & Busta)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItWuyCGyxS0

"If music get's you choked up this is the tree and a rope" -- One of Kanye's better lines.

[–]aaipod 14 points15 points ago

Can't pick one...

Jay-Z - Can I Live Love the build up

Fugees - Ready Or Not can listen to this beat for ever

Kanye - Spaceship One of Kanyes many masterpieces

i can go on for a while....

[–]TronCorleone 15 points16 points ago

Shook Ones Pt. II by Mobb Deep

[–]The-Real-DJS 3 points4 points ago

Cant hear this and not want to pull some shit.

[–]thecolorifix 1 point2 points ago

This is what I came to post.

The most menacing sounding beat I've ever heard.

[–]WittyIdea 35 points36 points ago

[–]harriswill 10 points11 points ago

[–]ObieOne 0 points1 point ago

Yes!

[–]Cloud_Tiger 12 points13 points ago

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Searching. Imo Pete Rock is the best hip hop producer, better than Dilla, Premo, and Dre.

[–]inward_penis 10 points11 points ago

SpottieOttieDopaliscious - Outkast

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXmqauitBkM

[–]livenfunky 9 points10 points ago

It's gotta be Big Boi - General Patton. Dude fuckin sampled Giuseppe Verdi.

[–]priestofdisorder 8 points9 points ago

Ice Cube - Today Was a Good Day

Why hasn't nobody mentioned this yet?

[–]honusnuggieVader Hater 16 points17 points ago

[–]DJTashman 2 points3 points ago

glad someone put ghostwriter in there

[–]KerryKittles 6 points7 points ago

Everyone's been posting classic stuff, but Xxplosive, React, Dipset Anthem, and You Know What are just some of the beats that I grew up loving

[–]DrFredBurroughs 9 points10 points ago

I'm a Player - Too $hort That fuckin Bass line

[–]stillercity 7 points8 points ago

I've always loved Be by Common. The bass in that song (I mean the actual bass instrument) sets the tone for the album. Kanye West is a genius

[–]glowghost 25 points26 points ago*

Camron and Kanye West- Down and Out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjVGft5wqSc
EDIT: Wild Wild Horses by Atmosphere also has a special place in my heart

[–]278225mw 10 points11 points ago

Can't for get the Just Blaze beat for Cam "Oh Boy," that shits awesome

[–]glowghost 6 points7 points ago

Cam got the best beats. Even now, he's not what he used to be, but he gets Araabmuzik beats.

[–]The_MadStorkPretty Bitch 5 points6 points ago

The East Flatbush Project - Tried by 12

[–]regtdesauf 4 points5 points ago

Gangstarr - Full Clip Rakim - It's been a long time

they're steadily competing for the best beat

[–]its_weisband 5 points6 points ago

Many come to mind, but off the top of my head:

MF Doom - Deep Fried Frienz

Atmosphere - Shoulda Known

Jay-Z - Ignorant Shit

[–]fialcon 4 points5 points ago

I have too many to name and most have already been posted. So here's one that hasn't:

Ghostface Killah, Nate Dogg & Mark Ronson - Ooh Wee

[–]dgc3 3 points4 points ago

DJ Premier on The Moment of Truth

[–]vanskrilla 3 points4 points ago

[–]bonafide10 4 points5 points ago*

Naughty by Nature- Uptown Anthem

its not very complex but I can't help by move to it

edit: spelling

[–]splitwheel 8 points9 points ago

Obie Trice - The Setup (prod. Dr. Dre)

Mothafuckin' muted xylophones up in this bitch!

[–]thestogs 3 points4 points ago

[–]Biophaze6 2 points3 points ago

My favorite beat ever is The Format by AZ and produced by DJ Premier. Though I also like the song J Dilla produced Little Brother for Black Star which is amazingly crafted.

[–]funkah 3 points4 points ago*

Probably Doom's Deep Fried Frienz. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiYDJ432b0U

[–]maxthaproducer 2 points3 points ago

[–]ParanoidAndroids 2 points3 points ago

Kick, Push will always have a special place in my heart, but all of Food & Liquor has some really solid production, especially The Cool and American Terrorist. Yeah, I love classic Lupe.

[–]peteWheeler 2 points3 points ago

Kingdom Come - Jay Z

Produced by Just Blaze. He took a sample that was essentially wasted by MC Hammer and turned it into something fresh and creative.

[–]splitwheel 2 points3 points ago

[–]Maynards 1 point2 points ago

Beauty is a Loaded Gun by k-os.

It is a sample of a Cortex song that Mellowhype also uses in Loco.

[–]bill1320 2 points3 points ago

Impossible to answer, but I'm a sucker for a loud snare, so I'll throw up Snoop Dogg - Serial Killa.

[–]adamcognac 2 points3 points ago

Affimative Action- The Firm Keisha Cole stole it for her "circles" song.

[–]mohobbo 2 points3 points ago

Cunninlynguists - As Hard As They Come

Or P.O.S -Optimist Just because it is so creative.

[–]The_MadStorkPretty Bitch 1 point2 points ago

I'm still going with Dipset - Salute. This is the shit you bang in the club on the eve of Armageddon. Panic and chaos and you're still looking for a freak

[–]illgoblin420 2 points3 points ago

Beatnuts - Props Over Here Funky bass in ya face

[–]billydanze 1 point2 points ago

[–]Facefacefacebeats 1 point2 points ago

For me, I can never see past The People by Common http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7B2VgRShew&ob=av2e. The way Ye chopped that Gil Scott Heron sample is incredible. Also Ms Fat Booty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFyTzjJDeCk Ayatollah is mad underrated.

[–]Zonged 2 points3 points ago

Release yo delf Fucking love horn tracks

[–]sperdojSquiggles 0 points1 point ago

I love how the producer isn't mentioned in 99% of these comments.

[–]THA_COOL 2 points3 points ago

(They Reminisce Over You - Pete Rock and CL Smooth)

Fuck yeah NBA street Vol. 2

[–]Rasassination 1 point2 points ago

It always seems to change. Right now it's

Mos Def - Mathematics

J Cole - Return of Simba

[–]iamfromprague 1 point2 points ago

M.O.P. - World Famous without a doubt

[–]chairmanlaue 1 point2 points ago

Don't really have an all time favorite... but some of them are : Are you ready, Funky Piano, My Kinda Moves is I suppose one of my all time faves, Got it Bad Y'all or any beat (for the most part) that uses Ode to Billie Joe..

So many good ones... I have no true favourite at any given time I guess.

[–]Jurmandesign 1 point2 points ago

The first thing that popped in my head was Da Rockwilder

I also have to put Respect and Don't Say Nuthin' in for consideration.

[–]gabidallas 1 point2 points ago

"The Red" by J Dilla, I believe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99vhSj-ffkQ

Nuthin' But A G Thang

I don't need to link this because if you don't know what this sounds like you don't deserve to be breathing.

[–]fernberg338 2 points3 points ago

I'd have to say mostly anything by Aesop Rock. Both Blockhead beats and Aes' self-produced beats are always so different and gives all their songs such a flavor. I also like most of A Tribe Called Quests' 'Low End Theory.'

[–]kidmono 1 point2 points ago

[–]hadlari 0 points1 point ago*

[–]ProfessorGoldfront 0 points1 point ago

Sunscreen - Jimmy Greek, produced by Rummage. Crazy fire beat, terrible raps. Still searching for the instrumental so I can do it some justice.

[–]cunning_succulence 1 point2 points ago

J Dilla - Circus / Tsutchie - Sincerely, hard to choose

[–]ImmanuelXavier -1 points0 points ago

The beat at the end credits of Boondocks.

[–]jedijesus 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Lupe Fiasco - Birds and the Bees (prod. Kanye West)

[–]apwob1 0 points1 point ago

Spitshine by Xzibit. Tasty.

[–]portachking 0 points1 point ago

[–]ProstheticPoetics 0 points1 point ago

Speech Cobras - Jedi Mind Tricks It's not that complicated, but that intro from Pi set's the mood well.

[–]landob 1 point2 points ago*

Zion I - Innerlight (Icy Remix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuAjxko9Iag Chill, laid back and makes my subwoofer move. Gives a great calming effect imo.

[–]Procrastibater 0 points1 point ago

The easy answer is 2pac "can't C me.".

As far as a beat that just makes you want to go out and so some hoodrat, gangsta shit... This just can't be beat. It I had to make a list of top ten beats, Dr. Dre would have created at least half of them

[–]branqon 0 points1 point ago

Lotta good ones in here. I'm going to say Kanye West - RoboCop or OutKast - Mainstream.

[–]realninja 0 points1 point ago

ONe of my favorites thats not too popular..

Guru, Lil' Dap & Kai:Bee - The way it iz

[–]ThatSawyer 0 points1 point ago

Tough question... It's hard to narrow it down to just one favorite. There are classics all the way from 'South Bronx - BDP' to 'Drones Over BKLYN - El-P'

[–]Kuhrohnik 1 point2 points ago

Impossible to answer. Depends on the mood. Am I pensive or pumped? High or drunk? Chilling or going HAAM? Nearly 90% of the beats listed here are classics and would all be on my list. But to pick one? Can't do it!

[–]36_chambers 0 points1 point ago

[–]AAlpine 1 point2 points ago

[–]PANCAKES_FORTHWITH 0 points1 point ago

el-p, deep space 9mm

[–]Jaques_Naurice 1 point2 points ago

[–]BlackManistan 0 points1 point ago

End of Days is my favorite. I love Stoupe's tracks, can't get enough of them. Sorry this isn't the Instrumental, I couldn't find a good one.

[–]itdonbeok 1 point2 points ago

I'm gonna be alone on this but, Illest Motherfucker Alive - Jay-z and Kanye West.

[–]FarStox 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to have to go with this: The KGB-Binary Star

Or maybe this: MF DOOM-Gas Drawls

Definitely a tough question to answer; I'll probably hear something else in the future that blows my mind again and again, but these would be some of my favorite songs even if there were no lyrics to go with them.

[–]PariahFish 1 point2 points ago

[–]Griinch 0 points1 point ago

[–]P0llyPrissyPants 1 point2 points ago

Feel Me Flow - Naughty By Nature. It just makes me feel good.

[–]justwantedtosaythis 1 point2 points ago

So many good beats in this thread. Nice to see some of my other favs in here too!

Well, I can't say I have one favourite, but two that I do really really love are:

The Primo beat is an unusual one. I wish I could find a pure instrumental version of it, but that beat is just amazing.

There are so many others that keep popping into my head, but I'm gonna keep it at just these two for today. :)

[–]poopsonlawn 1 point2 points ago

Not sure if it's my all time favorite, but Que Sera by Wax Tailor is just begging for a few DOOM verses. I've always wanted to hear someone rhyme over this beat.

[–]RocketSauce146 0 points1 point ago

I mean, it's more electronica than hip-hop, but I can imagine some awesome lyrics being delivered over this. Mr. Oizo's Inside the Kidney Machine

[–]wazawana 0 points1 point ago

"all black everything", lupe fiasco, "valhalla", k-os "rainbow in the dark", das racist "touch the sky", kanye west

[–]frogman15 0 points1 point ago

No doubt for me, it's Dj Premier's beat in Gang starr - Sabotage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nSZFG45k-E

[–]thorin92 1 point2 points ago

Anything by dilla!

[–]EssenceLom 0 points1 point ago

Theory Hazit - Ghetto. That whole album is just incredible

Ski - Dead Presidents (Jay Z)

Kid Koala - Positive Contact (Deltron 3030)

J Dilla - Runnin' (The Pharcyde)

So rugged.

[–]TheCaterpillar 1 point2 points ago

[–]Oddish420 0 points1 point ago

Can't choose just one off of 36 Chambers...

[–]fixthesky 0 points1 point ago

Difficult, but I narrowed it down to this DropXlife

[–]littlequestions 0 points1 point ago

track called "Das Wolf" by BB & JF

[–]Dudefromevanston 0 points1 point ago

One Day-UGK The beat Is so funky and there are few others songs I enjoy bumping in my car while puffing on a bowl.

A close second would have to be Hip Hop by Dead Prez. it may be slightly cliche, but nothing makes me happier than listening to that song in a car with subwoofers, it's like a full body massage....

[–]dulla123 0 points1 point ago

[–]anyquestions 1 point2 points ago

Mine goes to the ethereal beats behind Gravediggaz' 1-800-Suicide.

[–]lergnom 1 point2 points ago

Dr. Octagon - Real Raw.

It's the simplicity of it, I think. No hooks, just instant head-bobbing.

[–]bassbin 1 point2 points ago*

No love for New York State of Mind?

or Liquid Swords?

I can't ever just pick one. There are some amazing tracks already in here, as well.

[–]swaglikewags 0 points1 point ago

Nasisnasisnasisnasisnasisnasislike - Nas

[–]RoboticParadox 1 point2 points ago*

Probably not high on anyone's list, but I always loved Faithful by Common. That guitar sample is funky as fuck.

[–]AccidentalNutTouch 1 point2 points ago

"Drop" - Pharcyde

[–]wanzie 0 points1 point ago

So hard to choose just one, so I picked something I've been into recently. A relatively unknown Doom joint, from DangerDoom: MF Doom - Crosshairs

[–]wanzie 0 points1 point ago

Straight from the Rhymesayers themselves: Blueprint - Checkmate

[–]dbick 0 points1 point ago

mobb deep - survival of the fittest. That beat is just ominous.

[–]powpowdoubles 0 points1 point ago

Too many to count. Two Can Win by J dilla, fancy clown by madvillain.

[–]Cheesepickle1 0 points1 point ago

Swerve - Shabazz Palaces They're a fairly new group too.

[–]ibombatomically 1 point2 points ago

Respiration by Black Star has to be my number one. Thieves in the Night is up there too. And even though it was made in 15 minutes, Exhibit C by Jay Electronica is perfection. And I almost forgot, Classic by DJ Premier. Hard to pick just one Premo but that's the first one that comes to mind.
