Hey sir, you forgot to talk about Public Enemies and Secret Window. He was the man in those. Holy crap they were great. He is my hero.

Oh my, thank you sir. At least you didn't mention Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Our kind like to pretend that one didn't happen. So shhh.

Honestly, his performance was quite good, and different; it was the Michael Jackson make-up that really ruined it (and the fact that, quite simply, Gene Wilder is Willy Wonka).

I agree there...I think he did a good job, but less extreme makeup would have been nice. To be honest I still like the remake. I love the original too, but I liked the kid who played Charlie more in the new version...he also did Finding Neverland with JD which is one of my favorite movies.

I think it's just the case that people were expecting a Wilder Wonka and that simply wasn't his character in Charlie.

That's true.

Has anyone in this thread read the book? ...I'm curious which Wonka version is more inline with the book's characters.

I've always meant to, but never have. I enjoyed every other Roald Dahl books too.

Roald Dahl is the literary equivalent of Johnny Depp. Pure awesome.

He's one skilled actor, that's for sure. He's also my illegitimate father.

That calls for an IAMA!

So many things in my strange little life call for an IAMA. My Johnny Depp theory is pretty much just a theory, a far-fetched one at that. But who knows maybe I really am his son, wouldn't that just beat all?

He's still gorgeous but needs to give up that stupid partnership with Tim Burton. It went from great to just OK.

I don't think he has much range. Honestly, he's always playing a quirky, eccentric character.

Edward Scissorhands wasn't much of a role. Fear and Loathing he was awesome in.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Sweeney Todd? Pirates of the Carribean? Alice in Wonderland? The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus? Ed Wood? They all appear to be the same type of role. He's either eccentric, insane and quirky, or he's dark, brooding and misunderstood (Secret Window, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Cry Baby, From Hell, etc.).

I disagree. He's good at the roles he plays because he always plays the same roles.

Depp is probably the Marlin Brando of our generation. He plays a wide range of roles very well. Granted, some of his characters are quirky, he was great in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and that wasn't a totally insane character.

Don't forget Blow, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and Sleepy Hollow.

EDIT FOR GRAMMAR

He was in the original Nightmare on Elm Street, it was his first movie.

Public Enemies, Ed Wood, What's Eating Gilbert Grape...all great movies.

but can you deny it?

Yes, I can. He's my number one hated actor, I loathe him from the bottom of my heart.

he plays every role perfectly. Captain Jack Sparrow-done. Mad Hatter - perfect. Edward Scissorhands - awesome. Raoul (fear and loathing) - THAT'S JOHNNY DEPP?! Damn he's good. Sweeny Todd - He'll handle that. Roux (Chocolat) - Wow, he's got range.

He looks the same in every movie. His facial expressions are always same. He never seems to get in to those roles. He's worst actor I've ever seen. I fucking hate him.

PLUS! He's fugly as hell.
