We really can't say this election is legit in any way. The federal government didn't want the law passed, it has big money in prohibition, it is not above them to tamper with the votes.

They did it in 2001, 2004, here in Colorado in 2006.

This is a government that goes to war on lies, agrees with torture, and see its citizens as an enemy to be jailed.

[–]emptyhunter 123 points124 points ago

Urgh. The fact that even some smokers were against this makes my blood boil - how they came to the conclusion that 19 would hurt their ability to smoke weed is beyond me. "Oh but dealers will go out of business". FUCK DEALERS. The majority of them are bad people who are associated with gangs and i'd much rather by my weed from a god damn 7-11 or some shit rather than some shady guy who's sending money back to mexico and making me wait in a parking lot for 3 hours cos he's late.

[–]specialk16 89 points90 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way I see it, if you voted no, you are contributing the kidnaping, torturing, and execution of countless people in Mexico, and many more when this shit spreads all over the region (and it will spread to Central America).

[–]emptyhunter 43 points44 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats exactly how I see it too. Criminalization is doing nothing but fund illegal gangs. Well, it was close but it looks like its over. Fuck the war on drugs, fuck the electorate for voting in Republicans all across the nation and getting rid of true progressive fighters like Feingold and Greyson and fuck all the ignorant and uneducated idiots who still cling on to the idea that marijuana is a dangerous and deadly drug, its not, and we need a fucking sensible drug policy.

CNN is calling it at 20% reported :(

Alameda county is only 53% for. The Sacramento area is all against. Very surprising.

Unsurprisingly southern California went derp and fell for the propaganda.

And only 30% of republicans voted yes. Seriously, 70% of republicans are confused people. They want smaller government so they vote for big government. Yeah, turn off the tv and try using your own brain.

Still possible to pass with high absentee turnout:

*"The most recent statewide report says 7.3 million absentee ballots have been issued, which surpasses the record for early ballots requested for a general election. The previous record of 7.1 million was set during the November 2008 election that put President Barack Obama in the White House."

*As of now, the results at 30% turnout are:

55% against 1,900,926 45% for 1,534,441 3,435,367 is the current 30%

  • Extrapolating at this rate, the final tally before the absentee ballots would be:
  • Total 11,451,223
  • Against 6,298,173
  • For 5,153,050

With 7,300,000 absentee requests, a return of 65% in favor would lead to a result of 4,745,000 for and 2,555,000 against. These results tip it in Prop 19's favor by a large margin. It doesn't even need to be near that 2-1 margin to pass.

If it continues to get any more favorable, it becomes more and more possible.

It is STILL close. Let's make sure these ballots are COUNTED.

Eh:

  • 55 for/45 against on 7,300,000 absentee ballots

*gets you there nearly twice 400k.

I don't smoke because it's illegal. That's not to say that I think it should be illegal. I just mean I don't smoke because I have too much at stake if I get caught and it's not worth the paranoia. from here:

SAN FRANCISCO – Vote-by-mail is becoming the preferred choice in California.

For the first time in California’s history, more than one-half of the votes cast in Tuesday’s statewide general election were expected to be through the mailbox rather than at the precincts.

The Field Poll estimates that after all ballots are counted, approximately 9.5 million Californians will vote. Of that number, about 55% will be by mail using an absentee ballot. Those voting in person at the precincts will account for 45% of the total.

A turnout of 9.5 million would be a small increase of about six hundred thousand voters over the vote count in 2006, the last gubernatorial election.

...so don't get too psyched out by early results. My gut feeling is it's going to be close (at least close enough to get something that will pass on the ballot in 2012 if it doesn't make it this time).

[–]ChairGraveyard 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have all the by-mail votes been received at this point? If not, when will they count them and announce the real results?

[–]ungoogleable 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absentee ballots (edit: received before election day) are actually the first to be counted. The numbers you're seeing are likely absentee ballots.

[–]liquidxxd 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

i think a young voter turn out is what was needed, and based on the exit polls, we didn't get that. 13% between 18-29 (8% 18-24, 5% 25-29). good job to all the lazy fucks who didn't vote.

45% of the voters were between 40-64 and we got what they wanted. 44% yes 56% no

[–]Ryan7395 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There really should be a law that everyone has to vote, like Australia. The attitude for a lot of people is that even if they vote, it won't make a difference. If all these people had to vote, then the results would be more accurate, and not favor old people because they have more time on their hands, and were raised differently.

[–]SoCalCove 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

wow only 13% of the young vote? that's really disappointing. If this doesnt get them out to vote, the youth vote is essentially a myth. Considering how relatively narrow the votes are so far (44 to 56 percent), a strong youth vote could very much have carried it with all their social contacts and bring people to vote if they treated it as the 'thing' to do.

[–]enthos 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't misinterpret this. It's not that only 13% of young people voted. It's that 13% of those who voted were young people, which is an important distinction because the youth isn't really that large of a demographic.

That said, it's still fucking depressing.

Isn't this the first time that a full recreational/industrial use of marijuana has been on a state ballot? If it passes, if it fails; it still has brought this conversation to the living rooms of american people. Some people have changed their mind, and some people have learned something. Win or lose...this is only a battle in the Drug War. A win is to be celebrated, but a loss is not the end. Keep hope, ents, keep working.

[–]alergictomorning 12 points13 points ago

An earlier "proposition 19" was on the ballot in 1972. It called for the legalization of marijuana and, of course, failed.

What pisses me off is people who don't smoke and vote no simply because they don't smoke and fuck everyone who wants to. When almost half of the population want it, but not quite half, yet its still illegal something is wrong with democracy. Laws are meant to keep people from harming others. Smoking Marijuana doesn't hurt the people who voted no, its quite sad how selfish others are, why don't they see what I see?

Wether this is passed or not, this is just the beginning, and the fact that the vote is so close is amazing. I am proud of California's fuck you to the federal government, I hope to live there some day.

[–]Yeargdribble 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never smoked weed, done an illegal drug or even taken a drag off of a cigarette in my life. But I'm also very frustrated and wished I could've cast a ballot in Cali for this. It's ludicrous that marijuana is illegal while alcohol is not when you look at the comparative dangers of each.

Too many people probably voted no because weed is bad. Why is it bad? Because it's against the law. Great logic, but I know that this is the primary reason people think it's bad. We get brainwashed into it as kids. "Just say NO!" education stamps it into us that it's bad because it's like every other drug (nothing like aspirin because that's a good drug... because it's legal, right?).

I grew being force fed this propaganda and it pisses me off all of the absolute bullshit I was taught that had nothing to back it up.... in a public school. We were all told how incredibly dangerous grass was. How it would permanently kill all of our brain cells and stay in our lungs forever. They literally even told us that pot was more detrimental to the lungs than cigarettes. God forbid people ever learn to think for themselves. We've gotta make sure we lie to our kids to protect them just in case they start trying to think for themselves. Marijuana was the #1 most vilified drug in our anti-drug education. Not coke. Not heroin. Not LSD. Marijuana... wtf...

So..it didn't pass tonight. But hey, it created a huge stir in mainstream media. It will be an issue politicians will have to face again in the near future, and not just in Cali. There is a large wall that is the stigma against Cannabis climbers. Recently we've being taking it apart brick by brick. Prop19 just slammed a fucking wrecking ball into that bitch, and though maybe it didn't completely crumble, one or two good wacks and it will be done for.

Younger Ents, it will happen in our lifetime. And most likely sooner than later.

Looks like you'll be waiting another 20 years, America.

Realistically though, it's already legal. They don't prosecute or arrest you, I don't even think they write you a ticket half the time.

The only real difference is that CA is gonna be losing out on tax revenue and business development for new marijuana related businesses.

Dear Californians, As an ent from down under (Australia), you may not think I would care if your state legalised our favorite herb. But here's something: You had a chance to push that boulder. To give it the momentum that it needed to break that mould and start a cascade of states in your own country and abroad legalising it. You had a moment today, a chance to push an agenda we down here could never dream of proposing. It's political suicide here.

You could have started us talking. You could have done so much.

Son, I am disappoint.

No!no! no! god damn it all!

I have watch so many friends isolate because they were treated like scum because they were sick and used drugs as a way out, I have lost too many peaceful friends to law enforcement while violent pricks get cautions and good behaviour bonds. I am so sick of this stupid war and the pile of mounting bodies!

This looked like a chance for science and sanity to prevail, for a change in attitude towards drug problem.

there is pretty much a trend at this point unfortunately. Though some high population centers are just starting to get their numbers in...its going to be pretty much San Fran area to drive it. Even though some counties already are at 40% reporting in and its pretty much a consistant 44% to 56% give or take.

damn shame

If my home state, the most progressive state in the country cannot pass Prop 19 and passes, and in turn passes the bullshit that is Prop 23 ... Well I would just lost a lot respect for this state which I love so much. A state which it has always politically and social it represent progress and the future for where America could go.

I don't live in Cali...but are you sure it's the most progressive state? From my understanding, it's pretty conservative in the rural parts. Mass., Vermont, Washington, and Oregon seem more progressive than Cali.

SF voter here- It's not happening but it is so easy to get pot here that this was largely ornamental. Up to an ounce is a traffic ticket. You can pay 90 bucks, get a card and you're legal. The actual law for Prop 19 was poorly written with way too many loopholes to let the most influential campaigns get behind it. 2012 it's gonna happen, and the world is going to END,lol

It must be that organized crime is behind the lobby to say no to drugs. They are the ones with the most to lose should marijuana is legalized. Next would be the alcohol and cigarette manufacturers. By legalizing, regulating and taxing marijuana the government has a new revenue stream. With the money raised from the taxes appropriate treatment facilities could be put in place for those with addiction issues, and better education programs could be developed to deter youth from using drugs.
America, you've lost the war on drugs, and frankly are criminalizing a lot of everyday people.

Being Australian, i cant even fathom the concept of being sent to jail for a personal amount of weed (here its decriminalized and in some states can grow 2 plants legally). Which by the way is the Australian Capital Teritiory, basically your Washington in USA (Damn politicians haha) Your criminal laws really boggle the mind. At least you guys are decriminalizing, and furthermore, with 46% voting yes it is a fairly huge shoutout to the government that change does need to happen, and that there is a lot more than your average stoner bum supporting this cause. Regardless of weather it passes is irrelevant, the fact that it is so incredibly close is amazing. The distinction between 46% and 51% is so minimal it is encouraging, and frankly its only a matter of time. It is just disappointing that you didn't get the ball rolling for the rest of the world just yet, but surely its only a matter of time. Props to all who voted!!

Please die peacefully at your earliest convenience. You won't even be here to suffer the dreaded changes proposed by the "God damned kids these days". In exchange, we are willing to stay off of your lawns. In the bright future that time did not invite you to, we will have our own grass.

Sincerely,

It's not solely the older voter's fault. The youth didn't vote, 18-34 year olds only made up around 30% of those who voted. It will NEVER pass if you don't vote for it. If you want to blame someone just look around you at your peers. They screwed you.

[–]p1nkfl0yd1an 9 points10 points ago

Humboldt won't be voting yes. The big growers don't care if it's legalized because it only legalizes 25sq feet/1oz. They also don't want the street prices to decline as a result of this. Many growers up there are in it solely for the money... not supporting the tree cause.

[–]therewontberiots 4 points5 points ago
