Finally decided to game with something other then my mac. Going to buy a 360. I want it cheap but not unreliable. Where, What, When should I buy? (self.xbox360)
submitted 7 months ago by Maxmessi
Title pretty much says it. In more depth, should I get an elite? Does memory matter? What should I not buy? Where are they sold cheap? Thanks!

The average demo ranges from 500mb-2gb. 4gb is not enough, unless you plan on playing one game at a time and don't plan to use it on the Internet.
[–]HelloMcFly 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Here is a 250GB brand new Xbox 360 (the new model) S for $250. Use Bill Me Later to get $25 off.

costco.

You can then use it as a media centre.

Well, I have an arcade and except for the Hard Disk, I don't feel like there's anything really lacking. I don't even buy DLC or XBLA games of any sort. And in fact I didn't start playing online until about 3 months ago. Basically what I'm saying is that my 360 is very, very barebones.
And I love it.
If you choose your games intelligently, it'll be the greatest thing you will have ever owned. These are the games I've played and it has been amazing.
GTA:IV.
Red Dead Redemption.
L.A. Noire.
CoD 4 and Modern Warfare 2.
Gears 1, 2 and 3.
Halo: Reach (I don't quite recommend Halo 3 because while the multiplayer is awesome, the single player doesn't quite satisfy unless you play on Heroic and are a big Halo fan.)
Just Cause 2.
I bought these games and I've loved every moment of them. A whole new world of amazing games awaits you. Have fun.

an "arcade" is a 4gb, correct?
[–]dhvl2712GT: DhavalAnjaria 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago*
Nope. Just a 256 MB memory unit. I have a 8GB flash drive attached to it though. I use 4GB for the save games and the odd demo I download, and another 4 for whatever music or videos I want to watch on the 360. It's not a hard disk but I don't really buy DLC or XBLA much so it's sufficient.
The Bottomline is that I can play Gears 3 cooperatively with my best friend who doesn't have an Xbox, and play MW2 online practically without lag even though I have a terrible internet connection.
Awesome, thanks.
[–]jbigboote 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
get the 4GB, new. it is $200, and there have been some deals recently in the $175-$187 range. You can always add the hard drive later, and it will cost less than the $100 premium Microsoft charges for the 250GB (soon to be the 320GB) console.
In the meantime, you can use up to two USB flash drives at the same time for extra storage. the max is 16GB each, so you could theoretically get 32GB of extra storage if you buy two flash drives with a large enough capacity to host the 16GB-worth of Xbox 360 files (for all practical purposes they would have to be two 32GB drives to get the maximum).
[–]JustYourLuck 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
I absolutely cannot recommend the 4GB version, unless you really are going to buy two 16GB flash drives and put them in your 360 permanently. Otherwise, only go for 4G if the price of the 4GB version + a 250GB drive is less than the 250GB version.
Installing one game will not fit on the 4GB. Installing games is really, really nice -- less load times, no disc scratches. Also marketplace games will fill up the 4GB quick. I upgraded from 4GB to 250GB recently and cannot believe I waited so long.
[–]Dunhamzzz 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
Agree, installing games is really a must! Plus when you get Xbox live you'll want to download games from the marketplace and 4GB is just too restricting for any of the decent ones (like the full 3d games such as portal, Battlefield 1943, Monday Night Combat etc)
[–]daretogo 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
The 4gb at full retail ($200) and a $38 250gb Slim hard drive saves you quite a bit over the retail 250GB package. And technically then you have 254.
Edit: No you will not get banned for using a 3rd pary hard drive. There is no difference. You can acutally buy a regular 2.5 SATA drive and hack it into a 360 compatible drive I've done it. It works.
well OP said he wanted cheap, and there is no denying the 250GB is 50% more expensive than the 4GB. and the hard drive can be had for less than $100. and I listed a cheap ($20/16GB) workaround. and the Halo Reach issue should be fixed in the October title update:
Enable playing Co-Op Campaign and Firefight without requiring a HDD.
[–]JustYourLuck 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
I don't disagree with you. If he uses the 2x16GB flash drive workaround or can find the 250GB hard drive cheaper, go with that. However, as I said, 4GB is just not enough.
[–]jbigboote 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
amazon has it right now for $91 delivered (assuming OP is in the US). I've seen them go for less, but you have to do your homework.
I'm not interested in buying any games online/in the xbox, but will I be able to do Live with the limited hard drive?
If you don't get free DLC, if your games need mandatory updates, if you don't install games, or if you go with the 16GB flash drive option.
if you are on a budget, do consider using the 16GB flash drive(s).
Wow, Thanks! Is 4gb good enough to keep the save games for 20 max games?
[–]Flammy 3 points4 points5 points 7 months ago
4 gb won't help if you plan on buying DLC or getting free DLC. it will be taken up by just save games and patches.
My suggestion for where to get it is Costco (if you have a membership), for the super amazing return policy. Its not cheap and they don't sell 4 gb consoles in all stores but I've taken advantage of their returns when I've broken mine twice now, and its been amazing.
[–]Confucius_says 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
i recomend you get the 250 gb version. 4gb it's really just enough for save games and stuff. It's not enough for any downloaded content like DLCs or game patches.... Though the upgrade from 4 gb to 250gb is quite a bit considering you are only getting 250gigs for that extra 100 dollars youre paying.
[–]jbigboote 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
4GB will hold plenty of save game data. but there are also title updates (some of which are hundred of MB), and if you buy any games, it will fill up very fast. You can use as many flash drives as you like for storage, but you can only access two at a time.
[–]venom8599 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
What game has had title updates that big? Most I see are in the 1-50MB range.
[–]Ampersam 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Games like Burnout Paradise or Battlefield: Bad Company 2 like to release big expansion pack DLC that comes with a mandatory patch including all the new content - for both of those games it was larger than 1.5gb and you couldn't play online without it.
Um. I just popped in BC2 after clearing my consoles cache (deletes all title updates as a side effect) and the only mandatory update I had to download was 14MB.
[–]jordanlund -2 points-1 points0 points 7 months ago
4GB isn't enough for some games. For example... co-op mode in Halo Reach requires a hard drive.
[–]redion1992 2 points3 points4 points 7 months ago
Nope, the latest title update fixed that, I believe.
[–]erizzluh 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago*
Yeah, if you're trying to save money, I also highly recommend buying the most basic console Microsoft sells which will be around $200 at its regular price. This is what I did when I bought my console, and then I just bought a third party 250 GB HDD off of ebay for $50-60 a few months later. I've been using the HDD for 3 years now, and I haven't been banned or warned by Microsoft. I feel like I got just as much out of my basic bundle as buying the premium bundle, and I saved $50. There's no reason at all to spend that extra $100.
EDIT: Here's a link to a $50 HDD. I can't vouch for how easy it is to install this HDD, but when I bought my older model HDD, I just snapped it on without having to open the 360. Took no more than 10 seconds. Wonder if anyone with a Slim can provide any info on how to insert a HDD on a slim, and if this $50 HDD with a basic bundle would be the equivalent of getting the premium bundle.

I have the 4gb version and play about 10 different games regularly. I generally don't have much space on the internal drive because I have a bunch of the xbox "extra" stuff like espn on xbox, netflix, hulu and other crap. If you are only playing games on it the 4gb with one or two Usb drives of at least 8 gb each should do you nicely. Anything beyond game only use and i would recommend upgrading the internal drive.
Will the 4gbs Red Ring?
[–]dangerflakes 1 point2 points3 points 7 months ago
Probably not. The slims were redesigned to help alleviate the issue.
no, because they don't red ring anymore. that's not to say it won't have some other failure. but aside from the embedded 4GB of flash memory, and some cosmetic differences, the 4GB and the 250GB are the same. I would not expect different failure rates.
Do not get an old-style 360. well, unless you can somehow find a new, still-sealed one. even then, they don't have built-in WiFi, so I would not buy it unless it was a steal.
[–]Sh4d0wy 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Just pick up a second hand original 360 but make sure it is the latest model you can tell by looking at the amp rating on the back. I believe that 11.1a signifies the latest version. I have recently got one and I couldn't be happier, it's really quiet and saved me a fortune, and it still came with 12 mth warranty!
[–]DevilPliers 4 points5 points6 points 7 months ago
Lots of people reported that they were unable to use xbox live on used 360s as they had been modded and banned. I don't believe this is covered in most retail warranties too..
[–]Dunhamzzz 0 points1 point2 points 7 months ago
Yeah don't go through ebay or anything get it from a second hand store IRL - the sort of place they check things before selling them.
[–]Sh4d0wy -1 points0 points1 point 7 months ago
I asked in all the shops here in the UK and they said that if a box was found to be banned, they would swap it out.
all it takes is a username and password
create account
is it really that easy? only one way to find out...
already have an account and just want to login?
