What People Say vs. What God Says by Nekrosis13in atheism

The second from the bottom made me think of a story. My aunt recently converted to Judaism (from Buddhism, and before that whatever church her scumbag ex-husband drug her to). We talk about religion a lot, and she has some funny stories about the conversion process. She and her rabbi were talking about Jesus and he told her 'Jesus was never the messiah. The messiah was supposed to bring about one thousand years of peace. Didn't happen. Wasn't him. Sorry.' Also, she's cooking kosher vegetarian food these days and I have to say it's delicious. Though one night I made bacon wrapped shrimp when she was around just to see the longing on her face.

Are you me?

A side note. An Indian man once told me the girls would love me in his country. Apparently hair loss is a sign of wisdom and facial hair is a sign of virility. I choose to believe him.

If you're not averse to a little fantasy, I just finished 'The Lies of Locke Lamora'. It's quick, fun, exciting, with great characters. It's a mystery novel, a caper story and just filled with intrigue. Also, it doesn't fall into the typical 'fantasy traps' like fighting the great evil prophesied millennia ago. None of that. Bonus, it's setting is kind of a fantastical re-imagined Renaissance era Venice. Complete with corrupt nobility, organized crime syndicates, rich culture and lots of bloodshed.

Wormwood mead? by jb0356in mead

[–]Algiers 0 points1 point ago

I've had absinthe from Amsterdam and the Czech Republic. Both were traditional, and fairly tasty. The psychoactive effect was a little weak though. Admittedly, I was doing a whole lot of psychedelics in those days.

It was a very energetic, drunken, fairy-viewing, rainstorm filled evening though... I take it back, I'm off to find some absinthe.

beer yeast for a mead by DEAD-Hin Homebrewing

[–]Algiers 1 point2 points ago

I'd suggest against it. I've been making mead for a while, and I've tried a number of yeasts with varying degrees of success. I used ale yeast at first, since it was all I had around, and they never turned out quite right. Too heavy, low alcohol content, off flavors. The works.

Champagne yeast works well for a sparkling, sweet, fruity yeast. I prefer Lalvin wine yeasts. Try the ICV D-47 for a relatively dry mead that will bring out the characteristics of the honey, with a respectable amount of alcohol.

Don't worry. Roughly half of what I spout on the internet is is emotionally driven nonsense. It's actually kind of great, because it's anonymous and you still grow and learn from it.

Sometimes I just argue for the pleasure of it.

As a nation's GDP and middle class grow, their birth rate tends to plummet.

This has always made me curious. Logically wealthier people would be more inclined to have children they could support. I know there is very little logic behind it. Broke and bored equals naked and sweating, if you have a mate. I know this. But the insanity of people who can't support a child not taking precautions always baffles me.

As for the burden on future generations, this is a legitimate concern. I'm no economist, and I'd hope smarter people than I can come up with solutions. However, I think population control is inevitable. Either we do it ourselves, or starvation will do it for us.

What unpopular opinions do you have? by dayus9in AskReddit

[–]Algiers 0 points1 point ago

Aside from my personal discomfort in highly populated urban areas, yes that is the gist of my argument. How does that double or triple consumption? Please, go on. I'm legitimately curious. It seems to me that any steps taken to control our use of natural resources, no matter how drastic, would be moot in a generation or two at our rate of population growth.

What unpopular opinions do you have? by dayus9in AskReddit

[–]Algiers 0 points1 point ago

How, exactly, do I double or triple consumption? The enforcement of said birth control? I think I missed something.

I agree that consumption needs to be reined in, but that isn't really an unpopular opinion. Unless you live in a woefully uneducated area.

[–]Algiers 4 points5 points ago

I believe in extremely strict dystopian style government enforced birth control. I'm not one for government intervention into our personal lives, but there are simply too damned many people. It will be our eventual downfall.

I propose that for a generation or two every person on this planet should be allowed only two children. If you have a child with one person, that counts as one child for each of you. If this were somehow magically enforced our population would cease to grow, and even shrink somewhat. I don't like it, but we're breeding out of control.

A number of questions, mostly about language. by Algiersin WoT

[–]Algiers[S] 1 point2 points ago*

EDIT: I have trouble with the belief that the old tongue died out shortly after the breaking, and here's why. Mat Speaks many dialects of the old tongue, from his memories. And it seems most of his memories are from before Hawkwing (those that don't take place in that time). However, I don't think any of him memories are from the Age of Legends. They're all battles from this age as far as I know. I like what you said about language spreading with Hawkwing's armies, that makes a lot of sense. But I thought the rise of his empire and the war of the hundred years happened about 1,500 years after the breaking. At least about halfway through the third age.

I haven't researched this part at all, and could easily be wrong so please correct me.

Okay. Most of what you said makes a lot of sense, but I think this point needs a bit of clarification. Mayhap I just misunderstood what you wrote here, so I apologize if I'm restating the obvious.

The way I understand it, an Age is a period of about three thousand years. Ages are tied to the war with the shadow, and the rebirth of the dragon. For example, the age of legends, called the second age by some, ended with the bore into the dark one's prison and the War of Power. The Dragon was there to fight the shadow and usher in the new age.

Unfortunately, I believe the only way for the Dragon to begin a new age is to destroy the previous one. Perhaps not, given Avienda's second trip into the columns. I'm not really sure. But I believe Hedrid Fel's not about clearing away the rubble before you can rebuild may mean more than we have been led to believe.

Anyway, it sounds like you are confusing what you call a cycle with an age. The Wheel of time is a loom, it weaves the lace of an age, which when pieced together creates a quilt we call the pattern. At least that's how I see it.

A number of questions, mostly about language. by Algiersin WoT

[–]Algiers[S] 0 points1 point ago

I've wondered this myself, but I think the answer is pretty mundane. In a book that takes place primarily in one land you can have foreigners speaking other languages. They're foreigners, and that's the way it works. But with the Wheel of Time, I think the nature of having people from many cultures interact made it a necessity to have one pervasive language.

I agree with your white tower theory. Even had Mr. Jordan decided to have different cultures speak different languages, I think the language of the white tower (and by extension Andor) would be the one of primary use. Kind of like English in modern day Europe. Everyone speaks their own language, but most people know enough English to get by, and it's the go to language for speaking to different cultures. Still, I could wish that the Aiel and Seanchan - maybe even the Sea Folk - spoke something else, at least to each other. Add a bit of flavor to the stew.

I tend to believe that her 'forcing' was the pattern's way of weaving her into the age lace for the last battle. It might be that she needed her memories to help the people in this age, rather than being born with no memories at all. If for nothing else than helping Mat with the tower of genji, those memories earned her keep.

The same parts of the bible that attack homosexuality were written by and for jews. No real point, just saying. Also, does anyone know where it says that blacks and jews should not have equal rights? I'd like to read the passage. I do find this somewhat difficult to believe, as jesus, was, y'know, a black jew. Wouldn't put anything past Paul though...

YES. Choice City it is. Of all the things I miss about Ft. Collins, that place is near the top of the list. I suggest it for anyone that loves beer who is in CO. As for the sour, it was in a bottle, under foreign (obviously), aged forever, and expensive as hell. But totally worth it. No other sour has really matched that one, but Boulevard's Love Child does a fair job.

Really? I like Sanderson quite a lot. The Way of Kings is highly promising, Elantris was entertaining, and his WoT stuff has been impressive. But I don't think I'll ever call him one of the most amazing authors ever.

Seriously, what about Mark Twain, Dostoevsky, Steinbeck and Borgess? Nabokov, Shakespeare and Faulkner? Even in the fantasy world, I think Martin and Guy Gavriel Kay have him beat. And, y'know, Tolkien.

I'm not trying to disparage your taste or Mr. Sanderson's talent. I still look forward to his upcoming work. Just, maybe, expand your literary horizons? You'll enjoy it, I promise.

Hey! What's the name of that restaurant downtown, that's a deli, sandwich shop and has an amazing beer selection? It's right off college, across the street form 'Taste of Philly'? I've been trying to remember for a while now.

And more importantly, what the hell is that one amazing Belgian Sour they have there? I NEED to find it again.
