ELI5: New Age Healing by bukkakenachosin explainlikeimfive

Just from personal experience, getting acupuncture, receiving reiki, and practicing tai-chi all give me similar feelings of heat and something flowing through me. Not scientific at all, but enough to convince me that there's something to it.

Does marriage really make people happier? Study finds few well-being advantages to marriage over cohabitation by kiowabluein science

[–]Altoid_Addict 0 points1 point ago

Eh, I think it really depends on the people involved. My fiancee and I have been together about 8 months, and we're getting married in July. When we were discussing it, I was worried about exactly what you're saying, but we have seen the worst parts of each other now, we're in the process of acknowledging our flaws, and our relationship is just as strong as it always has been, because we're not afraid to talk about all this honestly.

Over the holidays, I reconnected with a friend of mine who's been married 3 years. She said a big part of a successful marriage is learning how to accept each others' insanities. We've made a good start on that.

So my father's friend was visiting with his family, and he offered my father a job, one that he'd need to move for. Except he wasn't really offering, more like telling. I still don't really know why we couldn't stay at home, he promised that we'd be back soon, but it split up the family. My mom and brothers stayed home, and I left with my father and sister, even though my brother had just been hurt really bad. We weren't even sure if he'd live.

That wasn't the worst of it though. While we were traveling, I was play-fighting and it got out of hand, and my dog thought he needed to defend me, and ended up attacking my father's friend's son. So we had to put him down. I was inconsolable, and ended up yelling at my sister a lot. My dad did find me a cool martial arts teacher though, because he could see how much I was suffering. That taught me a lot about confidence and mental discipline, and I still find new ways to appreciate what I've learned from that time.

But my father kept seeming more and more stressed every time I saw him. Eventually he had a falling out with his friend, and he said we would be going back home soon. But before we left, his friend died, and my father ended up getting blamed for it. So they made him tell everyone in the city that he was a traitor and beheaded him. Fucking Lannister sons of bitches.

As for that bit about an "everlasting bubble", I've seen this "reasoning" before (that absurd "money as debt" video represents the pinnacle of popular economic misunderstanding) and it's utter hogwash.

I've seen that video too, and it's fairly convincing to a layman. I'd be interested in learning why it's so absurd.

What Are Books That You Thought You'd Love But Actually Hated? by MrSpitein books

I wouldn't read Mother Night first if I hadn't read any Vonnegut before. It's just so damn depressing. It is a good book, and I'll probably read it again soon, but you need to know what you're getting into.

How many elements do we have no practical uses for? by The_Quantum_Raptorin askscience

[–]Altoid_Addict 14 points15 points ago

You're right, but as atomic number increases, half-life generally decreases. So unless that trend wildly reverses itself somewhere, we won't find any element with atomic number 132 in nature, no matter how much we explore outer space.

Also, atomic mass is the number of protons plus the number of neutrons, and atomic number is just the number of protons. As an example, a stable isotope of Xenon has an atomic mass of 132.

Non-American Redditors, what have you learned/has surprised you about Americans or the USA since joining reddit? by Spindockin AskReddit

If you're just making a cup of tea, it works pretty well. That's the only time I used to do that. It's more convenient, since for tea you just need to get the water close to a boil. You can just fill your teacup and microwave it.

That could be love, or close to it, but it also sounds dangerously close to obsession. Trust me, I've been there.

IMO, the Harry Potter series is much better than the DaVinchi Code (which is the only one of his books that I've read, and I could be biased since I've only read it once, a long time ago). The series isn't perfect by any means, but it's an enjoyable read, even for an adult, and even though there's many things I'd do differently if I were writing it. Harry Potter consistantly has, among others, two things that I really enjoy in fiction; deep and compelling characters and an expansive world. I'm not sure if I'll enjoy reading the books through for a third time, but I enjoyed them enough the last time that I'm going to try sometime soon.

It seems like he's throwing himself into his work to distract himself from something. He sounds deeply unhappy about something, especially since he's losing interest in sex.

Also, you should talk more about how it seems like he's not enjoying your company, don't let him dismiss it just like that. He says it's not true, but you're picking up on something there.

It sounds like you're not doing much together. Possibly suggest something that you both enjoy that doesn't cost much money? My girlfriend and I enjoy walking to a park or browsing used book stores. Think of what brought you together in the first place. You can grow together based on that, but right now it sounds like you're growing apart.
