Came here to say I was raised on Beka books and I was the kid with all the questions. Also I was the kid who had one of the first computers at my house and was big into discovery channel (like my family still thinks of me as the discovery kid ((place relation here)) I would often get "talked" to if I repeated what I was learning outside of school since it didn't match the books answers quite often but I found a way around it. If I could show my sources I would get the questions right and thus began my grading of the teachers thing that I'm pretty sure they were not very proud of since they were being schooled by a X grader and they couldn't tell me to go screw off and just do what the book says since my family had donated heavily to funding the private school. I was kind of immune in many ways to the rules and I did my best to help others who weren't.

Ron Paul: Marriage should be done by the church or private contract. Government should be out of it. Agree or disagree? by AmoDmanin Christianity

[–]BrianThing 0 points1 point ago

Well I know this will be at the bottom but (maybe). This actually looks like many people working out a real issue between others. Woot! I have subbed to this for years and just lurked and this is the best convo on marriage I've seen in a good while and it is happening where it needs to happen too! Now go tell your flocks to contribute to the conversation and we could end all this crazy bickering between the "churches" and the "LGBT community" - (Obviously not all on either side is all doing the bickering and fighting just enough to make it look like Christians are pretty uninformed and arrogant )

An elderly lady is petitioning against jazz/rock/hybrid styles of music in specifically my church (SDA) and wants to get rid of our drum kit in the name of "Bringing pure, noble and elevating music back into the church." by RattsWomanin Christianity

[–]BrianThing 1 point2 points ago

I've been on the worship team at my church in the past and it was a simple sit down we had with the people causing the "complaint" but the sit down was by the pastor on our behalf. We expressed that all matter of music can be pleasing to the ear and as long as we were singing out of joy and making joyful music that brought edification to God we were "ok" and there isn't anywhere in the Bible detailing how we are to express our joy to the Lord through music. ---- Now for some context --- Our church was a free church and I was 17 (now 24), We were a "rock" group that kept up and could play Hillsong titles and we would basically take the oldie goodies and beef them up with some drums, electric guitar, and two female vocals and myself as a semi-lead male voice, Oh and of course bass and piano. We would do about a 4-7 song set that would range from a quite piano song, to a raging banger explosion worship song near the end. What we learned from doing such a variety was we were attracting lots of new people and ticking off all of the regulars who thought this music thing would pass and go back to normal once the "youth band"(newly assembled) was good and could be told and would learn their songs the way they liked them. The issue was simply style. People change over time and what they like changes too. Churches capture people in time in many ways I feel and it is most evident in worship tastes. I've learned through being a part of 7 different churches through the years that it is best to ignore the desires of the old generation who are completely in their own time zone and move on to music that captures the real meaning of worship and to even write your own songs and teach them to the church. I was never really that talented with music so I moved on but some of the others have gone on to lead their own worship bands in churches and even made a few of their own bands outside of church. kinda just a spill of thought and others might have a completely different experience and advice.

Neil deGrasse Tyson says commercial space travel is impossible. What are you thoughts, r/libertarian? by toSTONEiGOin Libertarian

[–]BrianThing 3 points4 points ago

I think it is viable for space travel. I believe people poses the ability to consume and collect information quickly enough that in the next generation alone we will see vast improvements in their abilities to learn and expand their minds to accomplish more with what all of our societies together have collected for information and begin crafting a detailed "movie" of history with recorded history vividly playing for all to have a common ancestry. Point being people will do what we have not done yet and will do it faster than we have ever seen done before. Heck 12 year old are some of the fastest most adept gamers just imagine if they were paying such close attention to interactive live learning environments.

What if I choke a real business (literally (( By that I mean I would go out and film myself guillotine style executing businesses in my back yard and the police have to recognize it as a murder since the businesses I killed have rights as the US recognizes)) the business could be created by me and I could even name the business Isaac. Actually as crazy as this sounds this would probably throw people for a huge wtf loop if they saw this being done each day to give perspective on why corporations cannot donate money and back politics like they currently are.
