I've dug through the inner recesses of my mind, and I still haven't found 'me'... Oh. This is actually borne out by a couple of really interesting experiments. In one experiment, they hooked volunteers up to monitoring equipment, then asked them to note the time on the clock, then choose at random whether to press button A or button B, and then press the button, in strict sequence. Turns out that the muscle potential priming the requisite hand to move was set up about a quarter of a second before the time they noted. The 'act of volition' was nothing more than constructing a false memory to explain their action to themselves. A second experiment involved split-brained patients, whose brain hemispheres had no way of communicating with each other. A message was communicated to one hemisphere (for instance, by written instruction), asking them to perform a mundane action, such as putting on their jacket. The other hemisphere was then asked (verbally, iirc) to explain why they performed the action. In every case, the uninformed hemisphere claimed to have chosen the action for some entirely plausible reason - they were cold, or wanted to ensure they could hear their phone - and with utterly painful honesty, they remembered deliberately choosing to do so. You, my friend - or at least the person you think of as you - are a fictional character, living a life continuously retconned into existence by your utterly mechanistic brain like a cheap plot hack, by your brain trying to explain its own actions.
