Study: The most conservative Republicans express lowest levels of speech complexity by PinkSlimeIsPeoplein psychology

[–]DuncanCV 13 points14 points ago

As measured by the length of words and the length of sentences. Run on sentences are not a sign of intelligence, nor are ten-dollar-words. This is really a measure of obfuscation - educators use it to see if a student of a certain grade level can likely decode the passage, but it ignores COMPLETELY the ideas contained in a passage. This study is pretty meaningless. If you want to know how smart politicians are, you have to listen to them.

Why does a number raised to zero equals 1? by ghredditin explainlikeimfive

[–]DuncanCV 75 points76 points ago*

This helped me understand.

23 = 8

22 = 4

21 = 2

20 = 1

2-1 = 1/2

Each time you decrease the exponent by one, you are in effect dividing by X.

It makes sense that if moving from X3 (X * X * X) to X2 (X * X) means dividing by X, that X1 should mean dividing by X again. And X-1 means dividing by X again, or 1/X. This is just a convention based on the relationship between X2, X3, X4, etc. It would be possible to come up with a different convention, but this one works well and is quite useful.

ELI5: Why is it comfortable to sit with your legs crossed? by spacebearin explainlikeimfive

[–]DuncanCV 1 point2 points ago

My best guess is that you (and many other people) are enjoying the deep pressure sensation; crossing your legs puts pressure on nerve receptors deep in your joints and muscles, ones that don't often get much stimulation (particularly if you don't exercise a lot). This would fall under the heading of 'sensory integration'.

So the LI5 answer is "Because it makes your body feel good". Sometimes being five is very simple.

I believe that this is the source, although it still has that mysterious blank square in the lower right corner.

They had this in an ice cream shop in Cape Verde in 2004... Didn't try it. It was bright blue there too.

I was actually hoping that the original would be a higher resolution.

The article is poorly written and poorly thought out. But a great idea. Someone with access to a better interviewer should do this.

British Sea Forts by occupyfacebookin pics

[–]DuncanCV 14 points15 points ago

"The Maunsell Forts were small fortified towers built in the Thames and Mersey estuaries during the Second World War to help defend the United Kingdom by deterring and reporting German air raids. The forts were decommissioned in the late 1950s and later used for other activities. One became the Principality of Sealand." -- Wikipedia

"The vast shift in national income toward our richest 1% is especially vivid if their income is expressed in terms of the median household income." by DuncanCVin Economics

[–]DuncanCV[S] 2 points3 points ago

The solution in the NY article is a bit extreme; that's why I linked this article instead. The main point in this article is that it is important that the politicians be talking about something real, rather than making stuff up. This article presents a good metric to use when talking about the problem. It may of course be found that there is no problem, but it would be foolish to try to make that determination when people don't have any clear idea what they are talking about. Something like this is a necessary basis for holding any debate.

[–]DuncanCV[S] 0 points1 point ago

I would have thought that the average household income would be rising steadily, as it becomes more and more common to have two wage-earners rather than one. Am I missing something?

'Shape', a gallery by Quentin Arnaud - why do these pictures make us uncomfortable? by jakashin psychology

[–]DuncanCV 4 points5 points ago

You are neurologically programmed to focus on the face; these pictures are sending your brain strong cues to look for a face, and then not providing it. So on some level, this may even be a sensory integration issue. On anther level it's just creepy because it suggests disfigurement, although you should get over that as soon as you see what's going on.

Airliner seats are also VERY carefully engineered for both safety and compactness. Your seat doesn't threaten you, but they do threaten the head of the person behind you.
