This is exactly why the protest has gotten to this point. Many people who previously did not agree with the students now join the protest because of the extreme measures put forth by Charest. That was probably the dumbest move he could make. I'm not sure what he expected, but it was pretty obvious that he would only cause the whole thing to explode.

So what? Just because you pay a lot for your education doesn't mean we have to follow blindly. I'm not for the student strike, but I'm really tired of this getting brought up. Just because everyone else does something one way doesn't mean it's the right way. Maybe the rest of North America is content with paying shit load for their education (that said, looking at the number of threads and posts about Americans and their student loans, I would say the rest of North America certainly isn't!), but that doesn't mean Quebec should to.

TL;DR "Quebec students should not complain because they have the cheapest education in NA" is pretty much an Argumentum ad populum.

They don't want lower taxes. They want their high taxes to be used to provide low education fees.

So I bought Political Puppets... by ShiniSamain magicTCG

[–]Filobel 1 point2 points ago

It's a hard deck to play because you have to play the political game a lot. That said, you can't count on politics alone, you need to create a state where it is disadvantageous for your opponents to attack you rather than another player. Edric is obviously great for that, but there's also stuff like propaganda/ghostly prison/Norn's Annex, etc. Play a few good walls too. They are great in the deck because they make it harder for other players to attack you, but you also don't mind giving them away too much.

Frankly, most EDH decks should go bonker if left alone, so as the PP player, it shouldn't be too hard to point your finger at the most powerful player on the table and say "Attack him or he'll play mimeoplasm on his trike+lord of extinction! I'll help you, here, have my dude!"

Casting Undying Evil on Creature (w/ undying) by ReadyplayerTwoin magicTCG

Actually, pretty much every creature that had a lifelink like ability before lifelink became a keyword worked like exalted angel. A quick search brought 24 cards, though that may not be the exact number.

One of the biggest offender was Genju of the Fields. You could activate its ability multiple time to give it multiple instances of its pseudo lifelink ability. Say you had 8 mana, you could activate it 4 times to gain 8 life when it dealt damage.

That's because those don't have lifelink. Their ability works differently (as explained by impetergraves).

Quick question about declaring blockers and attackers. by DankBeardin magicTCG

[–]Filobel 1 point2 points ago

Correct ruling, incorrect rule. 506.4a doesn't apply to the situation. A dead creature certainly is removed from combat. That said, once a creature is blocked, removing the blocker from combat doesn't change anything, the creature will stay blocked.

-=edit=- the relevant rule would actually be:

509.1h An attacking creature with one or more creatures declared as blockers for it becomes a blocked creature; one with no creatures declared as blockers for it becomes an unblocked creature. This remains unchanged until the creature is removed from combat, an effect says that it becomes blocked or unblocked, or the combat phase ends, whichever comes first. A creature remains blocked even if all the creatures blocking it are removed from combat.

(bold added by me for emphasis)

Quick question about declaring blockers and attackers. by DankBeardin magicTCG

[–]Filobel 0 points1 point ago

Um... a dead creature is most certainly removed from combat. However, that doesn't change the fact that a blocked creature stays blocked, regardless of whether or not the blocking creature is still in combat.

The rule you quote refers to something like playing Chaos after blockers are declared, tapping an attacker/blocker after it was declared attacking/blocking or giving defender to a creature after it was declared attacking.

I worried that I'm turning into a spike. :( by Shukoin magicTCG

[–]Filobel 1 point2 points ago

This is only true if you play competitively. If you play casually, there is no need to be a net deck in any proportion. In fact, if your casual circle plays multiplayer, you'd be the idiot if your deck was a netdeck as they rarely work when you have to take on multiple players (there are some exceptions of course).

Shape Anew/Splicer/Blink Standard - intended to go tier 1. What do you think? by rzwitserlootin magicTCG

[–]Filobel 0 points1 point ago

Only one ponder? I understand this isn't exclusively a combo deck, but seems to me like a deck that has a combo kill would want to run 4 of that thing, especially when it prevents you from drawing your colossus (let's face it, you won't always have a looter alive in play to discard your colossus).

You're now in charge of banning/unbanning cards. What card in which format would you ban/unban? Why? by tinyj316in magicTCG

First off, wasteland was only printed in one set. Strip mine was printed in multiple sets.

Second, people wouldn't replace their wasteland with strip mine, they'd play both.

You do realize of course that both the cards you mentioned also draw you a card, right? Urza's bauble actually saw competitive play. I guess subtlety is not your forte.

It's more important for scientists to know how to learn new things than it is for them to know existing things. You need to be resourceful and curious to keep growing as a scientist.

This AMA is way better than I expected. I never thought I would read something as insightful as that in an AMA about frozen food design!

Would it have been possible for me to find the accomplice on my own or did I need to go through the quest line?

Aren't they re-releasing BG? I guess I'll go over it again when they do. I finished BG2, both Icewind dales and both NWN. It still pisses me off that I wasn't able to finish BG!

I learned the hard way in Baldur's gate. At some point, you get poisoned and have to go convince (or kill?) some guy to get the antidote. I didn't know that at the time, but I had already met the guy I had to convince (or kill?) before and convinced him to leave town. When I got there and realized that there was no way for me to get the antidote, I didn't have any saves left from before I got poisoned.

I thought I'd just continue playing. All the poison did really was to display a message now and then when I rested that I woke up in the middle of the night with cold sweats and I puked or whatever.

Then, right when I was making my way to the final boss, the poison killed me. I reloaded dozens of time, trying to rush to the boss, but the best I managed to do was die at his feet.

This kids, is why I never finished the first Baldur's Gates.

TIL Whilst "Stop" signs in France are in English, in Quebec, they are in French by DressSexyAtMyFuneralin todayilearned

[–]Filobel 0 points1 point ago

Do you imply that the use of English words in Quebec language is anecdotal and uncommon?

Not at all. I am well aware of the amount of English words we use in our every day life. I'm implying that the use of English words in Quebec is done in slang. Although "se parquer" is used a lot in Quebec, you will not find it in any dictionary and it would be considered incorrect in anything formal. In France "un parking" is considered correct and is even in the French dictionary. That's what I mean by "officially", as opposed to Quebec where English words are used a lot, but these usage are considered improper and slang.

[–]Filobel 0 points1 point ago

Are you trolling me or are you just stupid?

Parking is not the same as parc. See how the two words are different or do I have to point out the differences? Just because a word comes from another word doesn't mean they are the same word. Even the meaning of it has changed (otherwise, we'd just call "Parking" parc in French).

Parking as used in French is just the English word "Parking". They're the exact same word. No effort was even done to turn it into a French word.

I'm french, and I tried to discuss car mechanics in Quebec... the whole vocabulary is in English.

In slang, yes. They do have a French word for all of it though. The thing though is that Quebecois use slang a lot. It's pretty rare that a car mechanic will use formal language for instance, even when talking to a stranger.

Good point about the idioms and sentence construction by the way. This is something I'm trying to work on personally, as I have to write a lot of official documents in my work, but it is true that we borrow a lot of sentence construction from English

I don't think people speak a "better" French in Quebec.

They certainly don't. As I said, Quebecois speak slang a lot. Some people know only slang. That said, I think that, as much hate as it gets sometimes, l'office québécois de la langue française is doing some good work keeping the language pure. This is the language thought in school. Whether or not the kids decide to use it or not, at least they are aware of what is correct and what isn't.

After all 29% of english words come from french.

True. English is also a nightmare precisely because so many words come from many different languages.

I've played with thunder-thrash elder enough to know that devour X guy is trash, unless you're going for some fling or pandemonium thing (and there are much better cards for both of those). You never wanted to sac more than 1 or maybe 2 creatures to thunder-thrash elder, because if you do and they remove it, the blow out is just too big. Thunder-trash elder is better than the devour X guy in every way unless you sac 4 or more creatures (and even at 4, there's not much difference between a 13/13 and a 16/16, but there's still a big difference between 2R and 3RG).

I understand this isn't a competitive minded set, but even in casual, if I'm going to pay 5 mana and sac a bunch of creatures, I'd like to have a little more than a big guy that dies to removal and doesn't have any form of evasion or even any interesting abilities once in play. I dunno, allow it to spread the counters around (for a relatively high cost, or at sorcery speed), or remove counters for mana (give it a once a turn restriction or else it gets broken). Anything that'll make it better than a bad uncommon from Shards of Alara.

To be fair, in Quebec, "park dans le stationnement" is considered slang, whereas in France, "stationne dans le parking" is considered correct.
