Of course, I do that most of the time but only as a workaround to not being able to close Chrome. I often have many tabs open simultaneously eating up a lot of RAM. If I want to go do something memory-heavy, like play some Dwarf Fortress, it's best to keep background applications to a minimum. Really, it's just that I'd've expected Google to have found a way to handle downloads better.
