"I think Hank is at the centre of his character.

Before his injury he could not let anyone else be the centre of attention, as demonstrated by the way Walter was marginalised at his own 50th birthday party. Hank had to be the star of the show and he was incapable of stepping aside out of the limelight for even a minute.

In his view no one is as big and strong and right as he is and his disabilities have severely shaken this view of himself. The "family man" persona is a a method of control, not love.

His relationships with colleagues were the joking bully. If anyone questioned him he would do the "You have no sense of humour, I was just joking." thing.

He does not listen to others as he assumes that they agree with him or that their opinion is not worth listening to.

He always thinks that he is right and he is right often enough to confirm this belief but this blinds him to other possibilities, situations and solutions that don't fit his world view. Something that doesn't fit his preconceptions is almost as catastrophic to his psyche as his physical injuries. His overconfidence leads him to underestimate others. He cannot imagine Walter as a strong person who takes risks and therefore cannot imagine Walter as Heisenberg.

The blow to his ego that accepting that Heisenberg was created right under his nose, is a member of his close family and has been there all along would be devastating to his reputation and status which are of inestimable value to him.

His construct of the world and his view of himself would be so undermined that although the "happy" ending for him would be to be a hero and discover Walter, the more realistic ending to Hank's story would be a completely broken man.

When/if Walter is discovered Hank will be more devastated by being made a fool of than he will be by the effect on his family which, psychologically at least, gives him good reason to ignore and rationalise any suspicions or doubts that he has about Walter.

In fact, I wonder if denial would prevent Hank from pursuing Heisenberg relentlessly if he had any inkling that he was in fact pursuing Walter."
