South Korea to Chemically Castrate Repeat Child Rapist by PrinceDakkarin worldnews

[–]Kardlonoc 0 points1 point ago

Just a thought: If you agree that it's OK to control the potential urges of a convicted child rapist with hormone therapy, your saying that it's OK for the government to implement coercive hormone therapy in certain situations. So now that it's OK in certain situations... Which situations? Where do you draw the line?

Repeat criminal offenders. Convicted criminals only and with the repeat being that they are most certainly guilty.

Another thought: Where does this fall on the spectrum of fair and cruel/unusual punishment? They are altering this person's hormone balance, which controls all sorts of functions unrelated to sexual urges. I imagine that some people might even have medically adverse reactions to something like this. At the very least, this punishment is not traditional. Or is this seen as a preventative measure? And if so, what do we conclude if this person actually rapes again despite this therapy?

I think its humane honestly compared to lets say putting a prisoner into prisoner where the chances of him being raped, beaten and becoming a better criminal are high. It is also more humane when that person is released, eventually leaves the safe house and moves several times to a new town where he relatively unknown and eventually abuses again. Taking in the humanity of future victims to prevent crimes its more humane to nullify a persons libido than to risk the rights of others.

In that sense also remember when you become a criminal you have less rights than regular citizens. You give up many of those rights when you break the social contract for you own gain whatever they may be.

This person is clearly disturbed and/or not able to function properly and safely in society and something has to be done about that for the sake of others, but they're still a human being and it always pushes my buttons when people use sexual crime as a reason to drop the humanity and demand blood without forethought.

I think being a pedophile isn't a choice. Its taboo to talk about but its equivalent of being gay or any sort of sexual orientation. A pedophile even if he gets help is still and always will be a pedophile. Not in the sense of "evil will always be evil" like a cop will tell you but more in the sense of how nature and evolution works.

To that end there is no simple solution to this problem like: legalize pedophilia marriage. No matter what a pedophile does, even if he controls his urges through lets say child porn, even fictional, he is still outside the law in the eyes of society.

Chemical castration isn't a easy choice but I think its a good one considering the alternatives society and pedophiles suggest.

To expound on Asoiaf, george makes it a point to tell you this sort of amazing history as the book goes along but not the essential details that matter. Rather the important points in history are left as question marks that he may or may not answer but really its kinda of like any history where you only have the romantic details when the reality is just utter violence.

Take america for example. If go by a simple history book or what you remembered you were taught in highschool, its a patriotic remembering almost romantic remembering of our brave forefathers taking the moral high ground and democracy winning the day because they were so brave and right. There are few little black marks like slavery and Indians but thats not really big deal and they are so regretful.

However if you read fucking Howard Zinn he paints a more realistic picture of willing genocide galore, the french winning the Revolutionary war for rather clever slave-bearing forefathers, and an ambivalent Lincoln only freeing the slaves to piss off the south into war. There are races that were wiped out entirely in the the pre-america dawn to make room for the Europeans. When the french had its revolution America turned his fucking back on them for fear of the British. And something more important that nearly half of Americans were for the British for the revolutionary war but instead of fighting stayed in their homes because they red coats were going to take care of it. They did switch sides quickly after the winner was announced however.

Many historians tend to paint a romantic and rosy picture of history which almost never the case espeically in Asoiaf as the characters are living it.

That would be pretty fucking rad actually. Though that sort of organization is basically instanced pvp really. Not to say you can expand on the concept of instanced pvp and make it larger and more luxurious than its current conceptions but instanced pvp is boring because its somewhat predictable in its small scale. What appeals to me about RvR in general is a certain dynamism of unpredictability that pops up when a couple hundred solders are running around siegeing forts and trying to kill each other.

But yeah I hope the mechwarrior mmo is like that. It would be awesome if me and my friends could be guns for hire for the highest bidding guild. In fact a mercenary system would be pretty awesome for any sort of mmo.

You are right, its only political playing cards at this point for things that don't really matter but still some people care about. Like in 20 years you are going to see Afghanistan apologizing for 9/11 not because they are sincerely sorry for it but its free political tokens they can get from america. Even though in the end Afghanistan has nothing to do with 9/11 in the first place or 9/11 even matters anymore.

Its funny you should mention Germany they only finally paid off the reparations from both ww2 recently. You are also right about Israel: Whenever they are opposed on something or accused of something they will pull the holocaust card and a lot of countries will back off. Certainly the holocaust was a terrible thing but so was the Civil war. I don't blame the south for killing thousands of northerners nor do I blame Canada for burning down the White House. I don't expect apologies from them either because it simply wouldn't hold any weight at this point as it really holds no sway in current politics at this point.

Yet Israel demands an apology and calls anyone anti-Semitic who doesn't concede. China demands apologies from Japan primarily only to bring up the fact perhaps that they did those atrocities to china.

Short story even shorter, you are right.

I should amend my statement to add you probably won't even need upgrades most of the time. They are nice but aren't needed.

Warhammer Online suffered from fort trading and the very typical sort of rolling you get when one side out number other. Its not very tactical more like whoever has the more numbers win. If there were tactics it was meta gaming by elite guilds waking up in the am hours of a Wednesday night to make a push for the capital. Not very fun. I did like WaR a whole ton but you are right Mythic fucked things up.

The key to make open world combat fun is either small numbers for a real sort of chaotic experience or having three sides so that if one side is winning the other two sides can team up on that one side and balance it out. Daoc did this except there was number imbalances simply in the realms themselves. GW2 hopes to fix this by making a maximum amount of players in one of the WvWvW zones at any time so in theory there is no imbalance in numbers.

Honestly you shouldn't be buying any weapons whatsoever until hell unless they are really cheap or your slot is very old. You are going to come across upgrades so fast that even buying shit of the AH is not worth it.

Also the market being better and cheaper than what you can craft on your own? Welcome to capitalism.

Ideally the strategy for using crafting is to sell off the armor that does not fit your stats on the market and keep the one you can use. But again remember upgrades are definitely not that important leveling up.

My old dogs before they died last year used to do this as well. They would just lie on the summer grass, too tired to move another another bone in their body from even a small walk. I used to sit with them there for hours on end, petting their sage backs, as we watch the wind gently brush against the trees,

How do I write about a city I've never even seen? by grahamedali13in writing

[–]Kardlonoc 3 points4 points ago

Visiting it is probably the best. Barring that read at least three books that are set in that city, misremember them and then combine those descriptions with your own flair.

But having visited several cities and towns and suburbs in america the core essence of theses places are typically the same. There are small differences sure but you will find one skyscraper metropolis isn't that much different from another. As such if you use the most bare essentials you can nail it and just pretend the city you are living in is that city in the describing portion.

What you will realize is that many people haven't ever visited that city either so they don't know and people living in that city will only scoff if you try and make something up in their city that does not exist. Otherwise they won't even know the difference.

Is too much world building a bad thing? by sixsnsevensin writing

[–]Kardlonoc 7 points8 points ago

No, there isn't. People love subtle refrences things to things they know nothing about. Its kinda like a mystery they need to figure out, one of the appeals of reading books is that each book answers part of that mystery but at the same time gives more questions.

To that end you can never ever really have enough world building. But remember you need to keep things subtle, unless your characters are historians or have lived through history it will mean little to them.

Indeed me as well. While I don't think a people are blameless for their actions ask yourself what can you really do in the face of men committing crimes against his fellow men. Not only that, our definition of what is "evil" is changes to a governments conveniences. Such as concentration camps are certainly evil but internment camps are necessary for fighting terrorism? The rules of war are made in such a way that it benefits greatly the one who makes them like, no easily made gas weapons while bombers and drones are a-okay and must wear a "uniform" to get rights of a solider.
