Is raw sugar actually good for ants or do they just like it? by -misusedmemes-in askscience

Just to clarify a bit more about why white bread is bad for ducks - it fills them up and does not provide them with all the nutrients they need. It's a bit like junk food for them. Ducks accustomed to being fed bread can be too lazy to seek out their own food and lack of variety can cause malnutrition (and ironically obesity). http://www.duckrescuenetwork.org/duck_care.html

As a guy in my mid 20's by LotsOfButtonsin AdviceAnimals

[–]Krabberfrabber 1 point2 points ago

33 year old here, not sure why there is so much pessimism around this thread. I agree wholeheartedly with guspvb.

10 years ago I was pretty much like the OP, confused and adrift. Now I'm running my own small business, hoping to grow it larger. You don't need to be rich to start your own thing. Sure money would have helped, but my family were dirt poor when they started out so it's not like I've had opportunities handed to me on a silver platter. You have to go out and make your own opportunities, waiting about for "a big break" makes as much sense as waiting about for that big lottery win. I've done my share of battling with depression, but now I know depression is something I have to deal with forever and I refuse to let it rule my life. There will always be hard patches, but that's the nature of the beast.

Find something that gives you drive, then find a way for that to improve your life or at least make you some cash. Conquer your fear of treading the unknown, and don't allow your lack of education or low socio-economic status to hamstring you.

The most successful guy I know is 30 this year, didn't finish high school, came from working class family and runs several of his own businesses now. However he does have drive, ambition and a complete refusal to let setbacks discourage him. His first business failed spectacularly after it turned out his business partner owed cash to the underworld. The heavies turned up, told him that they were clearing the place out, and took everything.

Instead of letting that incident scare him away from running businesses forever, he got back up and started from 0 again.

Ignore the naysayers, get up and do what you want to do. Don't talk yourself into inaction, or you'll set yourself up to fail before you begin.

White girl who fronts Japanese rock band is actually a Swedish boy by Fizzsterin Music

From the aesthetic angle, cultural differences will determine what is suitable for commercial consumption.

In the USA it seems that there is a large focus on obtaining straight, white teeth. In the UK getting your teeth bleached is something that might signal excessive vanity and the recipient may be mercilessly teased. Having said that it seems the practise is slowly gaining acceptance.

In Japan, things are somewhat more... different. I doubt that in the west we'd consider "snaggleteeth" remotely cute, but in Japan it can be a desirable feature: Yaeba From this viewpoint I suspect having slightly yellow teeth (ie. unbleached) doesn't even register as being a problem. Heck, I'm not in Japan and I certainly don't find his tooth colour to detract from from his appearance in any way.

Tooth colour tends to be a shade of yellow, we've been conditioned by TV and magazines to want bleached whites. I've had scores of patients demand an unnatural shade of white for their dentures or veneers, even if it clashes with their actual tooth colour.

Sure, you might have whiter teeth but that might have been some biological good luck on your part and not necessarily indicative of how someone with off-white teeth treats their dentition.

The colour seems relatively uniform to me in YOHIO's photo, and does not appear to be surface staining.

Edit: Here is a composite ("white filling") shade guide , although it is not comprehensive, it demonstrates the wide range of naturally occurring colours.

It's a bit haphazard here. Most houses don't bother with gates but suddenly you might get a row of houses with gates or have a few interspersed amongst ungated homes. Aussies are too busy fending off giant spiders to care about things like gate consistency.

You're a doctor, in a position of power. Generally patients are dicks to your support staff and not you. Just saying. I've only ever had one patient make a deal about ethnicity. She asked the (blonde, Anglo) receptionist if we had any white dentists in the surgery. This angered the receptionist so much the patient backed down.

However I'd agree with you that racism has gone down a bit in last few decades. (Personal, anecdotal account obviously.)

When I was a kid I remember quite a few shopkeepers would come out and stare at my family when we looking at their produce/products, as if we would suddenly grab things and run off without paying. That doesn't happen any more. (OK, once about 6 years ago but the shop owner was ancient.)

I've gotten a few dirty looks from time to time, and maybe some stupid comments, and one guy literally refused to give me the time of day for having the wrong skin colour. I don't know if it's my imagination or not but it feels like there's been a bit more resentment towards non-Anglos ever since the "boat people" issue was revisited.

TL;DR: Racism in Australia exists, but is now generally not a huge issue day to day unless you're unlucky.

I was astounded by the number of ferraris and porches and the like I saw when I went on holiday to Singapore. I can't even imagine how much a car like that would cost there.

However, if Perth Arena is anything to go by, we'll probably just end up with oversized haphazardly coloured tin sheds serving as high rises.

Get out the throw-aways: dear parents of disabled children, do you regret having your child(ren) or are you happier with them in your life? by justquitecuriousin AskReddit

I don't think testing is all that great where they live. However in my interactions with her I can't find anything to indicate that she isn't anything but neurotypical. She's very social and is currently working as a teacher. If she is hiding it, she deserves several Oscars.

My aunt has 3 kids. The eldest is autistic, can use a few words, the middle child is a completely normal bright spark and excelled at school, topping almost all her classes. The youngest child is autistic, non-verbal and legally blind.

It's hard for everyone involved. There are no real support services in the country they live in. The parents are in their late 50's and almost every waking hour is spent caring for the two disabled kids. I know my aunt loves all her kids but there is no denying the fact that life is much much harder because of the kid's disabilities. Luckily for them they can hire maids to assist them (cheap there, not a status symbol), but several maids have left because they can't deal with a screaming violent barely verbal 20-something year old man.

Life for the neurotypical middle child isn't easy either. She doesn't have much of a social life since she feels obligated to help out and prospective partners have pretty much bolted out the front door when they've seen her siblings.

The parents are extremely worried about what will happen to their kids once they are too old and infirm to care for them. It's unfair to expect the middle kid to look after the other 2 for the rest of her life, but without her care they frankly won't be able to survive.

Sorry if I'm scaring you. If it makes you feel any better I think this is a common fear. I know I was pretty much crapping myself for 9 months, worrying about almost everything that might go wrong. Thankfully I was proven wrong and everything has so far turned out OK.

Nice? I actually prefer the hard plastic seats. I'd like an uncomfortable non-infested seat like this rather than a plush seat stained with the pee, seat and vomit of last night's passengers.

Having said that, most of the seats I've come across here have been fine.

I hate Fatsia japonica plants with a passion. As soon as they flower, hordes of green blowflies swarm in from bloody everywhere and the plant becomes one buzzing swarming ball of flies. Ugh.

I ended up chopping up the one the last owner of the house planted and digging all its roots up. Murder has never felt so good.
