Colin Powell (R) tells CNN he supports legalizing same-sex marriage by EthicalReasoningin politics

[–]LettersFromTheSky 3 points4 points ago

To be fair, Powell basically got pushed out of the administration for opposing some of Bush/Cheney policies and Powell didn't like how the administration used him as a scapegoat.

Powell has more honor and integrity than Bush or Cheney ever will have.

Even though I agree with your comment overall. You may have better luck being more civil and saying:

Our constitution does not state that we, the American People, need our government's permission to protest or peacefully assemble.

Permits and fee's to protest/assemble are unconstitutional and should be banned.

That sounds like a better solution.

Stop getting statistics from reddit; "We" did not kill a tenth that amount of Iraqis. Iraqis killed the majority of Iraqis in Iraq.

Actually it's not: Iraq Body Count.org

We are a global superpower. While I believe the Iraq war and the continued presence in Afghanistan were both terrible ideas, they did not cause the world to hate us. Before 2003, there were the 9/11 attacks, the uss cole attack, numerous American embassy bombings, a previous attempt to level the WTC, etc.

You do realize that our interventionist foreign policy goes all they back to 1953 correct?

and many other places where we helped victims of natural disasters.

Helping countries and people victims of natural disasters is entirely different than invading countries, waging war and destroying governments.

How to Reduce Our Budget Deficit by $258.59 Billion Per Year Without Touching Military, Social Security, Medicare or Raising Income Taxes

By ending or eliminating Corporate Welfare. No matter what political ideology you have - ending corporate welfare should be something that should have huge popular support.

  • Republicans/conservatives should support ending corporate welfare because corporate welfare is anti free markets and capitalism.

  • Democrats/Liberals should support ending corporate welfare because it's using taxpayer money to subsidize for-profit corporations rather then being used to help people in need.

The Corporate Welfare State: How the Federal Government Subsidizes U.S. Businesses - Keep in mind this report is from the CATO Institute which is a Conservative/Libertarian Think Tank. I myself being a Liberal agree that Corporate Welfare is costing us as taxpayers billions of dollars a year and it should end.

I'm not going to deny that I have directly and indirectly benefited from the Corporate Welfare that exists - but I support ending it because it's the right thing to do!!!!! Giving taxpayer money to a for-profit corporation is morally wrong and ethically corrupt. I would fully support a Constitutional Amendment that stated the following:

"Any and all corporate welfare via Subsides, Tax Credits, Deductions and Bailouts via Federal tax-dollars are hereby prevented. To further clarify - No corporation, stock holder, investors, subsidiary, or a corporate owned non profit organization shall receive taxpayer dollars".

Proposals (these proposals don't eliminate all the Corporate Welfare but it's a start)

  • End Deferral of Taxes on Income of U.S.-Controlled Corporations Abroad: 2012-2015 savings: $199 billion (Citizen for Tax Justice estimate). Encourages off-shoring of work and capital.

  • End Accelerated Depreciation on Equipment: 2012-2015 savings: $141 billion (CTJ estimate). Accelerated depreciation can result in a very low, or even negative, tax rate on profits from a particular investment.

  • End Last-In, First-Out Accounting (LIFO)2012-2015 savings: $24.2 billion (CTJ estimate). Corporations use LIFO to hide their true profits.

  • Cut Subsidies to Big Agribusiness: Savings $52 billion (Taxpayers for Common Sense). Small farms are disappearing while big agri-business racks up huge profits—with corporate welfare support.

  • Permit Government to Negotiate Drug Prices for Medicare: Savings 2012-2021: $157.9 billion (Congressional Progressive Caucus). This will save taxpayers money.

  • End Tax Breaks For Drug Companies. 2012-2020 savings: $50 billion (estimated based on figures from Rep. Jerold Nadler). Stops a $5 billion-a year annual tax break for direct-to-consumer advertising. We should pay for drug companies to market to us?

  • Enact A Financial Crisis Responsibility Fee. 2012-2021 Revenues: $70.9 billion (Congressional Progressive Caucus). Imposed on largest banks as a repayment of corporate welfare extended via bank bailouts for financial crisis precipitated by banks.

  • Enact a Derivatives and Speculation Tax. 2012-2022 Revenues: $650 billion (Congressional Progressive Caucus). Wall Street receives indirect corporate welfare/subsidies via a regulatory system and infrastructure investment for which it pays virtually nothing. A very tiny transactions tax will end the corporate welfare.

I support free markets, that is why I oppose corporate welfare such as subsidies, bailouts, tax credits, and deductions. If you have a business and it relies on these things to stay in existence - it's probably time to look at a new and better business model. Because if I had my way - all those things would come to an abrupt end.

TL;DR - Subsidies, tax credits, deductions and bailouts are not free market - it's corporatism and it's costing us as taxpayers BILLIONS of dollars. Want to balance our budget - let's end corporate welfare.

Considering that we spent $80billion over the 30 years Mubarak was in power to support his regime, I doubt our government wanted him overthrown. We should have never given money to Mubarak in the first place and is a prime example of how our interventionist foreign policy creates more problems. I don't like that my tax dollars goes to support foreign regimes no matter how much they are our "ally".

Republicans are once again threatening to shut down the government over the debt ceiling. A move which could lead to another credit downgrade for the US. by cookupastormin politics

[–]LettersFromTheSky 3 points4 points ago

From what I understand: All Obama needs to do is veto any budget passed by Congress and the sequester goes into effect. Given that Congress is highly divided on budget issues, I doubt they'll have the votes in both houses to override a veto.

So as long as Obama sticks to his guns on balancing the budget (ie raising taxes and cutting spending like the sequester does) he shouldn't have any problem.

How do you know the Republican Party is full of shit when they talk about "balancing the budget"? When Paul Ryan says: "a stopgap agreement to fend off tax increases and severe spending cuts, but not a grand bargain that will fix everything once and for all.” Article

Republicans in the US House passed a stopgap agreement bill that REDUCES spending cuts (increases spending) while CUTTING taxes. Am I the only one who thinks this bill by Paul Ryan is ass backwards? If Republicans were truly concerned about balancing the budget, they'd let the Bush tax cuts expire and let the spending cuts go into effect like the sequester does (which by the way they agreed to that sequester in the summer of 2011). So this bill they passed in the US House is the GOP reneging it's promise to balance the budget. Let's not forget that they passed a bill that prevents military cuts at the expense of working Americans.

Yep, I'm so glad we have that "fiscal conservatism". /sarcasm.

Our government's actions overseas disgust me.

We've killed 100,000 Iraqi civilians, Iraq almost had a civil war and all for what?

We need to adopt a non interventionist foreign policy, reduce our bases overseas and stop killing people. Our current foreign policy is not one that creates friends or peace and while our government talks about democracy, freedom and human rights - their actions are very contrary!

Nurse refuses student inhaler during asthma attack (teenager's mother finds him locked inside the nurse's office, unconscious on the floor.) by Sugar_Skullin politics

My mom is a nurse and has been for 35+ years. I'm pretty sure if she saw someone having trouble breathing the last thing on her mind would be "school procedure" or if the student has the proper forms.

This nurse needs to have her license suspended or revoked - especially since she locked him in a room and failed to call 911. Or is that in the school procedures too? A nurses responsibility is to her patients, not her employer.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 18 points19 points ago

Here's a better argument: The Debt Limit is unconstitutional

Here is why I think the Debt Limit is unconstitutional.

14th Amendment, Section 4 states: "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned..."

Article 1, Section 8 states: "To borrow money on the credit of the United States;"

No where does it say in our constitution that we have to have a debt limit. In fact, it explicit states that we can not default on our debt. A debt limit violates that principle because the limit will eventually force the US to default on it's debt.

All we need to do is look at court case McCulloch vs Maryland (1819)

In that case, the Court invoked the Necessary and Proper Clause of the Constitution, which allowed the Federal government to pass laws not expressly provided for in the Constitution's list of express powers, provided those laws are in useful furtherance of the express powers of Congress under the Constitution.

This fundamental case established the following two principles:

  • The Constitution grants to Congress implied powers for implementing the Constitution's express powers, in order to create a functional national government.
  • State action may not impede valid constitutional exercises of power by the Federal government.

As a result, because the Republican controlled House passed a budget that Obama signed into law with a deficit. The authority of the spending bill should have implicit power to raise the debt ceiling regardless. The budget signed into law gives the treasury a implicit legality to borrow, and the debt limit directly conflicts with this. At the very least, there is precedence for the Supreme Court to rule that a implied power given by the constitution can be used to create a functional government. In 1917, Congress passed the Debt ceiling law that has created a dysfunctional government when it comes to deciding the budget!!! (Does anyone honestly think our congress today is functional??). As such, a default would create a dysfunctional government since the government would not be able to meet its obligation's as mandated by Congress's budget signed into law.

Interesting tidbit: this country had more budget surpluses with out a debt limit. This country did just fine without a debt limit and I'd argue that the debt limit is almost an excuse for our government to borrow more and more. It has not done it's job of "controlling debt" like it was intended for.

The only thing a debt limit does is allow our Congress to vote twice on how much they want to spend and borrow. So the debt limit is unconstitutional because it will force the US to default on it's debt due to the fact it's subject to partisan bickering and the whim of whatever political parties are in control.

Article/Document:

Beyond Balanced Budgets, Fourteenth Amendment Style

To quote from the article:

"Regardless of which governmental obligations would be unconstitutional to repudiate, the federal debt-limit statute makes train wrecks and thus repudiation possible. Although the debt-limit statute is theoretically written in pursuance of goals that the hypothetical Fiscal Commitments Amendment also seeks to attain, it works counter to the Amendment's goal of ensuring the validity of bond debt. The statute precludes government borrowing above a level that Congress has set, even if that borrowing is needed to meet expenses required to honor existing debts. Whether the statute in fact increases or decreases the probability of default or investor confidence is impossible to determine a priori. Under the objective and subjective tests for debt repudiation discussed above, however, it is not necessary to weigh these effects speculatively, and the statute flunks at least the objective test and possibly the subjective test also"
