Everyone needs to chill out and get their facts straight.

First of all, this only affects three southern border provinces, NOT AMSTERDAM, at least for the remainder of 2012.

Second, this is not new news, it passed over a year ago and has slowly been implemented (it was supposed to go into effect January 1, 2012) and has been challenged in local courts. There has been a ton of media coverage (at least within the marijuana media), as well as nation-wide protests by coffee shop owners and supporters on 4/20. Put down the bong and pick up a paper guys, and you won't be so shocked. Its overreactions like this that give stoners a bad rep.

Third, although the conservative Dutch government wants to implement it nation wide (including Amsterdam) next year, that is highly unlikely to happen. Amsterdam receives a ton of tourist dollars because of cannabis tourism, and even the conservatives will not turn down all of the revenue that tolerated cannabis has allowed.

Finally, just like in the United States, the government officials are elected. The Dutch Weedpass has so much resistance within the citizens of The Netherlands, it is very likely that if the conservative government somehow is successful in implementing the ban nationwide, it will only last until the conservatives are voted out of office.

So fear not, happy tokers, you can still visit Amsterdam's coffee shops, at least this year.

Yes and no. Marijuana has been decriminalized in New York state since the 70's, but only if it is not in public view (in your pocket). If it is out in the open, police can still arrest you.

NYPD has come under fire in recent years for their "Stop and Frisk" procedures, where they stop someone (usually a minority) and pat them down. They'll say something like "do you have any weed on you? Give it up and you won't go to jail."

The problem is, as long as it is in your pocket, you're fine. But the second you take it out of your pocket to show the cop, it is now in "public view" and they can arrest you.

Hence, New York city's reputation as the Pot Bust Capital of the World.

This headline is SO misleading.

There was no vote, it was a hearing about a medical marijuana bill that will be placed on the November ballot. By law, all bills that are certified to appear on the ballot are entitled to a public hearing. It is unlikely the legislature will act on the initiative, as 3 other medical marijuana bills have already died in committee this year.

Oaksterdam isn't closing. They've already re-opened since Monday's raids. Richard Lee (founder) will give up ownership, but Oaksterdam will remain.
