Hey Boston and Berkshire Cyclists. Can I take a bike on Amtrak from Boston to Pittsfield? by Aplodontiain bicycling

[–]SonicSemae 0 points1 point ago

My experience with Amtrak is no, there is no place to store it and they won't let you bring it on. However, I would call them and ask. Perhaps if you bought two seats and kept it in your aisle? But that would be expensive and might uncomfortable for a journey of 2+ hours.

Source: I live in Boston and take the Acela/Northeast Regional frequently.

Well, I knew I forgot something. Sorry! Medium for medium.

I have a 2012 Medium Sport Cut jersey that I'd be interested in trading for a 2012 Medium Race Cut jersey.

Well... I have this year's sport cut and I would love to exchange it for a race cut... PM me if you're interested. I know it's not your first priority, either, so I would not be averse to adding in a little something extra to make it worth your while.

Is the Race Cut slimmer? Because I got a medium sport cut and it's way too loose around the waist.

Haha, well, I appreciate the thought. I'll just grab a beer out of the fridge and take some time off studying, and that's a present enough.

Friending someone on Reddit will highlight their name in orange if they posted in a thread you're reading. Or, at least it does on RES. I forget if it does or not without it...

PS, I haven't seen most of those gifs before. Good shit.

First, read this. I wish more people were like that.

Cake day is your yearly anniversary for joining Reddit. Some time ago people just upvoted the shit out of anyone who's "cake day" it was, then people started using this to cash in on Karma. Cake day doesn't seem to mean as much as it used to when I first started lurking, but it's still a pretty special occasion.

Decidedly master.

Probably my best picture with a bow. Is my form any good? by Murkliin Archery

[–]SonicSemae 12 points13 points ago

Haha, well, that's certainly one of the more interesting shots I've ever seen. The three best angles to take pictures from while shooting are looking at the back, looking at the front, and looking from behind the draw-arm towards the target. This gives us a good idea of alignment. That being said, here's what I can glean from this photo:

For starters, you should open both eyes. However, if you see double with both eyes open then it is okay to close one eye. If you're using a sight, you should be using Olympic anchor. If you were my student, I'd tell you to either ditch the sight or learn the new anchor point. If you want to keep your current anchor, it should be closer in to your face with your index finger touching the corner of your mouth. Many traditional shooters have varying opinions on this, but that's the most common form that I see and work with. It's clear that you are not properly using your back muscles. You're doing what I like to call the "chicken wing", which is pulling mostly with your arm. This means that your elbow on your right arm is not in line with your bow hand or shoulders. You want to think of your elbow coming back behind your ear while you're anchoring and releasing.

You're form is pretty good on the whole. If you just change a few things, you'll notice a drastic improvement.

It's an old picture (I think two years ago or so?). I wanted to save it for my cake day as it seemed appropriate. But it's a pretty over-used meme, so I understand people's initial urge to just downvote anything that might possibly attract a horde of people screaming "the cake is a lie!"

Reddit 2012 Race cut Size M, might as well post mine now. by jdbray83in bicycling

Just got mine today. Fits perfectly in the shoulders and lengthwise, but there is SO much extra material around the midsection. I have a medium, but I'm wishing I had gotten a small.

Yah, I'm pretty nervous about actually trying this summer. Up until recently I've been a really casual rider, but I suppose there's no better way than to just jump in (as verified by the wonderful people on this thread).

Road bike routine maintenance? by Perpetuumin bicycling

I like to use T9 Boeshield (I prefer the aerosol variety myself), but it's all personal preference. Just go to your LBS and see what they recommend. Or try different varieties and see what you like.

You should be lubing the chain before every ride. I also like to lube major drive train components (front/rear derailleur mainly) on a less frequent basis. Other than that, keep an eye out for wear on the front chain rings, sprockets, rear derailleur, or chain. While you're riding the bike, be aware of any new noises that the bike makes or new behaviors the bike develops (e.g. if there is play in your headset, if the chain skips, etc).

At the beginning and end of the riding season I like to retune the derailleur to make sure it's spot on and shifting as crisp as possible. If you don't want to do this yourself, your local bike shop can do a tune-up for about $50.

Number one rule, though: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It's really easy to muck up a properly tuned bicycle just because you think something is slightly off. Oh, and check out the guys over at /r/bikewrench. They're very helpful.

I ride in small groups quite frequently (2-3 people), and I'd say I have pretty good etiquette, but I've never been in a large pack. Is the difference that big?

Unfortunately my college's cycling club is composed of hippies on frankenbikes (most of which I helped build) who get winded if we do anything over 12 mph. One of my professors is actually a fairly avid racer so I might ask him if there are any good rides around here.

You need a season to race & get dropped to prepare yourself. You can't really train for racing without ever having raced.

I think that's the best advice I could get at this point.

I saw that, actually, and I was thinking about showing up to see what it was all about. My experience with group rides around Boston has been that they're fairly flakey.
