The Empire Strikes Back - Filming of the Opening Crawl by GashcatUnpunishedin movies

[–]SpookyRockjaw 0 points1 point ago

The first Star Wars was released in 1977 as just Star Wars but before the second film came out Lucas changed the crawl of the original film to read Episode IV. That was the first change made to any of the films post-release. Then Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980 with the Episode V title and Return of the Jedi was released as Episode VI in 1983.

No, the original Star Wars trilogy was known for revolutionary special effects. There is actually only one CGI effect in the whole first film which is the death star holgram in the briefing scene and this shot was farmed out to a university mainframe computer and took weeks to create.

The rest of computer displays are hand animated. All of the space battle stuff is shot with computer programmed motion control cameras which could reproduce exact camera movements. This allowed them to shoot many different elements, models of ships, backgrounds, etc and then put the film together in an optical compositor. Other than the programming of custom built computers that operated the camera, no computers were used to create any of the special effects.

If they had to create this opening crawl in a computer in 1977 it would be exceedingly complicated and would have taken a lot more time and money.

They used computer programmed motion control cameras which could reproduce exact movements multiple times. This means they could do multiple passes with the exact same camera move and then optically composite different film elements together. This is how the majority of special effects in the original trilogy were done.

Since they shot all the special effects with motion control cameras they were just being consistent and using the equipment that they had built. To create this effect they just needed to put the stationary text over a backlit screen and move the camera across it. Simple. To somehow make the text itself scroll they would have to build a contraption to roll the sheet of text, somehow make that movement perfectly smooth and then figure out how to backlight the moving text.

I'm pretty sure most people who say this know the difference and don't believe that they are actually OCD. I could be wrong.

Retail workers know what I mean by psychotronofdethin funny

[–]SpookyRockjaw 0 points1 point ago*

I wasn't trying to say this is how all stores are. The OP image just gave me a huge grin because I deal with this misconception on a daily basis. Just adding my own experience to the mix.

Also I work on the grocery team. Not dairy, not produce. We handle the largest volume of product in the store and all of it is prepackaged and has a shelf life of AT THE VERY LEAST six months to over a year.

I work at Whole Foods on the grocery team. Our store does the most business of all the stores in the south region and our "stockroom" is barely more than a hallway with some shelves in it. We get trucks five days a weeks and work all the product to the floor the same day it arrives while our buyers place the order for the next day's truck. We order what goes on the shelf so the only thing in the back is odds and ends backstock and leftover display items. It's a total joke when people walk up to me and ask me to get three cases of a particular item in the back. It happens all the time and I kindly point them to what we have on the shelf and let them know they can place a special order at the front desk.

Every time someone pulls a gun out in a movie I groan. What other common movie/tv occurrences drive you crazy? by CherrySlurpeein AskReddit

[–]SpookyRockjaw 10 points11 points ago

I read that the sideways gun style originally came from militia groups who would fire submachine guns sideways into large groups of people so that the recoil would send bullets in a random horrizontal arc. Ergo the sideways gun technique exists precisely to increase the death of innocent bystanders.

Glass half empty. by NightGolferin funny

[–]SpookyRockjaw 0 points1 point ago

It means that you're not completely retarded. Anyone with a head on their shoulders sees it as both. THATS the point of the theoretical debate of glass half full/empty. Not to determine if you are an optimist or a pessimist because of how you would view a glass of water. It's a rhetorical idiom meant to illustrate that perception is simply an individual's interpretation of reality. A situation may be seen differently depending on one's point of view. There is no glass of water. Forget it. It's not meant to be a test. It's an example. That both statements are true is considered a given. Anyone legitimately debating if the glass is half full or half empty is missing the point.

Glass half empty. by NightGolferin funny

[–]SpookyRockjaw 0 points1 point ago

There are two halves of the glass, therefore it's half empty and half full.

That's the entire effing point. I hope you're trolling.

Canonically they are two entirely separate film series. Batman Begins is not a prequel to the Burton/Schumacher movies. It is the first film in a completely different chronology.

I made you a short medley. Turn up the volume and let your imagination roam free.
