nVidia overheating by getlaidanddiein hardware

I had an Aerocool case that was "left-walled." If you put a standard ATX board in a case like that, it has to be in there upside down... relatively speaking (card slots at the top, CPU at the bottom). Add to that the PSU was bottom mounted, it looked like my whole PC was upside down from the back!

How neat is that!

Planting seeds sounds fun and all, but it's far more persuasive to tell them they will go to hell if they don't believe in science.

I really liked this post, and totally understand the point, however, can I ask for some context? I know who Ray Comfort is, but is the text addressing something he specifically said, or just his track record? I scanned through the comments and didn't see any sources or direction. I would really like to appreciate this post more. Thanks in advance.

The idea of a police force more thoroughly and effectively maintains order than a police force as an entity. by Iliketuwtlesin StonerPhilosophy

[–]SumErgoCogito 5 points6 points ago

Oh my GOD. This is one of the most interesting subjects to me. I've read a book by Michel Foucault (Discipline and Punish:The Birth of the Prison), which describes crime and punishment as moving from a very public and grotesque play into a concealed and "gentler" way of punishment. Basically, what was once done to the body, is now done to the mind.

Think about it. We have the same punishment for EVERY crime one might commit. Jail. You rob a bank? You go to jail. You punch someone in the face? You go to jail. We've lost the connection between the crime and punishment. We've also lost the deterrent effect of seeing somebody hung, drawn and quartered, for instance.

We went from dungeons to prisons. Dungeons saw prisoners in darkness concealed from the world and from one another. It was more like isolation. Now we have prisons designed so that prisoners can be seen very easily by the prison staff. Their mug shots are displayed online as well. However the punishment itself is now done inside the prison as the prison, as apposed to in the public arena with bodily harm.

We've also built a Panopticon, like Necroyeti mentioned. Bentham saw it as a physical building, where the shape of the building made it possible for one guard to see what any one prisoner was doing at any moments notice... But not only that. He theorized that the central guard tower would have special blinds that allowed the guard to see out, but prevent the prisoners from seeing in. This way, the prisoner never knew when he was being watched. They wouldn't even need ONE guard to watch over hundreds of prisoner.

We have taken this concept and put it everywhere. CCTV is essentially a Panopticon. There may or may not be a guard/police officer watching the screen at the very moment you commit the crime, or he may or may not rewind and watch it later. We live IN the Panopticon. That is our deterrent from committing crime, and we essentially police ourselves.

I highly suggest you read this book if you have any interest this. The first few pages are pretty hard to get through, as he goes into intense detail about somebody being killed in public for a crime he committed.

So, would it be irony if a person had a fear of airplanes and decided to drive across the country instead, only to be killed by an airplane that crashed into the freeway they were driving on?

Or, is that just bad luck?

I feel like I can relate to a lot of the things they sing about. It's an album full of universal coming of age feelings/stories.

It makes me feel nostalgic for a time that I can't really pinpoint, but feel I have experienced throughout my life.

Ok, but perhaps social change is hindered because we often confuse arbitrary choices with the ones that really matter. Coke or Pepsi is not the kind of choice to stir social change, however choosing the kind of societal structure that best reflects the human characteristics of "rational and free" is an important choice, and the sort of choice we ought to be concerned about.

I've had a similar experience, except I usually think, "That guy could swerve his car SO easily into my lane and collide head-on." It'll make you scared to drive for about a week, then you'll forget.

Remember, anyone can swerve into your lane and kill you at any time!
