By studying 30mins a day for 600days, I mastered the Japanese writing system by nihon_trollin GetMotivated

[–]VIJoe 38 points39 points ago

I have a story about studying Kanji.

End of Happy Hour and there are three of us left, me, my buddy, and this attractive but annoying young woman that my friend is attempting to put the move on. The annoying thing about the young woman with us is that whatever you say, she has done something better -- one of those. Two sheets to the wind, we all decide to get something to eat and stop at a local sushi joint. The front of the house is run by this English woman and her Japanese husband does the preparation. The following takes place:

  • Annoying One: "You know, I studied Kanji for six months because I wanted a tattoo and had heard all the horror studies. So I studied the language first to make sure my tattoo was perfect." [She pulls aside her hair to show the British woman several Kanji characters going down her neck.] "You see, it says "Peace, Love and Happiness."

  • British Woman: [Looks at tattoo. Confers in Japanese with husband.] "Um, he says that it says, "Peace, Love, and Flatfish."

  • Annoying One: [Assertively] "I'm certain it says Happiness."

  • Japanese Guy: [In heavily accented English] "No Happiness. Flounder. Flatfish."

Four-fifths of us were immediately laughing our asses off.

Huh. You are correct. Apparently those dates in the google results don't mean what I think they mean. Carry on, everyone.

A google search of pre-2003 hits shows that the aggregator Quora was using the terms back then to allow users to vote content up or down.

Good work. Thanks for the afternoon shot of motivation. I love the Eric Thomas stuff. I'll have to try and find more of him.

What is the closest you've ever (knowingly) come to dying? by datreydgroupin NFLOffTopic

Hello from a former Chicagoan who now lives in the Virgin Islands. Great story. I've had a couple of close calls trying to ply big waters in little boats -- but nothing worthy of a mayday.

I forgive you for abandoning the Bears.

I will certainly accede to any real scientific knowledge. I was just going by the description in the article, which says that the drug would "prevent healthy people from being infected" with the virus. Wikipedia describes a vaccine as being either prophylactic (preventing) or therapeutic. Does this not fit into the first?

17 years in.... 1 day out....blood on fire... by RosenTurdin stopsmoking

I was a 17-year smoker, too. Since I quit in October 2010, I've had seven cigarettes. And you know what? It really hasn't been that bad. Embrace the awesomeness of you taking back your life. You can do it.

Wow. I honestly don't think I ever noticed her looks before. Gorgeous.

Quitting today, cold turkey. Wish me luck :-) by mvhoutein stopsmoking

You can do it, my friend. I went cold turkey as well, after 17 years of smoking. When you've had enough, you've had enough. Own it.

So I road-tripped to Minneapolis last weekend and that city is AWESOME. Besides your home, what is your second-favorite city? by astrobeenin NFLOffTopic

[–]VIJoe 4 points5 points ago

Great question.

I am also originally from Chicago. I will tell you that of the major cities that I've visited in the US, my favorite is Houston. I was frankly a little shocked by how much I liked it as I've always had something of a bias against the South, generally. I found it to be a very metropolitan place with great food and cultural attractions.

What are the chances that the bears draft Burfict? by phippsyin CHIBears

[–]VIJoe 2 points3 points ago

To start, I don't know anything more about the guy than his Wikipedia Page told me. I don't watch college ball and haven't seen him play. That being said, two things:

  • While Urlacher certainly isn't getting any younger, he has several years of playing time left if he stays healthy. LBs don't need the same kind of maturation process as QBs do. There is a pretty good track record of rookies performing well at LB (including Urlacher himself). LBs are plug and play.
  • I don't know the truth on his character issues but I generally agree and support the Bears' efforts to maintain a very professional atmosphere which is generally free of goofs (not that there haven't been some of those).

Nah.

Brian Dawkins Retires by oobydoobin nfl

[–]VIJoe -7 points-6 points ago

This is not a comment on the player - always saw him as a balls-out, hard-nosed playmaker - but is this really how he renounced his retirement?

...with u, the fans 4 helping make my career 1 that i have enjoyed...

Concluding his career with a tweet? How about a press release that uses words instead of numbers for words? Or maybe a nice full-page ad in the local paper? The level of informality strikes me as classless.

Coca-Cola is out for Bears games. When you want a cola, you get an RC starting in 2012. (This will negatively affect the fan experience.) by Soquidin CHIBears

I think he was lacking a little in motivation.

What does this mean? He is supposed to be motivated by things like winning games for his team and solidifying his name as a real NFL quarterback. Must we hold a gun to his mother's head?

Question about Shae. [ASOS spoilers] by Edwin_Quinein asoiaf

[–]VIJoe 5 points6 points ago

I think there is a couple of things there that are interesting:

  • She is first discovered living within Tywin's host.
  • Tywin immediately knows that Tyrion is keeping her and tells him not to bring her to Court when he goes.
  • After Tywin returns, he references Tyrion's use of prostitutes.

Nothing to tip the scales, but a good question, I think.

Seems to me if something is private, then invading that as part of the interview through requiring password access is going to open you to a world of potential hurt if you come across potentially protected stuff.

We are not talking about providing the password to receive government benefits to which you are entitled. This is a job which you are free to seek or abandon. This is consensual. If you give up your password, you are consenting to the discovery of whatever is inside, aren't you?
