Why stay with the church if that is how they feel?

Before dealing with the specifics, let’s make a general observation. It’s impossible to make the world better in some way without making the world worse in other ways. That principle is illustrated by science fiction scenarios in which a time-traveler tries to make the world a better place by changing the past. But every time he makes one thing better, he makes another thing worse. Every improvement carries a collateral downside. He can never strike a perfect balance, in which everything is better and nothing is worse.

Everyone knows that something published in a science fiction novel is irrefutable fact. I mean, it has "Science" right there in the name!

Edit: Also, do you have a response to my other two questions, those two are something I am very interested in. They are assertions I have not heard before. Also, whoever down-voted them: don't do that. They came here for a discussion, and was very civil about it. Disagreeing is not a good reason to down-vote.

Number 4 - Matthew 7: 1-5

It is not your place to judge his sin, or to hate it. Jesus commands love always, and not to judge. To hate their action is to judge them, you must forgive, and you have not truly forgiven if you still harbor hate for their actions.

Number 2: It is that easy to ignore god's plan? I can just choose to subvert the will of the all mighty? And if it is that easy than his plan has no hope of coming to fruition.

Number 1: Since when does Satan rule on Earth, and how does that jive with god's plan? Didn't he cast Satan into hell for his disobedience? Can you back that claim with scripture, because I have not heard that before.

I think that it is pretty funny that a character for a commercial who is essentially perfect has become a meme that is (more often than not) somehow socially awkward or oblivious. Basically the opposite of the original purpose.

I actually questioned a religious friend about why god would save Lot when he was clearly willing to let his daughters be raped by the whole town. My question was how is that a good man? His response was that the bible says that Lot was a righteous man. While I consider righteous to mean good, when I looked it up websters says it is "acting in accord with divine or moral law: free from guilt or sin." While I think it is clear that Lot did not follow moral law, he definitely followed divine law, and was judged to be free from sin. My friend knows that the OT is messed up, and realizes that a lot of the bible doesn't make sense, but tries to do right and believes in god. I hadn't really wanted to debate him about whether he should believe or not, or if god is truly good so the conversation ended there. Thought he had a good point about the Lot thing.

TL;DR Lot did right by god, but god's rules are pretty fucked up.

Quit paying for his shit, don't pay his credit card, and start charging him rent. Also, no reason not to hire him. It's not what you know but who you know. Just be sure that someone else at the company is his boss so he doesn't think he can slack off with no consequences.

I'm with you Wonderful on this issue. It is so easy to get to other sub-reddits, so rather than change the rules of one that is big and popular just start your own. If you don't like the content it is your responsibility to avoid the content.

I understand all your points, and in my initial reaction I thought they were wrong to kick him out. You are right that we need to do our best to be all inclusive, especially with our image problem. But the more I thought about it the more I realized that sometimes the reason people go to these groups is because it is the only place they feel they can be open about their beliefs and feelings, and if something is detracting from that than it becomes just another place that they can't be open and comfortable.

I never said you didn't read that. We know the reasons that the group asked him to leave. Of course we don't have all the details because we are not there. I also didn't attack your post in any way, but gave reasons why I thought that they might have been uncomfortable. And blog aside, if I am going to say something bad about christianity I try to avoid doing it in front of christians, because I think they are entitled to believe what they want and I don't want to be rude.

This is the only place in Central Oregon for atheists and freethinkers to meet and socialize

If that is true than there is not another group for an atheist to go to, and if having a christian there makes them uncomfortable it is not unreasonable to ask him to leave. It is not a debate club, or a "let's explain our stance to christians" club, it is a group for atheists and free thinkers to come together with other atheists and talk about atheist things.

They have asked me this over quite a long period of time, and I do not want to ignore their wishes any longer. The responsibility of the leadership of this meetup is to the members; the atheists, freethinkers, agnostics., and their needs and wishes.

They know that your primary purpose for attending is to obtain material for your blog, and to witness to us.

Not everyone in the group may want their stories shared on the internet, and not everyone will be comfortable saying what is on their mind about christianity with a christian in the room for fear of offending him or being rude. Also, though he denies it in his letter, if he was witnessing to them than he was not respecting the purpose of the group.
