This lawyer's "bad" tv ad saved a guy's life. by hova9in law

I'm taking a point off for your poor attitude.

This year for my birthday, if my friends asked me what I wanted, I said "your favorite book". Here's some of the loot. by HlynurBjornin books

[–]addicted2soysauce 2 points3 points ago

Here are the two problems I see with this approach. 1) They are recommending their favorite book, so they will be excited to know when you finish reading it to discuss it. What if they give a Nora Roberts or similarly trashy book you don't want to read, you are on the hook. 2) You are going to receive mostly popular books Unless you own very few books, and I doubt it because you subscribe to this subreddit, then you are going to get a lot of duplicates of what you already own or that someone else gave you.

Here is the problem. The actual sitting down and beginning is the part you need to break down. I sometimes use one excuse or another to just check this one thing before I start or just go grab this other thing so I have it near me or whatever. Once you start, you'll just keep going. This doesn't have to be a complicated multi step thing, just a couple steps.

For example:

Step 1, Get up and shut computer off. Step 2, go grab a drink and a snack from the kitchen, nothing that takes time to cook. Step 3, Find and grab the book you want to read. Step 4, Sit down wherever you think you might be most comfortable. Step 5, Put your ear plugs in. Step 6, Start reading the jacket and inside cover materials. Step 7, Read the first page. Step 8, doesnt matter because you are now reading, if you followed your preplanned steps sequentially without interruption.

Instead of doing a list, just break down the activity. That's what really matters anyway.

For example: to clean, I do a "five spot." I don't know why I call it that, I just do, the point is to break down cleaning any room into five activities. Throwaway trash, throw stuff that belongs in another room into that room, put away what belongs in that room, move dirty laundry to hamper, etc.

The point is, if you want to do something break down the first part into very small steps. Once you are started, ignore the test of the list. Just do enough steps to get yourself consumed by the activity and you'll complete it.

I failed every class by giamgiamin ADHD

[–]addicted2soysauce 5 points6 points ago

I got a 0.00 GPA one semester. I graduated 2001 from undergrad. Two years ago I graduated summa cum laude from a top 20 US law school.

Look, you know you're capable. Give yourself that much credit. I flunked because I doubted my ADHD and stopped taking Meds. I then started using depressants, primarily alcohol and pot, to self medicate, although I didn't understand my motivations at the time.

The difference came not with giving up the drugs but with taking possession of my life. I was expected to be a Comp Sci major by my parents and friends and I hated it. I realized that logic and math were what I was good at and switched to finance. The major isn't important, the interest in what you are doing is. I want you to stop and think, if I do my major as an occupation, if these are my daily activities, will I care or be interested? Everyone finds their job boring, which is why if you have ADHD you really need to like your job. Every day.

Do what you want and love. Even if it means dropping out and doing HVAC. As an ADHDer you are statistically prone to unemployment anyway. Do what you like and are good at, even if it's renting jet skis.

Btw, if you are good at reading and writing and really logical and smart, Litigator is an awesome ADHD job. I love being in court and fighting with opposing counsel.

Edit: Sorry if this didn't make any sense. I just wanted to share. Just pretend it made sense and don't downvoat me. I'm drunk and going to bed now.

Look up local appearance attorney firms and landlord tenant firms. They frequently have use for contract appearance work and will accept new attorneys. Unlawful detainer and default prove up hearings are great experience too. $75-100 for one appearance per day sucks, but you can work on building a solo practice in the afternoons.

As an attorney, I consider good grammar and punctuation to be one of my highest priorities. As a Redditor that likes to post comments in my downtime, I could care less about simple typos and I think it's ridiculous that you do. As long as the message is clear and precise, why would you be so obsessive about a leisure activity?

The truth about the negative Prop 29 ads by SuccessKidYeahin California

The problem I see is that smoking is more prevalent among lower socio-economic classes. This tax will disproportionately affect the lower class.

I also suspect the most zealous proponents are upper middle class and upper class citizens. These classes tend to abstain from smoking because they can gym memberships and healthy food and because of their higher sense of selfworth.

I'm not saying this tax is designed to be oppressive or to divide people by class, I'm just pointing one negative potential outcome.

Hey r/law, I checked the FAQ and couldn't really find an answer to this question: How hard is law school? by icantcontrolmyselfin law

[–]addicted2soysauce 0 points1 point ago

I waited until I was 28. It's about the right age I think because you're young enough to put up with the workload but still have a few years of work in another profession. Understanding how the world works and knowing how the business world works is a valuable skill for lawyers. Learning the law and how to write is easy. Using good judgment and making practical decisions are critical skills that can't be taught in school.

When I say "Kava tea", what I really mean is Kava-Kava plant prepared in a similar fashion to hot tea.

Kava-Kava is a widely known and widely available anti-stress herb. You can find it in some regular urban grocery stores and all herbal pharmacies and organic grocery stores.

The omega-3 supplements usually only help if you have a deficiency. I am a veg*n so I take them to be sure I am getting an adequate supply. It may be overkill in my situation though because I eat a carefully balanced diet already. I don't know what is specifically "unhealthy" about your diet but I would just suggest them if you plan to continue "unhealthy" food.

Every ADHDer has differing issues and responds differently to medicines and treatments. That's why I suggest a psychiatrist. They have a broad perspective and can recommend specific treatments tailored to your particular issues. GP's just aren't as well equipped.

Some people swear caffeine helps, but in my experience it makes things worse. I can handle a can of soda no problem, but anything more than a cup of coffee's worth causes terrible hyperactivity.

My problem with sugar is that it gives you a bit of an energy rush and then you crash an hour or so later. I have a hard enough time keeping my activity level regulated without sugar ups and downs.

I don't know what kind of "doctor" you went to but I am presuming you mean a general practitioner. Psychiatrists are responsible for diagnosing and treating ADHD. It looks like you may have some other issues tied up with your ADHD. ADHD is frequently co-morbid with OCD, anxiety, depression and other disorders. It sounds like you need to go to a psychiatrist to get this tangle of problems sorted.

Also, there is more to treating and coping with ADHD than medication. Read through the top historical posts of this subreddit and you'll start to get a feel for other types of steps you should be taking. But this assumes you actually have ADHD, go to a psychiatrist first.

Edit: I also have anxiety along with ADHD but am only medicated for ADHD. I use two bags of Yogi brand Kava tea right before major exams. It helps with the stress and doesn't make you groggy.

Edit: Dietary treatments don't work but nutritional deficiencies will exacerbate your ADHD. Make certain you get a full days value of protein, vitamins B6 and B12, and omega fatty acids. Fish is a great source of all of these, and if you are a veg*n the flax seed is what you're after.

Edit: Yes, that amount of soda is not only unhealthy for your waist line and teeth, but that amount of sugar is going to play hell on your ADHD.

Edit: I am also careful to sleep at least 7.5 hours per night because any less and my ability to concentrate sputters and fades at mid day.

Edit: It sounds like you know part of what is going wrong. Again, go to a psychiatrist to get properly diagnosed and treated.

Human beings have the capacity for understanding all of the relevant considerations and their gravity, and have the ability to end life without suffering. These animals do not have that ability to reason nor do they have the facility for killing themselves. I suppose if we could communicate with the animals and ask them their wishes, we would. But we can't, so we will just have to make the decision for them.

From PETA.org

The majority of adoptable dogs are never brought through our doors (we refer them to local adoption groups and walk-in animal shelters). Most of the animals we house, rescue, find homes for, or put out of their misery come from miserable conditions, which often lead to successful prosecution and the banning of animal abusers from ever owning or abusing animals again.

Most of the animals we took in and euthanized could hardly be called "pets," as they had spent their lives chained up in the back yard, for instance. They were unsocialized, never having been inside a building of any kind or known a pat on the head. Others were indeed someone's, but they were aged, sick, injured, dying, too aggressive to place, and the like, and PETA offered them a painless release from suffering, with no charge to their owners or custodians.

I also have experience in this area. I am a lawyer who has done pet shelter and animal rights pro bono litigation to shut down inhumane shops and kennels, both public and private, and to stop cruel practices.

The Humane Society's ideal stay length for all shelters is only 5 days.

The HSUS recommends that shelters hold stray animals for a minimum of five operating days; that period should include a Saturday to ensure that working owners will have every possible chance to claim their lost pets.

With that context, a 24 hour stay at a PETA shop specializing in unadoptable, mortally sick and traumatized pets, doesn't seem so unreasonable. LA County only keeps animals for a matter of 2-3 days tops. Most people don't realize how many stray and abused animals there are and how quickly they must be killed because of limited facilities.

[–]addicted2soysauce 5 points6 points ago

The question is not whether you would but whether you should. If an animal has a debilitating illness or defect that causes them constant and untreatable suffering, whether you are willing to adopt it or not, it should be relieved from its misery by euthanization.

These PETA people are MONSTERS! by ipargain funny

[–]addicted2soysauce 17 points18 points ago*

Where do they say that?

From PETA's website::

Contrary to myth, PETA does not want to confiscate animals who are well cared for and "set them free." What we want is for the population of dogs and cats to be reduced through spaying and neutering and for people to adopt animals (preferably two so that they can keep each other company when their human companions aren't home) from pounds or animal shelters—never from pet shops or breeders—thereby reducing suffering in the world.

Edit: Reddit, why are there so many negative comment scores in this thread? Just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean you should downvote them. Downvote bad comments, not bad ideas. I've done nothing but debate and cite sources and information, and so have many of the other negative comments.

The Los Angeles County animal shelters have a 61.4% kill rate. If ALL animals, sick, healthy or otherwise, taken in Los Angeles county are killed at that rate, is it really that unbelievable that PETA sees humane euthanization shelters as necessary?
