The same argument can and should be made regarding the US Constitution. It got plenty of things wrong as well, and had to be amended 10 times before it ever went into effect. In fact, the only thing it got exactly right is the amendment clause.

This is the nature of social contracts, they evolve to reflect the best available information we have about who we are as a species and what should be favored and disfavored to protect and improve our quality of life.

Those who cling to some historical snapshot of morality are doing a huge disservice to themselves and to those around them. We tolerate this irrational behavior assuming that only adults engage in it willingly, but the realities of indoctrination and communal pressure on children in religious communities paint a whole different picture.

Of course it's a shitty platform for advertising, because the user data they collect is extremely superficial. People post pictures of their vacations and 'Like' TV shows and movies. Notably missing are actual shopping data, internet search data, personal financial and scheduling data. This severely limits the type of products/services that you can actually expect people to respond to.

As for stereotyping and respect, look at it objectively. Forget Christianity, forget religion. Let's say there is a Star Wars Fan Club, they hold regular meetings, discuss the books and movies, wear costumes, etc...

Should I respect such an establishment? Should I consider it sacred somehow? While there may individuals who are worthy of respect for their actions, as a group, they dress funny and play make belief all day long, all of which is perfectly fine.

Now suppose that the Star Wars Fan Club starts sheltering pedophiles, makes women wear storm trooper outfits for "modesty", actively campaigns against equal rights, insists on teaching about The Force in public school science classes, spreads misinformation which leads to disease proliferation, uses donations to proselytize all over the world, all the while enjoying tax exemptions for its operations. I think any rational person would be appalled by this. They would demand all special privileges of this group be revoked immediately and its leaders tried for child abuse and crimes against humanity.

Someone could say 'but I'm just trying to be a good person by following the teachings of Yoda' and while that person's intentions may be good, they are still going about it in the shittiest way possible, and inadvertently supporting organizations led by criminal assholes.

Back to your point, I have respect for individuals who earn it through their actions, not their affiliations, and I see no reason to respect institutions that promote antiquated anti-scientific dogma.

Second, the point was that ideological labels are meaningless and the only reason to invoke them is to claim membership to some (presumably privileged) group and proclaim support for its actions. Therefore, if the group is known for abhorrent practices, claiming membership is in bad taste.

In the end of the day, what bothers me and I'm sure members of that atheist community as well is that Victor's refusal to disassociate himself from the label 'Christian' reveals that deep down he does use it to claim moral superiority and justify the horrors that are perpetrated under that banner.

It can be a gateway drug to arousal addiction, which has less to do with sex and more to do with rapid access to novelty. Much like a chemical drug addiction, it gradually changes your brain chemistry to demand more novelty, faster and faster (i.e. "internet addiction").

You become desensitized to the real world (inability to concentrate, inability to socialize, inability to be sexually aroused by real people) and start habitually seeking more porn and more internet inanity.

Although there is no chemical withdrawal, there is definitely dependence, and withdrawal - irritation, restlessness, insomnia, fatigue, binge eating and sometimes drug and alcohol abuse.

Of course, as with any drug, prohibition is completely ineffective and porn is certainly not the only thing that triggers this in people. The best solutions of course are simply unplugging/getting your children to unplug and discouraging use culturally (like with cigarettes) and treatment for addicts.

EDIT/DISCLAIMER: Much of this is not well understood because its difficult to study an addiction for which there are few physical markers and no chemical tests. Also, since most people still approach the issue from a moral perspective ("porn is baad, mkay") instead of a medical one, people (especially teenagers) are reluctant to discuss problematic use with councilors/researchers, so it persists.

Well, straightforward "death metal" is a razor thin sliver in the metal spectrum. Almost anything out after 2000 can only be properly described by adding a bunch of labels - like "melodic", "symphonic", "Viking", "Technical", "Progressive", etc...
