I can, off the top of my head, name about 20 people who go around telling people they have ADD without a proper diagnosis. Same for OCD. Most likely, the same for depression.

For each of those illnesses, I can probably name about 2 people I know who have actually been diagnosed.

[–]arsewhisperer 26 points27 points ago

I totally agree with this. Mental illness is incredibly intangible, and often hard to diagnose even for professionals. It's a gradient, more like hand-eye coordination than a broken bone (I have poor hand-eye coordination, but others have it worse.)

Because of the stigma, it's very easy to take advantage of the system. Almost anyone can fake anything, and no one can verify it without seeming insensitive.

And without the support of the truly mentally ill calling out the fakes and supporting verification, it will be hard to remove the stigma of fakers.

Dawkins himself, eh? Who is he, the leader of the Atheists?

(Yes, I know who he is, and I like him. But if Richard Dawkins said that he's certain that gods don't exist, I would still be uncertain)

Thinking about moving to Victoria, British Columbia. I'd like to know more about the area/city/country, especially things that aren't on the internet. by HippieFreak0312in canada

I lived there for a few years, and loved it. My favourite? Head to the ocean and find some tide pools. Get a dog and play on the beach (Dallas Road trail is a giant off-leash dog park)

The people are as laid back as they say, but there is a refreshing and growing influence of young entrepreneurs running some great shops and restaurants.

I disagree.

Having bigger feet means you need to lean farther forward. Take a half a step inwards (Pretend you have smaller feet) - it's suddenly easy.

It's all about distance from the wall.

WLC: Atheism requires proof by mvan4310in atheism

Technically, he is right. Saying "no god exists" would require proof.

But most of us don't claim that.

I once gave my mom a cd, and she told me all the songs sounded the same. I then found that her cd player was on track repeat. What are your parents' technology fails? by pseudosarain AskReddit

When my home laptop died after 8 years (the last 3 were on Ubuntu, to use less power and keep her alive longer), I called the IT supplier we use at work and told them I need a cheap new laptop.

"No problem. What size drive do you need?"

"I use it for Gmail and solitaire, and maybe Office on occasion, so whatever."

"No problem. What about processor speed?"

"I use it for Gmail and solitaire, and maybe Office on occasion, so whatever."

"Alrighty. What size screen?"

"I use it for Gmail and solitaire, and maybe Office on occasion, so whatever."

"Okay, do you have any data you need us to retrieve?"

"Nope."

"Alrighty. We'll get you a few quotes within the hour."

The range was from $400 - $1000. I chose the $400 one, and still feel like I have way too much power.

My bookkeeper got a new computer, and opened IE, then closed it, over and over again. I happened to be watching her, and asked her what she was doing.

"I need the internet. This just opens Google."

TIL the Bill Gates has, in his primary house in Seattle, seven bedrooms... and 24 bathrooms. by KoolPopsiclein todayilearned

[–]arsewhisperer 0 points1 point ago

That's not surprising. A friend has a house a third that size with 4 bedrooms and 18 bathrooms. Each bedroom has a bathroom (and fireplace, mini fridge, walk in closet and safe), the pool area has one, all three major entrances, the offices, etc...

(That's not counting the guest house, staff house, boat house, barn, and rest house on the trails.)
