Is Google Chrome any better than Firefox? by brodie268in AskReddit

[–]bomber991 0 points1 point ago

I've used firefox since it was called firebird. About 3 months ago I switched to chrome. FF was just running so damn slow, it made my computer feel like an old piece of shit. Chrome doesn't.

At work, we use IE8. It's good, but it sucks compared to chrome. Just all the little things that make chrome and firefox both nice seem to be absent form IE.

The story has gotten pretty damn good where I'm at. Now I'm at a free-roaming part. I have to essentially get from one side of the map to the other, but my guys were way too weak to get all the way across the map. There's these "Cieth Stones" that give you missions to go to a location and kill a specific monster. There's 60 something missions I think.

Yeah, the story got good, but yes, pretty much the whole game thus far, 30 hours into it, is run down a hallway for 15 minutes, watch a 5 minute cinematic, and repeat.

I got my PS3 last year in June. So far, I've completed LA Noir, Uncharted, and Red Dead Redemption. I finished them before August and have been on Final Fantasy 13 since then. I'm only 30 hours into FF13 right now. I got no time to play games :(

Just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and I'm loving it! by Disconsolatein linux

[–]bomber991 2 points3 points ago

I like the whole concept of Linux, and I think it's pretty damn cool that it's gotten as far as it has, but man, I stuck with Ubuntu for one college semester, then dumped it and went back to Windows XP.

OpenOffice kept messing up the formatting with word, excel, and powepoint files shared between classmates on group projects. I also needed Solidworks for some classes as well.

Other than those two issues, my SATA hard drive never showed up anywhere. And the absolutely, most annoying thing about using Ubuntu was that it was about as stable as Windows95 was. I'd be using it, and then randomly the entire screen would lock up on me.

I also put Ubuntu on my netbook. It just sucks. The hibernate mode doesn't work properly. On my touchpad, you're supposed to be able to scroll up and down on the right side of it with your finger. That worked, and then I updated ubuntu, and now it doesn't work. The batterylife seems to be only 4 hours on Ubuntu while it's 6 hours with Windows7. Half the time when I boot up the touchpad doesn't even work. And Netflix doesn't work on Linux. My main uses for that netbook are checking my email, surfing the web, and watching netflix. What good is it if I can't do one of those?

In the end, I came to the conclusion that WindowsXP was already doing everything for me that I needed it to do. Ubuntu was able to do most of the things that I needed, but the stability just wasn't there for me.

Do you want fries with that? *toot* by Linder0thin fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

It's cool. I was in your shoes not too long ago. Didn't work at McDonalds though, but a food establishment. I finished college and just got a job with my degree at the beginning of this month. Unfortunately this job I got pays about half of what I expected to make, but this is still double what I was making working in the food service world, so I'm happy.

/r/sanantonio: Roll call for all those who are going to vote against Lamar Smith on May 29th! by Mike450in sanantonio

[–]bomber991 0 points1 point ago

You know, I'm about 100% positive that I live within District 21, but my voters registration card says I'm in district 20 for the US Representative. Yet, according to the interactive map on Lamar Smiths website, my location is within the boundary limits.

http://lamarsmith.house.gov/District/InteractiveMap.htm

And, according to http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us it says Lamar Smith represents me, except there's an asterisk by his name that says "indicates address is located near a district boundary. If absolute certainty about the district assignment of the address is required, please contact the local county voter registration office for verification."

So, I guess I'll have to contact the local county voter registration office to get my district fixed, but there's no way that can be done before the 29th. Guess I don't get to vote against Lamar Smith :(

[–]bomber991 0 points1 point ago

True. If gas drops down to $2/gallon, well shit, that's great. If it goes up to $6/gallon, well damn, that sucks, but it doesn't suck as much if you're getting 50mpg.

The future is now. by abswin geek

[–]bomber991 4 points5 points ago

Well, let's re-analyze this thing. A new Hyundai Accent is rated to get 30mpg city and 40mpg highway, for a combined rating of 33mpg. The average yearly mileage is 12,000 miles. 12000/33=363 gallons of gas. I used to say gas is $3/gallon, and when that was the case that'd be a yearly gas cost of $1089. At $4/gallon it's $1452.

The guy says he considered a Prius C. It's combined mpg rating is 50mpg. At $3/gal that's a yearly cost of $720, and at $4/gal that's $960.

Anyways, if gas is $4/gallon, and the Accent cost $1452 each year to fill, and the Prius C cost $960, that'd be $492 saved each year on gas by having the Prius C. Pretty much $500 saved per year. But the Hyundai was $5000 cheaper, you'd have to drive the Prius C for 10 years before you'd come out ahead in total cost. Though I'm sure a 10 year old Prius C is going to be worth a whole helluva lot more than a 10 year old Hyundai is, so I'm sure you'd come out ahead with the prius well before the 10 year mark.

The Most Logical Route for Urban Rail, Phase One by really_bad_ideain Austin

[–]bomber991 1 point2 points ago

DAE think sending a rail line straight up Guadalupe and Lamar would be the biggest construction nightmare?

No kidding. It'd only take 10-15 years to complete this line. How long did the Metrorail thing take? The thing where all they really had to do was build 5 stations and make sure all the rail crossings met the safety specifications?

Slavery! by UtopicVisionin conspiracy

[–]bomber991 -2 points-1 points ago

That's bullshit. Economic slavery? Yeah, if you want to live a comfortable life, you've got to work for it. There's enough wellfare out there that you could do fine working 30 hours a week making $9/hr at a food job like I was a few months ago.

[–]bomber991 3 points4 points ago

I talked to an older lady in the grocery store parking lot who had a volt. I asked her, how often does she fill it up. She told me "Oh we took a trip to dallas a few months ago so we had to fill it up then, but that's the only time it's ever been filled up"

I'd like a volt but I can't get one right now.

The future is now. by abswin geek

[–]bomber991 6 points7 points ago

My dad's prius is pretty damn nice. It's not small, plenty of space in it. n fact, it's got the most rear leg room of any car I've ever been in. It doesn't handle bad. Handles better than the dodge ram it replaced.

Now yes, right now with current gas prices, hybrids still don't really make a whole lot of sense. I think the future though of cars is going to be based on the plug-in hybrid model. That's a car like the volt, where you plug it in and let it charge overnight. Then the next time you drive it, your first few miles, anywhere from the first 10 to 50 miles, run completely off of the battery as a purely electric vehicle. Once the battery is drained, the internal combustion engine kicks on, and now the car runs the same as a hybrid, getting you 30 to 50 mpg.

The problem right now are the economics of the whole thing. Like you were saying, you could just get a Hyundai Accent for $5k less. That's a good 5 years extra worth of gas right now.

One guy on Yelp ... by jay2770in funny

[–]bomber991 0 points1 point ago

I like the way amazon does the product reviews. You've got the most helpful 4 or 5 star review, and then you've got the most helpful critical 1-3 star review. Something like that would be better than the yelp mess.

One guy on Yelp ... by jay2770in funny

[–]bomber991 4 points5 points ago

Well Mr.Business Owner, most of the reviews for good restaurants where I live seem to have at most 40 reviews. For the less popular places that have a handfull of reviews, it takes but a few seconds of my time to read that 2 star review someone left to realize that person is an idiot. So don't worry about it too much.

Sure, there's going to be people like "Eww, this place only got a 2 star rating on Yelp! Don't go there it sucks!", but I'd hope most people would recognize that that rating doesn't mean a whole lot if there's only one or two reviews total.
