Writers - what's your day job? by PrivateIronin writing

[–]buddha067 2 points3 points ago

I answered an ad in the newspaper. Before that, I had done a bit of freelancing for some local and regional trade magazines...construction equipment, workers' compensation, business spotlights, etc. There wasn't much money, but it allowed me to get some experience and build a portfolio of clippings. When the opportunity finally came along, I was ready with a pocketful of experience and my name already in print.

Aim for the stars, but start small and slowly build your career.

Writers - what's your day job? by PrivateIronin writing

[–]buddha067 16 points17 points ago

I'm actually a copywriter by trade, but I also do freelance writing on the side. Before my luck changed, I did just about everything to make ends meet: clerked in a convenience store, loaded beer trucks, mowed yards, made eyeglasses...

But I never gave up on being a full-time writer. Now I'm in my 40's and living the dream.

Moral? Never. Give. Up.

If you love Carver's writing, check out the movie "Short Cuts" by Robert Altman. It's based on nine Carver stories, and I think it's a great interpretation of his writing.

That being the case, then give me some concrete (not metaphysical) evidence that a god exists.

Otherwise, it's back to "agree to disagree".

Simple response...you can't prove that he/she does exist.

Have you considered a couple of old filing cabinets from a used office supply store and a piece of plywood? That's worked for me for five years now. Definitely a cheap option.

I keep a list of potential story titles. Whenever I get in a slump, I break out the list and read through it. It almost always stirs up ideas.

Besides, it's fun to break out the list every so often and add to it...just random story titles, some silly, some serious.

Hope this helps....good luck, mate.

I'll give the reddit servers a shot. Just seems like the quality of players has gone downhill lately.

This is why I've been playing in offline mode. Even though the bots can be annoyingly stupid, at least they are swearing and going off on homophobic rants.

I've gotten burned out on public servers, and don't play enough to pay for a server spot. Seems like offline is the only other option.

Posting on reddit for feedback isn't really publishing, so that isn't an issue.

As far as "who wrote it first", well, you just have to trust your fellow redditers. We're a motley bunch, but we're mostly good folks.

In the U.S., basic copyright protection is applied as soon as you put words to paper. For legal reasons, filing a copyright with the Library of Congress (for a fee) makes it even more official. However, with Reddit being international it would depend on the laws in your home country.

That being said, most of the folks here seem nice enough to not steal your work...not that it won't happen, but you take your chances no matter what you do.

Be brave and give it a shot. Good luck!

The best advice I ever picked up in a writing class was, "learn all the rules, then do your own thing."

I think Kurt would have approved.
