Learning by trial an error gives the learner a deeper understanding of the problem rather than the student who simply follows directions.

Michigan School Suspends 60 High School Seniors for biking to school... banned from annual last day Senior walk through school by railroad-redditorin bicycling

A 1 day suspension and not going to graduation? Doesn't sound like punishment to me.

His first sentence is quite true. There should be separate laws governing two complete different modes of transportation, especially when one is 100x more likely to kill.

There's a difference between being law abiding and courteous. You can be courteous while still breaking laws. A bike running a red light after making sure no ones coming is no different than jay walking in my opinion. I also don't see anything wrong with bikes or cars rolling through stop signs if they slow down enough to ensure there's no one walking through the intersection.

If you're in a bike lane and someone is trying to turn right, getting out of the way is the nice thing to do. There was someone on here a couple months ago who was saying that he wasn't allowed by law to get out of the bike lane so he just sits and blocks right-turning cars until the light turns green. There's nothing that irritates me more than treatings laws as more important than common sense.

Also if you're slowing down traffic, you should at least try to keep your speed up as much as you can. When I'm driving and I see cyclists gliding along at 10 mph in the middle of the road I get pretty angry.

I'm based in PA, 19 years old, and would like to save up to take a cross country road-trip to the west coast to some amazing climbing spots, camping along the way. Anyone do anything like this and could give me an idea of how much it'd cost? I'm aiming for next summer. by Blackbalisong42in climbing

If you sign up for CS make sure you host a few people before you take off on your trip if you can. It's good to have some references and to give back to the community!

I would highly recommend signing up to couch surfing. I drove from Pittsburgh to SF and met tons of amazing people along the way. If you search the site for climbing related terms you will undoubtably find some climbers who will let you crash with them and show you local crags. From experience, they will also give you weed.

I think at least 10% of the people on /r/climbing live in the bay area. Not that much of a coincidence.

Adding to this question, is it 'legal' to hold the starting block with one hand and put another hand in the air or one the wall (but not a hold)? Sometimes this is just much easier and if you're outdoor climbing it won't make any difference obviously.

Mexico's Drug War: 50,000 Dead in 6 Years by mepperin worldnews

[–]cantquitreddit 0 points1 point ago

The wiki article touches on it. Some went into other illegal activities like prostitution, gambling, and illegal drugs (these should all be legal by the way). Others faded out. The violence largely subsided. What is your point?

Please read this very brief paragraph about the Mafia in America during the Prohibition era. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Mafia#Prohibition_era . A very large percentage of their profits came from illegal alcohol trade. This is what put them in the limelight. You can't afford to pay 10,000 cartel soldiers when your profit margin is reduced.

Mexico's Drug War: 50,000 Dead in 6 Years by mepperin worldnews

[–]cantquitreddit 2 points3 points ago

There is a reason why the Anheuser-Busch cartel isn't at war with Coors Brewing Company. They both compete for the same market but they have legal means to settle disputes in court. The reason drug cartels resort to violence is if someone steals your product, you can't go to the police to get it back / put them in jail. Because you can't use the legal system, you use the illegal system.

They would stop trafficking when the legal channel to trade drugs is cheaper. The reason they charge higher prices in the black market is because resources must be spent avoiding authorities. Prohibition 101.

There will always be a market for drugs. If there were no black market, there would be less violence, less dispute over territory, and less dispute over profits.

My gf and I just signed up for a guided castle rock tour via groupon and got a good deal ($150 for 2 people for 4 hours). http://www.castlerockclimbingschool.com/ We go in a few weeks and are hoping to learn the basics of lead climbing and get comfortable with it. We're in the same position - climbed indoors mostly and are anxious to hit some rocks.

I'm not going to search in depth because I'm at work but medical marijuana is polling in the 70's or 80's but recreational legalization has certainly broken 50%. Also many states have addendums that are voted on by public opinion and as legalization gains ground in states the feds will take notice.
