The Great Engineering Shortage of 2012 by coder316in programming

[–]coder316[S] 1 point2 points ago

You sound jaded. What was it that first brought you into the industry all those years ago? For me, it's my passion for what we do. I love learning new technologies, writing code while hopefully improving the lives of others - even if it's in some small way like automating an otherwise boring task. Clean, reusable code is sexy. Spending my days designing systems or creating that hot new feature, it's like I get to play a game all day long and earn an honest living for it!

Sure there are some developers who see it as a "job" and thus care little about the quality of the code they write, or maybe they do care and they're still learning. Either way, is it worth the energy to hold such contempt and resentment for these people? Insist on peer reviews and uphold a higher standard. The ones who resist likely lack the desire to do improve and do better (and are therefore of little use to your organization), while those who do care would probably be grateful and inspired to improve.

Same with business people - many probably "like" technology but know little about it, yet in this digital age are forced to remain competitive and manage something they don't quite understand. Yes some are gold diggers, but they also pay your bills. Don't like the management? Then quit. There's plenty of opportunity out there. Heck, go work for a non-profit or start your own thing. Make a difference.

But then, there's the bigger picture of it all. I believe software (or rather, science & technology as a whole) has the potential to change the world. Just look how it has influenced and changed our lives so substantially every five years over the past three decades. Look how many jobs were created because of it. People are now more connected than ever before and have greater access to knowledge and information.

I agree with you 100%. Clean, reusable code has a sort of peaceful zen to it. Coding is my passion, and has been since I was a child. In 6th grade I started by making ugly websites with wysiwyg editors, in 8th grade I picked up a book on html, and spent all of high school writing php. Now at age 24, I'm doing what I love and coludn't be happier.

Just simply that programmers are in fact quite often referred to as an "engineer" in a lot of places, in contrast to louie's comment. Heck, even my bachelor's degree is in "software engineering." This is not an uncommon thing or an attempt to sound pretentious.

Holy Shit, I was big... (240lbs to 180lbs) by MrTwenty6in Fitness

[–]coder316 2 points3 points ago

I broke up with the girlfriend... hit the gym... and lost about a good 30-40lbs in a few weeks.

I literally had to laugh out loud at this one. I hope you ran into her a month after breaking up, I bet she would have been lost for words haha.

Is anyone willing to let a student couchsurf for several days while the student attends an academic conference for genetics? by inquilinekeain BostonSocialClub

Hey, I have a place in Somerville, about a mile from Davis sq (which is on the red line).

I see you go to Brown - cool, I went to JWU (software engineer major). I can give you a couch to sleep on if you promise not to steal my tv lol.

Thank you. I was just browsing youtube when I realized "What the fuck am I doing!?" so I returned to this thread to say that finally, after hours of procrastination I found my will to get it done.

Found some relevant info: http://www.mass.gov/rmv/license/7moped.htm

Still not sure if that implies the above perks (eg. no insurance, free parking, etc).
