This Stop-The-Ashby-High-Rise stuff is out of control... by some_kind_of_benin houston

i can't help but think of these people as rich whiners who want to live basically in the heart of a city at suburban density levels. grow up, and stop being so selfish.

TIL that Houston, Texas elected an openly gay mayor... twice by iCookBaconShirtlessin todayilearned

i've seriously never heard anyone in houston mention it, 100% of discussion i've seen has been things like this where people are surprised, or proud etc.

Consciousness Does Not Reside Here: Scientific American by cohesionin Buddhism

[–]cohesion[S] 2 points3 points ago

hmm, it's hard to out into words for me. consciousness seems like a higher more complicated object. attention is sharp and in the moment. consciousness definitely comes and goes, and in my experience is usually gone actually. attention seems more related to senses directly.

probably actual Buddhist texts would be better than my terrible rambling, but I don't know which ones are particularly good.

attention and consciousness i think can be easily differentiated in meditation, but reading that the areas for consciousness and the visual parts of the brain aren't directly connected was interesting (in macaques anyway, probably also humans?)

one of those things that become experientially obvious with meditation.

What is Buddhist confession? by niko2000slpin Buddhism

[–]cohesion 1 point2 points ago

We do a new moon ceremony that is referred to as confession sometimes, but it's not like catholic confession at all. It's just a restatement of the vows, and saying the atonement gatha ("all my ancient twisted karma..."). (There is also a long part thanking the ancestors that transmitted the dharma, but that's not really confession related, I guess :)

There is no private one on one aspect of this ceremony.

How does Buddhism view being overweight? by miamihappyin Buddhism

[–]cohesion 1 point2 points ago

i've never heard anyone say that being overweight itself is a hindrance, but the causes of that might point to hindrances someone has. These are so numerous I don't even know where to start. I don't think many western buddhists would initiate that conversation, but meditation alone could probably help bring some of those causes in the open.

One of the precepts that we use in Zen is variously, don't use intoxicants, wikipedia lists it as "Proceed clearly – Do not cloud the mind" etc. A good way to think of it is not trying to always augment the situation. In my personal experience with overeating this is the most relevant to me, but I think people's reasons for overeating are probably very diverse. For me, I often overeat to modify my reality. For example, I'm enjoying one thing, wouldn't it be better to have a little snack with this?

Question on Buddhist service by skkid11in Buddhism

I go to a soto zen temple also, and it is almost exactly like this. on the main day though (Saturday) we only have one 30 minute meditation, and no kinhin for people that might not be used to that much.

agree, thank you for posting this. the parts about an encompassing awareness of the entire body are helpful.

I am not the original thread poster, so I can't be sure what they are referring to, but I will try to answer more directly. Any group of people will split off and have different views on things. Of course there are lots of types of buddhism, and people who are newer might be more willing to think this one is the best or that one. In personal practice I haven't seen much of this actually. The sangha I attend regularly has people talk from other traditions, and it's not an issue, but with more conservative groups it might be.

Here is a good discussion of a buddhist story related.

Buddhism is like a technology, there is a goal, and instructions. But maybe more than one instruction set can get you to the same place. :)

agree to some extent, but hopefully if you are lucky enough to have a zen community it's not all inscrutable stories all the time. :) there is a lot of practical advice also, and for me, zen is very helpful since i am very prone to attaching to goals. zen does a good job of reminding me that these goals are also just thoughts.

Kalama Sutta vs. the hindrance of doubt by gomer11in Buddhism

[–]cohesion 0 points1 point ago

Believing this or not is up to you. Don't think of it as something you have to accept or not, that you can like or dislike. When you sit, does doubt hinder you? See if it does. Don't worry about a proscription for doubt, that's nothing. Is there doubt or not? The hindrances don't say you shouldn't doubt, just that it's a possible problem.

Kalama Sutta vs. the hindrance of doubt by gomer11in Buddhism

[–]cohesion 1 point2 points ago

I've had that word "doubt" in the hindrances be explained to me as "corrosive doubt", as opposed to giving up and not verifying things yourself. (this is sloth, by the way.)

Corrosive doubt, I think, is the very specific mental state, self-doubt, doubt that enlightenment exists, etc. If it's something you can verify, you should, but if you start to think that you aren't good enough, or you don't have what it takes, this I think is the hindrance of doubt.

In the book Being Nobody, Going Nowhere, the author describes this sort of doubt as a farmer trying to dig a well, and after digging for a few feet gives up and moves. Over, and over this happens, soon his whole farm is covered with shallow holes. If only he had dug for a while in any place he would have reached the water by now.

most of my experience is with zen. i would say that it is extremely non-supernatural. nirvana is not a supernatural thing, it's just a neurocognitive change that can happen as a result of a process that you can do. the evidence of this, and everything, is only in your sensate reality.
