Robert Baratheon's Kingsguard by mkontrovin asoiaf

I don't think Moore was considered to be skilled, but "dangerous" in that he was an unknown. He didn't do particularly well in tourney, and was appointed by favor of Jon Arryn.

(Spoilers all) You can change one event that would affect the entire subsequent plot, what would it be? by thefranin asoiaf

I don't know. I haven't seen evidence in ASOIAF of the ability to defeat Newtonian physics. Dragons are just another creature. I'm sure there's some scientific explanation for them, as well as explanations for everything else. I'm not a fan of the "Magic! Aliens! God!" explanation. I'm OK with the unknown, but not OK with assuming that it's completely supernatural.

In full disclosure, I am 80% kidding.

So Bran would only be falling about 115 feet instead of 120? He'll be fine! /s

I think that would just make it a bit harder for Bran to get around, as Hodor would have lost both arms as Bran's body ripped them off.

For a tiny bit of math, that would be the equivalent of roughly 20,000 J (in terms of K.E. at moment of impact).

Or Aerys could have done to Lyanna what he did to Rhaella. And Jon could be Dany's half-sister. That makes the potential love-story even more Targaryen-esque.

And the knights at the ToJ could have been there to guard Lyanna by Aerys's command, not Rhaegar's.

(Spoiler Speculation) Yesterday I analyzed how Bran's storyline fits into Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey." No one noticed, so I'm reposting. by Spooner71in asoiaf

I can see you being right. This would probably be a very good question to ask GRRM at a conference instead of "When is Dany going back to Westeros?"

I for one would be totally OK with an additional 12 month wait for the next book if GRRM did a book on writing, akin to Stephen King's "On Writing", which is fantastic even if you don't like his fantasy-horror, crowd-pleasing stuff.

I think you're reaching. Interesting write-up, however.

I don't think GRRM is trying that hard to fit any particular character into a specific type of plot advancement device or trope. It appears that he's trying to tell stories about sacrifice, power and human frailty, using his characters has narrative devices. I wouldn't put the stories in any particular box, other than the overall literary device of

[character introduced - initial conflict - rising action - climax - falling action]

Rhaegar and Lyanna present themselves to Rickard Stark and announce they are marrying. Rickard gives consent (clearly he would want this more than a Baratheon marriage). Completely different events affect Westeros.

I don't disagree on Cutler and Brees, but is Brees worth over twice what Cutler is worth? I'd rather have Cutler at 10.3 and have an extra 11 million to sign O-linemen and quality receivers. At a certain point, the mega-salaries make the team worse because there's no cap room.

(Spoiler/Speculation All) Give me an event/theory/prophecy interpretation for Book(s) 6 + 7 that I haven't heard yet. I'll start... by I_Joe_Cooperin asoiaf

[–]corduroyblack 1 point2 points ago

I don't buy that GRRM planned that well in advance. I think the dream just refers to Sandor, Jamie and Gregor within the context of AGOT. I would stretch it to include all later books.

Walker's new Deer Czar looks to privatize deer hunting like texas. by thereyouwentin wisconsin

[–]corduroyblack 0 points1 point ago

He had to go all the way to Texas to hire someone who'd do what he wants.

The DNR itself isn't the problem. It's the entrenched bureaucracy of the DNR that prevents the actual scientists from being able to put controls in place to fix problems. The place is rife with political appointees going back to Thompson and McCallum. If you want a good DNR, it needs indepedence from the political process. And the politicians will never give a hot button issue back to people who aren't beholden to them.

I think people probably downvote a millionaire demanding a pay raise of 10% on top of 20 million a year.

At that level, he's only fighting for parity with the other top paid QBs.

According to Spotrac, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, and Mike Vick are all getting higher salaries than Brees. Is he actually trying to get the #1 QB salary in the league? $20 million/year would give that to him. Is he really worth that much?

For comparison's sake:

  • Matt Stafford: $12 million
  • Aaron Rodgers: $10.8 million
  • Jay Cutler: $10.3 million

Is Brees really worth 10 million more than any of those guys?

Four IMGUR links on the front page... by templeowlin asoiaf

The subreddit is not going to go all-self posts, despite the positives of that approach. If images become a problem, I trust the mods may change the rules. As of right now, it's not a problem yet.

Four IMGUR links on the front page... by templeowlin asoiaf

[–]corduroyblack 4 points5 points ago

I have no idea why this post (OP, not you lordhadri) has gotten so many upvotes. 4 imgur links? So what? I was a huge proponent of limiting memes on this subreddit. But 4 imgur links? 4 pictures? Not a big deal. There's a wide difference between /r/gameofthrones and /r/asoiaf. There's just no comparison. The imgur links here are new content. I don't think anyone here really minds cool illustrations of scenes from the books.

I think we mostly hate the pointless posts of screen-caps with funny subtitles that have infested /r/gameofthrones and /r/thewalkingdead, for 2 examples.

The Song of the Seven ... I put Martin's words to music. What do you think of it, r/asoiaf? by dick_nrakein asoiaf

[–]corduroyblack 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for contributing your work. I liked it a lot!

It sounds vaguely similar to the "Misty Mountains" song used in the trailer to The Hobbit.

As a former recording artist, I would suggest doing another take and maybe recording directly from your instrument, as the sound quality was relatively poor. Keep practicing! :)

I guess that for whatever reason, Manderly doesn't strike me as the sentimental type.

Maybe it's his baking.

(Spoilers ALL) Wyman Manderly, the Lord of White Harbor by ultnessin asoiaf

[–]corduroyblack 11 points12 points ago

I don't think you said anything that contradicts me.

He's all about putting a Stark back in Winterfell. My point is that that Stark doesn't necessarily need to be a "King". It's about influence for him. Further, he offered to marry Lady Hornwood in ACOK. He's all about the power and influence. If he's responsible for restoring the power of the Great House of the North, House Manderly becomes the #2 house of the North, far above the other noble houses.

There are just as many games being played surrounding the ruler of Winterfell as there are games surrounding the Iron Throne or the Driftwood Chair. The point is that all nobles desire power. Manderly wants a child Stark to rule in Winterfell. Why? Because Manderly is the only person in the position to control such a child. Umbers? They're all dead or locked up. Cerwyn, Dustin, Hornwood? Dead. Backing Boltons, Dead. Karstark, dead. Mormont, weak and backing Stannis, but also Stark. Reed? MIA. And if the Starks rise up, House Bolton's a goner. There's also the issue of a Northern Conspiracy, so who knows what the noble and lesser houses are up to?

Granted, I think this will all be mooted by the Others wrecking shit, but that remains to be seen.

Bran's not impotent. Plus, he's only 11 years old.

Paralyzed people can have children.

(Spoilers ALL) Wyman Manderly, the Lord of White Harbor by ultnessin asoiaf

[–]corduroyblack 11 points12 points ago

Not really. Manderly already pledged to support Stannis as King as long as he could place a Stark in Winterfell.

I don't think Manderly gives two shits about a Stark being a King. He's about long-term influence over Winterfell and thus, the game of thrones itself.

There are some striking similarities between Manderly and Doran Martell.

Also, I anticipate that Wyman will survive the Battle of Winterfell long enough to tell Stannis that Davos has survived (Stannis thinks he is dead as of the end of ADWD) and that there is another Stark that has survived.
