Sucks. I lived in Mexico for 3 years, not making me an expert on these things, but like any place 99.9% of the people are great, community-driven, disgusted by drug lords and their actions, hard-working, friendly etc. They have their share of 'machismo' and lie a lot (no such thing in Mexico as truth) but it's a great place. I spent 2 weeks in Cancun with a Mexican friend outside the resort area and went to a lot of clubs like these. There is definitely a huge lawless area of Cancun full of drugs, prostitutes (also really a fun area!) but I'm saddened to read news like this.

Just was run off the road and almost hit a dumpster a few days ago by some thugs, but honestly this is pretty infrequent. People like this are a nightmare but unavoidable with more time bicycling. You have to deal with them and hope to leave the situation alive, but that's it. HAVE FUN RIDING YOUR BIKE

Pursue ANY social activity that interests you. You will inevitably meet girls that will like you. For me it's theatre (which is yes optimal)

Failing that, go out by yourself, see what happens, talk to people, enjoy life, be happy, you can ultimately talk to anyone you choose to. The power is yours. I've met girls in coffee shops, parks, etc. and although it NEVER worked out, sometimes I had a great conversation and of course (asked them lots of questions.)

One of my best friends from High School became paranoid schizophrenic when he was 23. He took a bus from Philadelphia to San Francisco because he said people were chasing him, he arrived in San Francisco with 0 dollars and called me to see if I knew a place to stay (I grew up in that area.) Later when I saw him he told me he had been abducted by aliens at some point etc. Anyway, it sounds like your friend is suffering from this, very sad but he can get help. It may be hard to convince him to do that unfortunately...for my one friend it was very difficult to stay on the medication.

I'm at 50k words right now. I finished the first 40k during a month of writing everyday, the last 10k have come slower but are there. But I think you are right, that the more you write it, the easier it becomes...and when you go back to the beginning to edit, you have a whole new set of tools at your disposal (such as knowing where the story goes.) That being said I try not to count words. Use as many as necessary, but no more than that, right? I just plan on ending my story before it gets boring. Best of luck with your book!
