Space Elevator Planned By 2050 In Japan by nibble4bitsin scifi

[–]davincih 13 points14 points ago

2050 seems too far away anyway. Anything planned any further out than 2020 I assume will never actually happen. If it was really going to happen, they'd get it done faster.

I think we're past the point where we need to worry about spoilers for BSG. lol

Because you used it as a way to dismiss the entire article by calling it the work of an angry fanboy. It's intellectually dishonest.

You don't need an apocalypse to have conflict.

Didn't someone post an article on Reddit he other day though about how it's not actually true people were all hopeful and behind space exploration back in the day? We all just remember it that way because we were kids.

Apparently at the time no one actually supported the space program, even when we were going to the moon.

Maybe things aren't so different now.

I like this approach. There's a problem, how do we fix it?

Well the easiest and most obvious answer is get some space opera back on the air. And not the BSG variety (much as I love it), but something more hopeful. Something more exploration based.

I saw an idea awhile back about making a new Star Trek series called "Federation" which would be sort of like the West Wing but set in the future where aliens and humans must work together to manage a huge galactic government. Something like that could be really interesting... and inspire ways to deal with our own problems by highlighting our micro issues on a macro level.

Why do you instantly turn to insulting anyone who disagrees with you?

Only weakens your argument dude.

Where does the logical consistency fall apart for Back to the Future? I think it actually holds together pretty well... at least in the first movie.

Time travel does not HAVE to be a cheap plot trick, it's just been used that way in recent years.

The Two Ways Science Fiction is Slowly Destroying Itself by Shadow_Jackin scifi

[–]davincih -3 points-2 points ago

Oh come on, I liked the new Star Trek movie but the usage of time travel, however well done, really was just one big excuse for them to recast popular characters with good looking young people. And even if you disagree with that, you're focusing on one tiny, minor point in a long article and using it as a way to dismiss the whole thing, which isn't a valid way to discuss something making a much broader point.

Look at that list of the movies coming out this year. Three time travel movies is waaay too many in a given year... particularly when no one is making ANYTHING else. There's a very good point here.

Huh? What movie are you talking about? It's not Avengers, that's a superhero movie with some sci-fi elements but it's more superheroes than sci-fi.

Untrue. There were gay characters and gay romance in several episodes.

The Hobbit versions for book covers by xnejtxin scifi

The Hobbit is fantasy, not sci-fi. If ever there was a book that's more fantasy and more NOT sci-fi I can't name it.

DS9 wasn't important in the beginning, it only became important near the series' end. And as it became more important... eventually it basically had an entire fleet attached to it.

I made a facebook group for Atheists at my school. Christian got angry at the idea of that and sent me this. by Felix06in atheism

Yep. Also repressed Christian girls are pretty easy to get in bed. They talk big but they're usually pretty slutty if you put in the work to get past that wall.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – The Retro Review: Does It Hold Up? by complexmind51in scifi

Citizen Kane? Does it Hold Up? Ugh.

The worst argument smart religious people make most often: God must exist because it's too terrible for him not to. by NikKnackin atheism

[–]davincih 0 points1 point ago

I've listened to this Prager/Carolla thing and pretty much every word out of Prager's mouth is intellectually dishonest and disgusting.

I'm really disappointed in Carolla for teaming up with him. The guy is a pretty big slime.

Prager vowed to convert Carolla shortly after telling people that religious people don't have teams.

Prager asked an Atheist audience member "who would you rather have watch your kids, someone who just came from Bible study or someone who hadn't" and when the guy said the non-Bible reader, he just accused him of lying and launched into a speech about how religious people are intrinsically more moral and trustworthy.

Don't care that Prager is a sleaze but Carolla is really giving Atheism a bad name by participating.

Is there a "web-only" series that you would recommend? by achanceswin scifi

L5, which has had some play here, is pretty promising.

But outside of that, The Guild is definitely the high-water mark.

Has to be a better way to do that. Torrents are great but the truth is that most people can't use them. They limited their audience and potential donors.

First off, L5 is fantastic and I plan to donate immediately.

That said... why didn't they release it on YouTube right away, instead of only making it available on a niche platform which the average internet user does not know how to use or understand?

Not a great marketing plan.

I'm a guy, and this offended me.. by AndyDaGhostin atheism

You know what's even worse than this? Being offended by things.

People need to quit with the taking offense.

Instead just say... this is dumb, I disagree with it, whatever.

But stop taking offense... at anything.
