Can We Stop With the 0% Off Steam Posts? by DigitallyGeekingin gaming

[–]denor 1 point2 points ago

If "Can we stop..." posts worked, people wouldn't need to keep making "Can we stop" posts.

The thing is, it's not like this measure will prevent hacking / item duping, it'll just make it take slightly longer for interested parties to figure out. There have been exploitable things like that in World of Warcraft, for instance, and that's also an entirely server-side game. The "we did it for security" excuse is just a dodge, it's Security through Obscurity at best.

Make what's essentially a completely different game that does client-side calculations

Package part of the server code with each client

The thing I don't get about this argument is that this is exactly what every other multiplayer game with a singleplayer component does, and has been doing, for years. Even Starcraft II - a recent game by the same people - doesn't have an online-only requirement, and that's an E-sport. For Blizzard to suddenly turn around and say "Nope, can't do that, it's too hard" when they've repeatedly done it in the past just rings false.

Oh man, same thing here. I got taught - by the driving instructor in Michigan - to pull into the intersection to turn left.

Then I got it wrong on the test because, as it turns out, that's not legal. Thanks a lot, dude ಠ_ಠ

Actually, it's been used figuratively since before you spoke the language.

I love the etymonline site, though. People dislike the misuse of 'decimate', for instance, but it's also been used as its own complement for hundreds of years. Unlike 'literally', though, it didn't have the decency to take centuries. It only took sixty years!

Minecraft On 360 Was Profitable Within An Hour by zakislamin Games

[–]denor 7 points8 points ago

Two reasons:

1: Because this isn't a future version of Minecraft, at least not in the way Notch mentioned.

Now, on the face of it, this is a stupid statement: Of course this is a version of minecraft. It's the XBox 360 version, right? Only the thing is, the original statement meant 'version' in the sense of "Minecraft Version 3.0". It was to assure people that even if a big expansion of Minecraft came along they might want to charge for, they wouldn't do so. They bought it once in that form and, no matter how that form might evolve, they get to keep it.

Minecraft 360 isn't that form. It's a different codebase, made by an entirely different company. Imagine that Hasbro created a Minecraft board game (and they licensed the rights to the name to do so). It shares the name and theme and likely plays similarly to the game, but it's not the same thing. (For an 'actually happening' example, see minecraft lego) These are both technically 'versions' of Minecraft, but you wouldn't expect to get them for free.

2: Because they are contractually forbidden from doing so. Microsoft doesn't allow free on their marketplace.

Okay, so.. We've all played it now. We all have our opinions, but, lets see if we can collectively get together and come up with things we think they could improve/do make the game more fun. by Minifig81in Guildwars2

[–]denor 3 points4 points ago

The problem was that I was under-leveled (no hearts at my level, no events nearby). So my choices were to either grind mobs (exceedingly slow, from what I've noticed) or grind events.

I wouldn't mind adjustments to the XP curve to prevent this from happening, but to be honest, I enjoy the events. I want to do more of them. I'd like to be able to jump into one without spending money waypointing around.

I mentioned it in another comment, but: Show events on the map.

I don't mean how they are now, where if you're near enough you'll see them, I mean anywhere in the zone. Make it optional so the map's not super cluttered if you're just trying to get from point A to point B.

There were a number of times I was up for an event (and needed one because I was under-leveled) and had to just port around aimlessly until I happened to find something happening.

DAE find the human start area to have a gap between level 4 and 6? by onlyamonthin Guildwars2

[–]denor 1 point2 points ago

I found myself to constantly be behind the level curve. I was 14 when I finished up the human 1-15 starting area, for instance. The hearts I hadn't completed were almost always a level or two higher than me.

I hadn't been avoiding events, either. I love the events! I wanted to do more of them. Everything just seemed quiet when I was looking for something to do, though.

I'd really love to see (assuming it's not already there and I missed it) some kind of map overlay that shows where the events are happening. I don't mind working my way to the right level, but it's hard to do when you have to be close to the event in question to even see it starting up.

I think my favorite moment on that escort quest is when there's a roadblock ahead, my group's getting ready to fight it, and then the guy gets distracted and runs off to the side.

He then proceeds to lead us up the cliffs to the side, where there's ballistas to take out. So we slog through all that, and come down on the other side of the cliff and the roadblock.

The very first thing he does at that point is attack the roadblock we'd just circumvented.

Servers are down for 30 minutes...what are your thoughts so far? by -Faith-in Guildwars2

[–]denor 12 points13 points ago

I'm on the fence about the hearts too.

On the one hand, every one I've run into so far has had multiple ways you can build it up, some of which don't involve combat.

On the other hand, they feel grindy. I've got to stay in the same pretty small area, and while I have a lot of ways to contribute they all feel like they don't actually contribute that much. And unlike events, other people nearby can't help me.

At level 10, i've learned all the skills for every weapon I have so far. I feel like I want to try out new weapons or abilities but besides the traits and utility, there isn't much in the way of more weapon abilities

I ran into this too - if you get the chance, hit up a "weaponsmith" NPC merchant. I found a few weapons I hadn't mastered yet that way.
