What are ghost notes? by Chakkyin drums

[–]dirtytaters 1 point2 points ago

My guess is that he's talking about practicing control strokes and pullout strokes. These are double strokes where one of the notes is a grace note while the other is an accent to provide the most dynamic contrast all on the same hand. The control stroke is an accent followed by a ghost (R r L l) while the pullout strokes is a ghost followed by accent (r R l L). Note: it's good to have some familiarity with the Moeller Stroke in order to successfully master the pullout stroke while the control stroke is more about controlling your rebound. I like to practice these strokes by using paradiddles and moving the accent around to each note. This way, you practice the control and pullout on the "diddle" (r l R r l r L l and r l r R l r l L)

How to get dead-on recordings? by Kryhavokin drums

[–]dirtytaters 0 points1 point ago

My guess would be that you're not getting the metronome at the exact tempo of the song but close or the metronome is not starting right on the downbeat. This would explain why it would start off sounding okay but get progressively worse as the song goes on. What tempo have you been setting for "All the Small Things?"

Does drummit have any love for a custom acoustic-to-electric conversion? by Subs2in drums

Thanks for the reply. I've been looking at Roland all mesh kits but doing something like this seems like a much better option.

A quick question in regards to the law by kjjj184in drums

[–]dirtytaters 14 points15 points ago

Look up the laws on noise violations in your town. A lot of towns have laws prohibiting loud noise after something like 10 p.m. but until then, it should be fair game. However, even if this is the case, I would recommend trying to come to some friendly agreement as no good will come from a malevolent relationship with a neighbor. But if she repeatedly turns down a compromise and your town's laws are in your favor, I'd play to my heart's content.

Had a really bad practice last night by rythmlessin drums

Push aside the emotion and let your own words sink in:

which is abnormal for me.

Everyone has their shitty moments but those are what make the truly extraordinary sessions so extraordinary. All you can do is realize you're human and get back into the practice room!

How should I practice drums out of a book? by His-Dudenessin drums

[–]dirtytaters 1 point2 points ago

First of all, it never hurts to consistently go over rudiments. In regards to the books the only the thing limiting how you use them is your creativity. It's always good to go through the book in the manner as intended by the author and then take it in directions that interest you. For example, I like to use different pages of Syncopation as melody lines over top of different hand/feet ostinatos or you could even use some of the "systems" from New Breed and switch the melodies in that book for pages of Syncopation. Just do the exercises at a speed that is comfortable and where you can fit every note perfectly in time and build up from there. Only bad habits come from practicing at a fast speed when everything isn't lining up. Also searching the books on google should yield a lot of people's different techniques for using them. Like I said, your creativity is the only limit.

Lifting & Running Discussion by johnnyt918in running

[–]dirtytaters 0 points1 point ago

High weight/low rep like eric said. And make sure to fit squats and dead lifts into your workout. Nothing builds strength in the lower body like these lifts yet most people rarely do them. As with all lifting, form is critical to preventing injury and actually getting results so make sure you know what you're doing before attempting these.

Glad to see some Stanton Moore love on here. That cat single-handedly inspired me to take up drums. Another good one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs3wHqhWQPE

Do you have any guilty pleasure bands? by tanneraglein Music

[–]dirtytaters 0 points1 point ago

I felt the same way when their first album came out. Shortly after, I noticed they were playing at a festival I was going to so I figured I'd check them out. Holy shit, I've never seen a worse live band. I honestly couldn't even listen to the album after that.

i have a simple question, how do you count a single drag tap? by africanwhale9in drums

[–]dirtytaters 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The single drag tap should be counted as eighth notes (One and Two and...) but I assume the part that's throwing you off is the drag at the beginning. This is where your ears come in handy and you just need to listen to how you're playing and make sure that the drag flows tightly without overtly taking up any other note values. So it should be: 1(llR) and(L) 2(rrL) and(R) etc.

DubFX, genius on a mic and not much else. by segroegin Music

I think OP's referring to the simplistic setup DubFX uses (mic and loop station) rather than insinuating that he's not talented in other areas.

Not if you make your own. It's actually quite easy, all you need is a food dehydrator and a nice lean cut of steak. Saves you a lot of money in the long run, too.

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Honestly, I like Jonsi's voice a lot and think it adds to the already comforting vibe of most of their songs. And the whole "hopelandic" thing doesn't bother me personally since I don't speak Icelandic so I really can't tell the difference. To me, it's just another soothing layer of sound.

Yeah, it's unique but that doesn't mean it's good.

I agree with these sentiments, in general.

Reddit - what songs stop you in your tracks because you find them so haunting ? by lughnasadhin Music

[–]dirtytaters 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nina Nastasia - What's Out There. I think it's haunting in that it gives me similar vibes to things like the film Coraline and such; a subdued creepiness and brooding, to an extent.

If you can find the album recording I would highly suggest giving that a listen as it's obviously higher quality than this recording.
