They manage to take one of my favorite albums and make it boring.

Too much explaining going on...

This "hipster metal" bullshit is really starting to piss me off.

Haha same here. The bands listed in the OP are like my favorite bands. Guess I gotta get some girls jeans and do the swoop hair. That's still what they do, right? I don't even know anymore.

Seriously. They're burly, bearded metal dudes who look like they don't give a fuck.

I'm with you on that, buddy. I'm an occassional black metal fan, but from my experience, black metal has the most elitest fans of any genre. It's like any black metal that doesn't have terrible production or dabbles in a another genre is blasphemy.

For what it's worth, I celebrate WitTR's entire catalog. I think they actually got better with time. Their symphonic, atmospheric stuff is truly beautiful music, but it still has that feeling of foreboding/sadness that I dig.

Add Nachtmystium, Valkyra, and Twilight to your list of awesome black metal that is uncool to like.

Why should he have to be present? Why should he have to prove he is not the father? What happened to innocent until proven guilty? This flies in the face of common sense.

Well obviously, we have a rapist...

I play in drop-C. I use .13s. I've gone lighter, but it sounds shitty.

Dear dumbasses on Craigslist: An Epiphone is not a Gibson and a Squier is not a Fender!

discord 3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]

oOoh, gotcha. Yea, that is annoying. Epiphones do not even say Gibson on them. There is no excuse.

I'd rather people learn of my band by our quality music than by our "outrageous" manner of dress or "omg so totally random" actions. Good art speaks for itself. The best musicians I know are super humble. They're not insecure about their talent so they don't feel the need to look down on those up-and-coming. My favorite bands I've learned of through word of mouth, not on the cover of some trendy magazine.

Admittedly, I'm very biased. When the girl pants-wearing swoop-hair kids started appearing in the metal scene, it was a parade of shit music. Kids put more effort into their look than their practice. Suddenly, being effeminate is the hip thing in metal again--it's glam rock all over again. To me, that is the antithesis of metal.

When it comes down to it, I pretty much want every guitar.

Same. My latest GAS is a carbon fiber acoustic. I don't see myself having an extra 2 grand any time soon, unfortunately.

I dig it, too. It looks more like a classical instrument than an electric guitar. I wonder how it sounds bowed.

What the fuck is wrong with you 'metal players' and your guitar rigs?

discord 2 points3 points 1 month ago[-]

The other side of this coin is the guitarist who can afford all the best gear but doesn't pay attention to the over all sound quality / articulation.

I can't tell you how many bands I've played with where I thought to myself, "Wow, look at that setup! That's going to sound awesome." Then they take that stage and it's just this super loud wall of mud. Distortion is great... until you can no longer make out the notes.

Just to offer my own anecdote, last time I saw Jesu, the guitar tone sounded like shit, but then again, he's going for more of an atmospheric thing, not exactly a common "metal" sound.

I think you're both right in a way.

I think the takeaway from the original post is that you need the "right" gear, though not necessarily expensive gear. I empathize with his "why doesn't my Line 6 sound good" annoyance. There is an abundance of those questions. But throwing money at it isn't the only solution. There is a threshold--you're never going to get the digital distortion to sound like an over driven tube and that Crate cab is probably going to sound like shit, no matter what head you've got (sweeping generalization). But that doesn't mean to you need 4 grand for a Diezel.

In my estimation, $1000 is the buy-in for acceptable metal tone (to my ears). At that price you can likely find a JCM 8/900 2x12 combo on Craig's List or some other respectable classic amp. Throw an overdrive pedal in front and you're good to go. Short of that, you could get lucky and find a well-loved V4 for around $500 and pair that with a 1960a/b cab.

You can gain stage all you want, but unless you're playing treble-y black metal or 80s shred, you won't be melting many faces with cheap gear.

I honestly only had this revelation / achieved this ability about year ago. For years I made the false estimation that more distortion = heavier sound, when it's actually a combination of so many things: proficiency, string gauge, tuning, attack, pickups, tone knob, amp EQ, etc.
