Stortinget snudde om narkorazzia på skolene - Hurra! by junglin norge

[–]eevar 10 points11 points ago*

Question about feriepenger... by brt_nedin Norway

[–]eevar 0 points1 point ago

If you wait until next year to take out your feriepenger you won't need to pay taxes on them.

This is false. You pay taxes on your total income, "feriepenger" included.

When your employer hands out vacation money without a tax deduction, that's because you already paid those taxes the year before, either throughout the year or as a "baksmell".

I'm looking to lose weight but keep my money. by Laney67in Frugal

[–]eevar 0 points1 point ago

Losing weight is mostly about calorie intake, you need to eat less. Eat lots of vegetables. Protein rich food is supposed to make you feel fuller/for longer. You also need some fat to function properly.

In order to keep muscle mass while losing weight, you really should do strength training. Search locally for YMCA gyms or other low cost alternatives (with strength equipment). Body weight exercises can't really measure up weight lifting.

A good program is also a must. Pick up "Starting strength" by Mark Rippetoe (currently 3rd ed., earlier should work fine), or consider the Stronglifts 5x5 program. Make sure you learn the exercises properly.

Norway killer says no one would call him insane if he were 'bearded jihadist' by autof5in worldnews

[–]eevar 0 points1 point ago

He doesn't want people to consider him insane because he wants his political views to be taken seriously.

Perhaps. But he's obviously more than just a little out of touch when he thinks killing a bunch of children will aid any cause. Breivik actually expected to be hailed as a hero for his actions (or so he claims, anyway).

Just point me in the right direction. I'll do the research. by Precisionistin Database

ETL is the process of populating a data warehouse with data from operational systems. While both involve transferring/updating data, your issue isn't really about ETL. There might be some lessons about copying/updating data in the ETL field, though.

Kimball's books are great; I'd add this one to your reading list. Probably a better starting point on data warehouses than the ETL one.

IMO your problem is hardly database related, even if data stored in a db are involved. It's a pure SW development/programming task outside of the realm of database administration.

Start off by looking for off-the-shelf solutions, i.e. check with your POS supplier if they already support this.

Failing that, you need to build your own software for pushing updates to the remote locations. A service installed on every POS that periodically polls the central server for pricing info is probably your best bet (perhaps not ideal, but should be a serviceable solution for the short run). I'd send a JSON document with every local SKU and expect one back containing current prices -- or ask for changes since last update if you have a lot of products. Make sure nothing stupid happens when a SKU isn't found or the request fails.

Make sure you understand every relevant piece of the POS db's schema. Will updating the base price do, or do you need to consider discounts, currency, taxes and whatnot? You also need to be sure you're asking the right server for pricing info (proper authentication, e.g. something PKI based), and that you have instrumentation in place to notice if a remote location isn't asking for price data.

Hey frugal, I'm a 19y/o construction worker that makes $10 an hour and blow my money on useless things... by frank14752in Frugal

[–]eevar 5 points6 points ago

From what I gather you don't have any fixed expenses, it's all just spending. In that case, you should be able to set aside way more than 10%.

Eat out less, or at least cheaper. Consider buying a bag or two of groceries every week to pay for rent and keep your parents happy. Inviting friends over for homemade pizza is never wrong. Also, 300 every weekend out sounds like a lot.

A client wants to pay me with shares of his company. What should I know? by vunein finance

[–]eevar 4 points5 points ago

The guy just wants you to work on his pipe dream for free. He'll be able to withdraw whatever equity he's sunk into the company as a salary (or by thinning out your options before they vest, or something like that). You'll find lots of these deals on Craigslist, programming forums and anywhere programmers go looking for work.

If the idea is spectacular and you think this guy actually has the drive and skill to take it somewhere, and if you're fed up with your current business, you could consider it, but I'd want a full partnership. Most startups fail though, even with awesome teams and great ideas. If he's the least bit secretive about any aspect of the project, that's a large warning sign and you should run away screaming.

You probably want to read any content you can find about startups on ycombinator.com and similar sites.

New version of Apache HTTP Server released by sidcool1234in programming

[–]eevar 0 points1 point ago

I'd go with forwarding every request as-is, then add a rule or two for any static contents you might want to serve. Been a while since I looked at the nginx manual, but shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

You probably also want to add an X-forwarded-for header from nginx, and make Apache understand it using mod_remoteip::RemoteIPHeader.

New version of Apache HTTP Server released by sidcool1234in programming

[–]eevar 1 point2 points ago

Sticking nginx in front of Apache is well worth a little extra configuration and setup, especially if you're low on resources.

Even if you only served dynamic content, you'd need fewer Apache processes. It would get to do it's thing and then offload all the IO to nginx instead of waiting around while data flows to the client.

Make sure to enable keep-alive on Apache if you've turned it off for some reason.

New version of Apache HTTP Server released by sidcool1234in programming

[–]eevar 1 point2 points ago

Consider using nginx as a reverse proxy in front of your apache+php install. Apache gets to finish up quickly, while nginx serves your slow clients. And do use nginx to serve any static contents.

Could you spare a minute and help my friend's parents take on the Norwegian Government? by akillerin Norway

Actually, they need to move asap. You're not allowed to buy farmland and not live on it.

Hey guys. Need a quick estimate of how much vacationing in Norway would cost in total for a week. by Olive_Gardenin Norway

[–]eevar 0 points1 point ago

Other than that, you should be clear to tent wherever you like.

You're not allowed to tent on farmland. Or even move across it unless the ground is frozen and covered in snow.

If there are houses in the vicinity you need permission from the land owner to stay more than a single night.

Pot legalization gets enough signatures for Colo. ballot: The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol said Friday morning that it had turned in more than enough valid signatures to get an initiative on the ballot this November in Colorado. by Orangutanin news

Being able to regulate the market might be the best argument, at least to some of us. That doesn't invalidate other arguments, though.

We know that a lot of the population seems to give these kinds of statements more weight than cold hard logic. Ignoring those people is a huge mistake IMO.

Consider the Marlin XS7 in 7mm-08 with a Redfield 3-9x40 scope. It's light, cheap, durable and accurate, with a great trigger.

The caliber has enough power for anything in NA (except the large bears), low recoil and very good ballistics.
