Robotic fish monitor pollution in harbours by el_blokoin robotics

This is a great idea, but I wonder how good these robots are at avoiding boats. Next: nanobot plankton?

Google funds computer teachers and Raspberry Pis in England by cLeaRY101in unitedkingdom

As a parent with an IT background, I have always been disappointed at the unambitious content of ICT topics taught in UK schools.

My hopes were briefly raised when one teacher introduced Logo programming, but this didn't last long.

Teaching kids how to use MS Office or PhotoShop is useful, but it's only skimming the surface of what should be included in ICT education.

I've played with Arduino and Processing with a view to encouraging my son to learn about these, but he's not inclined to do so because, I think, he takes his study guidance from school topics. (and he's very busy playing WoW, etc)

As for the RasPi, I was very enthusiastic up until the mishandled launch. I'll wait for availability to settle down and hardware problems to be resolved before I reconsider getting one.

Rhino poaching is now a risk at UK zoos. Time to kill the demand for horn in China. by el_blokoin conservation

[–]el_bloko[S] 1 point2 points ago

This makes me so MAD! The superstitious belief that rhino horn has special medicinal properties cannot be allowed to continue. Much of Chinese medicine based on the use animal products is so obviously fake, largely by an association of an animal's potency. This is the kind of belief that belongs in fairy tales and fantasy fiction, not in reality.

The Chinese government should do more to stamp out the trade.

BBC News - Fish farming in a high-rise world (New York) by el_blokoin SelfSufficiency

This kind of local food production is great, and I hope it catches on in a big way, world wide. I have my own home-grown vegetables and fruit, but not on a scale that provides all my needs, all year round.

One of the better BBC science shorts of late. Informative, well-structured and not patronisingly dumbed-down. Perhaps best of all, it's narrated by a real scientist.

The Catholic church and women (nuns) with an opinion - "I don't think the bishops have any idea of what they're in for" by yellowdwarfin worldnews

[–]el_bloko 0 points1 point ago*

That's the kind of thing. It's a pity it is only a legend. It was featured in BBC Radio4 "Book of the Week", abridged from "The Popes: A History" by John Julius Norwich. Highly amusing.

How about a woman for Pope? That would bring a few changes.

I see your point, but at least resources like the NASA State of Flux web site go some way to negating that propaganda. Perhaps we can make some deniers see sense.

Neither of those arguments is reason to doubt the overall increase in global temperatures and the implications of that.

  • A few exceptions to an obvious trend do not make the trend go away.

  • Whether natural or man-made, the changes pose the same threat and require the same changes from us to mitigate their effect.

Let's see the climate skeptics try to argue against this evidence.

Light pollution 'saturates' UK's night skies by el_blokoin space

[–]el_bloko[S] 0 points1 point ago

Reducing light pollution would inspire more interest in science within the general public, boosting the number of students studying science-based subjects in higher education. And then there's the huge savings in energy consumption. Why wouldn't we do this?

NASA scientist Dr James Hansen says no to coal-fired power by el_blokoin climate

Does this really mean anything? And why does the website try to launch some Java immediately after the test completed? I know it's EFF, but I dislike this behaviour.

UK Government plans to boost Internet snooping by el_blokoin privacy

If we wind the clock back 20 years, would anyone have said it was OK for officials to open our mail? Or to insist that we wrote the sender's address on the envelope? Or to compile lists of people with whom we communicated by mail?

So why should it be OK now?
