Sadly, roythunder was not master of his domain.

Can someone recommend a plumber? by munttedin brisbane

[–]europorn 1 point2 points ago

I live in the western suburbs and use Centenary Plumbing whenever I can. A plumber is never going to be cheap - whether you get value for money is more relevant.

Anyone else got a tummy bug at home ATM? by liveat60fpsin brisbane

[–]europorn 1 point2 points ago

There does appear to be some sort of gastric bug going around. All my kids, my wife and myself have had it. The vicious cycle started about three weeks ago. A couple of co-workers and their children have also had it.

In fact, just stay away from Dallas altogether.

I'm too picky, what's a really good sci-fi novel or novella by wonderweirdoin scifi

World out of Time is one of my all-time favourites. It doesn't get enough love IMHO.

I believe it had a very limited theatre release. I had to watch it on DVD.

What is the title of this sci-fi movie? by wirtherin scifi

[–]europorn 2 points3 points ago*

Could it be Flash Gordon?

Edit: Or perhaps L'umanoide.

Both have "Darth-esqe" villains and torture scenes.

What's the most unique sci-fi story premise you've come across? (possible spoilers, obviously) by 263kelvinin scifi

[–]europorn 7 points8 points ago

Stephen Baxter's Space from the Manifold trilogy was pretty unique. I shall refrain from spoiling. Time from the same trilogy was also pretty unique but less enjoyable (IMHO). Origin was just weird.

Reddit, which book(s) would you like to see as a movie? by manueslaperain scifi

[–]europorn 4 points5 points ago

I've been reading his stuff lately. I'd almost prefer that the Revelation Space story arc was produced as a high quality tv series - it's more likely to come to fruition in that medium and I think the material would break up well into an episodic format.

The next 'grok' - invented words from SFF in everyday conversation. by udupendrain printSF

[–]europorn 2 points3 points ago

I think two terms coined by Neal Stephenson have a fair chance or catching on (both from Diamond Age):

rod logic: Computers based on mechanical nanotech as opposed to microcircuitry (or nanocircuitry).

toner war: describes what happens when two nanobot armies go up against each other - the air is left polluted with a haze of "toner" - the aerosolised remains of the losing nanobots.

Can anyone explain the ending of '2001: A Space Odyssey' to me? by lvhitchin printSF

[–]europorn 0 points1 point ago*

I second the recommendation to stick to the first two novels in the series. 2061 And 3001 were just milking the premise and (IMHO) destroy the sense of wonder that the original books bring to mind.

Aokigahara Suicide Forest [Soft Spoken] [Accent] by MartMillzin asmr

[–]europorn 1 point2 points ago

Thanks - I got nice, mild, sustained tingling from that one.

Overall a very interesting video. The narrator made some really evocative statments (to me anyway):

"In most cases, if you follow the tape, you find something at the end."

"If you stare at a suicide corpse it can't attack you".

Nice nightmare fuel there....

If ASMR = cocaine, this video = crack. It definitely gave me ASMR but also made me a little twitchy.
