Work Is Work: Why Free Internships Are Immoral by ElBehin TrueReddit

[–]faet 0 points1 point ago

Because unpaid internships are suppose to be an extension of learning. If you're unpaid internship has you running coffee/filing papers/doing 'crap work' you can sue for lost wages. As the company benefits directly from your work.

The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded;

Junior level staffers are providing something to the company in exchange for pay. The company benefits from them directly.

similar to training which would be given in an educational environment;

What minimum wage buys, then and now: 56 hours paid the rent in 1950, 109 hours paid the rent in 2010 by ratjeain politics

[–]faet 14 points15 points ago

'50 - Gas: $0.27 or 22 minutes
'10 - Gas: $2.78 or 23 minutes
So +1minute. Not much of a difference.

'50 - Rent: $42 or 56 hours
'10 - Rent: $789 or 109 hours

As far as rent, The average American house size has more than doubled since the 1950s. So shouldn't rent double as well? 56h *2 = 112h vs 109h. About the same.

truegaming, I'd like your thoughts. My brother-in-law wants to open a PC/console arcade business. by stone500in truegaming

[–]faet 0 points1 point ago*

I've seen a business similar to this succeed in a small area. It was tied to a PC repair shop/game store and they mostly hosted tournaments. People would come in when they needed something to fix their computer or a new controller. And they would offer crap to help xbox's from RRODing. They would then advertise the tournaments they had. Entrance would be ~10$ winner got (some PC parts/game/store credit/ or small cash prize).

Otherwise gametime would be very cheap(weekends)/free(weekdays). This would get lots of people into the store. Where they would offer to convert to a 'small tourny'. "Hey you 4 people wanna do best of ____ for 1h? 5$ entrance winner gets $20 of credit". People would meet up to play after school and hang out. Probably buy a few soda and move on. Had they charged, for weekdays, they probably wouldn't have had anyone show up. The employees would also play with customers when there were not enough. Ie, 1 kid walks in, has halo at home but no one to play with. So employee would do 1v1 with him.

They would sell new releases* and have tournaments on release days. They would also do 'modding' for you. For instance, they'd re-cable your PC so they'd be hidden. *They would get ~10-20 copies of new hot titles. No non-AAA games. Just "COD/BF/Halo/etc".

Everything worked well together. Tournaments were a nice boost of revenue. Especially release days. Playing for free was a good way to get people into the store, which would lead to more sales as they'd talk to people who "got that new game" or "did this to my PC", they could advertise said tournaments and show off new merch they got in to the store. And they had the bread and butter "we'll fix that virus for you!" which got them sales to less savvy computer people.

They also sold soda at 2$/20oz, which I'm sure they bought at costco for far cheaper.

basically though, he needs some 'backup business' to support the rest of it.

I couldn't really get into it. I bought it at the store. And it took about 2 hours to install. The DRM bitched about something or other, or activation servers were overloaded. It bitched about a daemon tools. Once it was installed the save file got corrupted after 1h. It would keep crashing. So I restarted, then it got corrupted shortly after the first big daddy. So I quit. I feel I'd have enjoyed it had everything gone smoother.

You can buy/sell gold for money on the RMAH. So people will be willing to sell "good items" for gold. Then sell the gold for money. There will always be some who won't spend real money for items, but will have gold to spend. It'd be dumb for traders to limit their items to one market. Also, the gold auction house will probably be cheaper to list on.

What online brokerage service do you use and why? (Scottrade, Etrade, Ameritrade, etc.) by evlukein personalfinance

[–]faet 1 point2 points ago

What kind of trading do you want to do. If it's options, people suggest one thing. If it's day trading people suggest another. I have ameritrade. They offer a bunch of free ETFs. This lets me put $1000 each month into the account and investing it into a fund without getting nickeled and dimed. They also have a nice Dividend Reinvestment Program. So if I get 100$ in dividends, I can buy more shares for free, rather than getting nickeled and dimed again.

Opportunity to buy a condominium by zombieburglurin personalfinance

[–]faet 1 point2 points ago

I have a condo. I'm not really a fan of condos. Once I sell my condo (underwater right now) I'll probably never buy another one. Things you should know about. Any problems with the building, are problems the HOA (you/tenants) will have to pay for (Unless it's a new building and the builder covers it for a year or so). My company does work on a lot of buildings. One building is a condo, it has asbestos and is falling apart (value engineered). The estimated cost to get the building "safe" would cost each tenant ~$40k. The tenants who were on the board and asked for the estimate bailed/sold their condo before the estimate/problems were known. Now, people can't sell. And if they decide to go forward with the work it will put some people out on the street as they won't be able to pay for the $40k. So basically, the current hoa board has to decide on letting the building fall into the river it is next to. Or put ~8-12 residents out on the street.

What do you think of competitive co-op? by Talonisin truegaming

[–]faet 0 points1 point ago

I'm rather competitive. I'll find something to 'win at' even if it's just for me. Even playing Lego Starwars with my fiance. I need ALL THE COINS. Even though they basically go into the same pot.

I'm not a fan of sharing loot in some coops. But, I can normally remedy it by picking a different armor class. This is mostly from playing with friends. In a random game with strangers in say D2, I'll snag everything and anything I can. It got kinda old. Especially once everyone started using grabbit.

What are the rules regarding FNM promos? Once place I went to had 30+ people show up for FNM. But, they'd only give out 3 cards. First place was allowed to pick from all. 2nd/3rd couldn't pick from "money cards" (mostly dual lands). The rest got ebayed. Do they have to give out all cards?

[–]faet 1 point2 points ago*

:\ USC. They've been trying to start their FSAE Program for 8+ years. They did legends for a while, but that stopped 9+ years ago or so. Story I remember is someone hit a wall and totaled a car, now insurance is outrageous. When I was there people would talk about a Baja program as well. First week would have 20 students interested. 2nd week had 10. 3rd week was down to 3 and by the end of the month it was canceled. The only program I know of that did well was the Solar Boat, which I'm not sure is still around. When I was there the faculty member with a SAE membership was retiring. Which is something your sponsor needs.

I ended up transferring to a school with an established racing program (baja/fsae). It was much more enjoyable. The school also matched donations/sponsorships. IE, I find someone who donates $5000 school matches it for $10k to be usable. Also, we had team members who could get a lot of materials (steel/fiber/etc) at cost.

If you do get it setup. Your first meeting will have 50+ kids. Expect to be down to less than 10 by the end of the first month and continue to dwindle. Then expect some to 'get interested again' when you're talking about going to competition. Also, your first car will probably take 2 years to build before you will be able to take it to competition. A lot of schools will re-use designs/things to save time/money. Experienced/well funded teams smal teams can churn out a car every year assuming they don't change too much. It's also harder to get sponsors for a team that hasn't run in a while as you may fail and their 'name' won't get seen. The same goes if you're "just doing it for the experience".

Question about "upgrading" to Collector's Edition by thereisnosheeplevelin Diablo

They probably won't give you a standard key. I did the same thing with WoW back when Cata was released and was told they just delete the old key and wouldn't give me a 2nd. So I just put the CE on my alt account as I really only cared about the art book.

It would not be a swap, it would actually replace and lose the original key.

Prison Industries: "Don't Let Society Improve or We Lose Business" by cyberdyno2in politics

[–]faet 0 points1 point ago

We've seen two judges take bribes from a real estate mogul to send juveniles to be incarcerated.

FTFY. Had he been building prisons for the state would it be unreasonable to assume he'd do the same thing?

They should fix their shit. If you it would cost you $4000 to install a new AC, but you'd earn that back through savings in 5 years, would you do it? I would, after I saved up the $4000. The problem is a lot of states budget a set amount for improvements. Say 100k/prison. Private prisons do the same. except they pool money. So Prison A gets 200k one year. Prison B gets 200k the next. This lets them buy more efficient equipment/bigger improvements to save money over the long haul. The government will give 100k to prison A. Which isn't enough for new equipment, but enough to repair what they have. Since most government budgets are use or lose (if you don't spend it all you get less next year). Rather than "save the money" they just blow it on little things. Could the government change that? Yup, will they? Probably not as they've been doing it for years. If the private sector saves 40k in a budget, someone gets a bonus, incentives!

There is something very wrong with providing financial incentives for an increased prisoner population

The CA prison guard union does the same thing though. They lobby for harsher rules/penalties. They donate money to campaigns for more pay from tax payers. CA houses more inmates than CCA. CA spends more money on inmates than CCA earns. Except rather than "A CEO" getting a bonus for housing another 1000 prisoners it's a Union head.

Ameritrade has a 100 or so commission free ETFs you can invest in. One being VTI which is vanguards total market fund, which has a low (the lowest?) expense ratio.

Otherwise you'll be paying brokerage feeds of 5-10$ as max says. Which for a 10$ round trip. Your stock would need to go up ~5% just to break even. 245*1.05-5= $252.25

Prison Industries: "Don't Let Society Improve or We Lose Business" by cyberdyno2in politics

[–]faet -1 points0 points ago*

Think of it this way.

CA/AZ/HI has 12k people it needs to imprison. They have 1 jail that can hold 10k. They can either have over crowded prisons. Or they can open a new jail. Lets say they build another jail to hold 10k prisoners. Each jail is at 60% occupancy and costs X amount to run. Jails have fixed costs. You always need to staff a set number of guards/electric/etc regardless of the number of prisoners. The only thing that would change are food/water/health costs. So if it costs X to run a jail. Each state will now be paying 2X, for a total of 6X.

This is were the private prison comes in. They'll tell AZ/CA/HI they'll take 3k of their prisoners. They build/buy/lease 1 jail in the cheapest state (AZ) that holds 10k prisoners. Each of the 4 jails are at 90% capacity. And cost for each state is 1.3X (3/12 +Profit). The 1.3X is less than the 2.0X each state would pay to run a new jail. The private company saves even more money because all 3 states worth of prisoners are held some place cheap. CA has a strong prison guard union (who also lobbies for harsher laws). CA/HI also have higher land fees/taxes. AZ has cheaper labor.

Pay is less sure. But," Prison guards in California enjoy an annual salary of $73,428 with only a high school education, and with overtime they can surpass the income of California judges, police and even the state attorney.". Now lets talk about this. Average household income in Eloy AZ is 31k. So if they paid the average household income of the area (4 of 6 AZ prisons are in eloy) is that "Next to nothing". Average pay in San Diego (CCA has 1 prison there) is 60k. If you move 3000 prisoners from CA to AZ you're saving a good chunk of money in just salary. But yes, you're moving X jobs from CA to AZ and paying "one person to do the same job for less".

Additionally, private prisons are willing to invest more into the prisons to save money. They are willing to install more efficient equipment because if it pays for itself after 4 years, why not? With government prisons they don't care about that as taxes/the state will just pay for whatever. And if the government wants to work on the prison, there is a lot more bureaucracy/politics involved. Additionally, if prisoners abuse privileges (flushing toilets 55 times in an hour) the private prison will put on a timer so you can only flush once/5min. 12 vs 55 gal/water per abusive prisoner per hour. Finally, they'll recycle more. A lot of AZ prisons have Greywater systems to reuse water.

To the guy who said private prisons overcrowd. He should compare it to CA. Like the rest of California's penal system, the California Institution for Men struggles with chronic overcrowding. The prison currently operates at 200% of its capacity; with less personal space among inmates, tensions rise, making life more dangerous for prisoners and guards alike. " It's getting better, but still crowded.

As far as food being "lesser quality". I've visited during meal time and noticed nothing "lower quality". Rice, fresh veggies (cabbage/carrots/etc), and meat. Unless he has a source, I'm not really sure what to say.
