Rep. Boehner couldn't meet with Obama to talk about tax cuts because of a 'scheduling conflict.' Turns out said conflict was a press conference to blast the democrats for not sitting down to talk about tax cuts. by jjs774in politics

You only need a super majority in the Senate. House members can't filibuster, and in a democracy you should only need a majority vote to get most things done anyway.

Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star, or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?

For what its worth I gave you an upvote.

I agree with almost everything you said about dealing with suffering. The problem I feel arises with this idea that suffering ends when one achieves enlightenment. Maybe your own personal suffering ends, but many people have become enlightened and this has not ended the suffering going on in the world. Its one thing to be a good person by causing as little suffering as possible while trying to improve the lives of others. But real understanding involves accepting every truth of life. Seeing that the duality of love/hate, life/death, waves/particles, etc. is all part of one continuous process that we're all part of. To claim that everything is made out love and kindness puts is like putting blinders on. Rather than overcoming duality, imo it only focuses on one side of that dualism. I feel this view of the world ends up doing more harm than good. It reminds me of how Christians claim that God is all-good and all-powerful. This view ends up leading a lot of Christians to think that when something bad happens, it must be divine justice and the person or persons suffering must deserve it somehow.

I appreciate your politeness too. Its not very often you get to have a civil discussion on the internet :).

In regards to your question, I honestly don't think there is a solution to the world's problems. Even if we established a utopia on Earth, the Sun will destroy the planet in a few billion years. And even if we manage to get out of the solar system, some day every star will die and there won't be any more fuel to create new ones. Entropy has had us doomed from the start, but at the same time, entropy is the reason life even exists at all. All of the atoms in our body came from stars that have been long dead. None of us would be here if those stars didn't grow old and die. The process of evolution involved billions of years of death and extinction so certain genes could propagate themselves. Even in your own life, the development of your personality and character is due to the suffering you've experienced.

One of the things that I've found appealing about Buddhism is how profound the idea that life is suffering. This truth goes beyond the human experience, because life is in fact, the product and continuing process of the universe's suffering. The only way we could end all suffering is if we somehow stopped the flow of time. But then what? We'd be dead, nothing would move at all. The only thing we can do is do the best we can and deal with our pain however we think is appropriate (meditation, drugs, etc.).

Thats the end of my little rant. I'd like to know your thoughts on the matter.

The fact is that love and kindness aren't the only emotions that exist in the world and isn't the only or even the primary motivating factor of events. I could refer to millions of terrible real-world situations and ask you if love was the main motivating factor. What about all the rapes that occur in the world every single day? Or how about the Holocaust? What about the systematic exploitation of the weak and impoverished by the rich and powerful? The vast majority of humanity live desperate, fearful lives. A lot of these people produce the goods that according to Mister Gyatso, "is due to the kindness of others". I don't mean to sound harsh, but how can a person honestly say that everything is made of love when so much pain and suffering exists in the world? That is the part that makes no sense to me.
