I found that map to be quite beautiful. What was the source? I would love to see the cartographer's take on California.

That story about government agents forcing a kid to eat chicken nuggets instead of the lunch her mom packed for her? Yeah, that’s bogus by schtumin offbeat

[–]freeseasy 25 points26 points ago

It seems to me that the mother's issue was that if the child only has the sack lunch available, the child will eat that sack lunch. Once the school officials hand that child a cafeteria-style meal in addition to the sack lunch, the 4 year old child (understandably) chooses to eat the less healthy chicken nuggets over the turkey sandwich.

Apartment gardening by heyitsconnorin gardening

I began by shopping at thrift stores and garage sales. Even if you can't find a pot, you might be able to find something that you can use as a pot with the addition of a few drainage holes. I once found a vase in the shape of a boot at a thrift store for $1.50, I took a ceramic drill bit to the bottom to create a couple of drainage holes and made a great pot for a cactus. Be creative.

Thoughts or pointers on growing Giant Pumpkins? by alizooin gardening

[–]freeseasy 2 points3 points ago

Those Pumpkins require a huge amount of calcium to grow strong rind. I plant my starts in a huge mound of soil heavily amended with both compost and a slightly excessive amount of bone meal.

Can someone help me take care of these plants? by adngalaxyin gardening

Wow. It looks like they just sold you rooted clones. Get yourself to the local home center, buy a bag of potting soil, plus pots of a similar size that have drainage holes (there should be plain terra cotta pots as cheap as .50 available), and plant everything that is inside of that small plastic basket into a pot full of good ol' soil. Keep some of the sphagnum to dress up the top layer of soil and you got yourself a stew going baby!

If a CFL is the only source of light your plants are getting, they will have a miserable existence. As light is your plants main source of "food," your starving them. They need to be near enough a window that they get at least an hour or two of direct sunlight each day, but are still in a well (naturally) lit room.

Putting them into direct outdoor sunlight has the potential to burn them. Plants are just as susceptible to UV radiation as you and I are and when they have not built up a tolerance to unfiltered sunlight, they can burn.

That "soil" isn't soil at all, it's just sphagnum moss which is commonly used to dress up the top of the soil layer, as well as providing a mulch to slow down water loss to evaporation. Under a layer of the sphagnum, you will find the soil. If you purchased the plants like that, in those containers, chances are that they are in the correct soil. If you ever attempt to replant those, the soil you need will be labeled "potting soil" and will be available at any home center.

Here's a look at my finger nails. For tangerines, I normally just stick a finger under the skin, create a tear along the equator that spans ~half the circumfrence and pull the whole fruit out of the skin. Tangerine skins are crazy loose.

Stop watering them every day. This is the best advice I can offer to anyone who is a beginning gardener.

Two of my planters were stolen today.. This is the first time anything like this has happened to me. Guess I just wanted to share my frustration with some people who get it. by shadeofpalmsin gardening

I run a demonstration garden in my city, the goal of which is to increase the number of local gardeners. Over the last few years I have had dozens of plants stolen from my garden, some of them were dug up from the ground. At first my initial reaction is to get mad, but eventually I can't help but be happy that someone out there is growing my plants. It may seem weird, but if more people are gardening, I feel as if I won, even if they are gardening on my dime. I'm sure it wont make you feel better to hear my opinions on people thieving from me, but at least you know your not alone in getting your plants stolen from you.

The Source is an awesome read. It really turned me on to Michner. After reading The Source, I spent the next year or so deep in Michner.

My point is that I'm not in Berkley, but I saw that you were. I went to school in Riverside, CA. Plus my Mrs. Bennet retired in '96, if that narrows it down for you.

Just wanted to let you know that my previous cat, Guenhwyvar was the most badass pet I ever had. He truly lived up to his name. Also, thanks for stealing my attention away from boring old Mrs. Bennet in 12th grade English.

Let's talk Blue Crush. by DiaperPartyin TrueFilm

the deeper subtexts of the film

Are you talking about this movie? Do you think there is much depth to that movie at all? I don't mean to offend, but when I forced myself to sit through that film I was sure that the goal of that movie was to siphon money from the pockets of 14-20 year old girls. Do I need to watch this film over again? (Please say no).
