IBM bans Siri at work. by pspace-completein technology

[–]hymrr -1 points0 points ago

So how long before a court requests the voice queries of some serial killer with an iPhone. Apple can't exactly refuse in that case but it would be a PR disaster, I'm sure it's in Apples own interests to get rid of such records even if it has commercial value.

One guy's story about his mother's WOW addiction by --the--rust--belt--in Games

[–]hymrr 57 points58 points ago

As sad as this is, there are people addicted to TV, sex, eating chocolate, shopping, cleaning, Reddit.

Just like MMO's these things are not inherently bad but they come with an added danger for people sensitive to addiction. I'm not sure if there is a clear distinction between exploiting mechanisms that can trigger addiction and simply delivering compelling gameplay meant to keep something interesting for longer periods.

Some people got addicted to Pac-man.

As an engineer, I will try to explain why Diablo 3's always-on requirement has very little to do with DRM and everything to do with hacking. by wrightstuffin Games

[–]hymrr 2 points3 points ago

DRM is any technology that inhibits uses of digital content that are not desired or intended by the content provider.

Hack and cheat prevention also classifies as DRM.

Your claim that piracy prevention wasn't an additional incentive for Blizzard is naive. Should I remind you that Blizzard took SIX years to release an official no-cd patch for Warcraft III? anti-piracy definitely is at the top of their agenda.

[Rumour] WiiU Information Possibly Leaked - Price, Launch Date, and Other Details by ev149in Games

[–]hymrr 5 points6 points ago

Wii U supports DirectX 11

Hah what a crappy made up rumour to start off with, so Wii U runs a Windows OS then, Michael Pachter's Dreamcast comment would be spot on in that case.

John Carmack is tired of the 24fps myth, believes there’ll be lots of 30fps games in next-gen consoles by JohnDioin Games

[–]hymrr 0 points1 point ago

But if games had motion blur as good as what cameras capture in reality, 24 fps games would look a lot smoother than they do now.

Johann Sebastian's Joust latest game cloned by IOS developers by TaurenNicholsin Games

[–]hymrr 0 points1 point ago

The one that first publicly shows the concept is the original I don't think there is ever any debate about that, the very same situation often occurred with Minecraft.

Adding elements also doesn't really make it less of a clone imo if the elements don't considerably change the gameplay.

Syfy and Trion Worlds Team Up to Tie MMO with TV Show by zifnabxarin Games

[–]hymrr 0 points1 point ago

So this is not going to be subscription based or did Microsoft change something about their xbox 360 policy that would allow it?

It's a nice concept but seeing how quick sci-fi shows can get canceled in recent memory Terra Nova, Stargate Universe, it may not be the best way to keep people interested in an MMO beyond an elaborate initial marketing campaign.

Why are most PC games developed with high-end PC's in mind? by rjromeroin Games

[–]hymrr 1 point2 points ago

The reverse of this statement is more true.

Skyrim runs perfectly fine on a 3 year old graphics card and cpu (assuming it wasn't a budget model)

Sure there are Crysis type games where maxing out every feature will demand a new SLI setup but these are the exceptions and for medium like you mention and 1080p an older PC will do fine with majority of games.

Leap 3D motion control system is 100 times more accurate than Kinect, will cost $69.99 by mehgandavidin Games

[–]hymrr 1 point2 points ago

The comparison is flawed.

It's 100 times more accurate in a very tiny volume of tracked space.

Oh it will certainly have awesome uses but this won't do a thing if you want to dance with two in front of the TV and that's what Kinect is for, not writing on a screen by holding a pen 5 inches from it.

Maybe in a couple years.

Jimquisition : You Should Be Mad at Diablo III's Always Online DRM by fanboy_killerin Games

[–]hymrr 23 points24 points ago

So customers that don't complain enough about bad practices are willing accomplices.

All while no single word is mentioned about professional press reviewing the game without even mentioning the pitfalls of the always online requirement, let alone condemning it.

Nice set of priorities.

Overkill working with Valve on “in-depth” Payday/Left 4 Dead “collaboration” by zakislamin Games

[–]hymrr 8 points9 points ago

Interesting development a month after Overkill was acquired by Starbreeze, makes me wonder if this was already planned or Starbreeze had a hand in the deal.

EDIT: looks like they need to update their website, the company info still states they are privately held, while all shares transferred to Starbreeze which is publicly traded.

UK charts: Max Payne 3 pips Diablo III to number one by Bladerunner12in Games

[–]hymrr 0 points1 point ago

So ehmn 10%? of the Digital Distributors willing to supply details are included, I think that counts as digital not included.

The absence of XBLA Minecraft shows Microsoft doesn't even want to contribute while they are usually first in line to show off.

UK charts: Max Payne 3 pips Diablo III to number one by Bladerunner12in Games

[–]hymrr 54 points55 points ago

The UK Leisure software charts is compiled by Chart Track, they intend to include digital sales but can't because the majority of digital game distributors don't supply records on units sold.

Even Blizzard only gives digital revenue details in quarterly reviews and Valve's outright prohibits sharing sales numbers on their platform without explicit permission.

UK charts: Max Payne 3 pips Diablo III to number one by Bladerunner12in Games

[–]hymrr 13 points14 points ago

Except that it didn't, Max Payne 3 sold 0 digital copies, Diablo 3 sold a ton that way and if you were to include the Annual Pass copies with those digital sales you get scary numbers, sure it said get Diablo 3 for free when you subscribe WoW for a year but given that it was a more expensive option than simply buying 6x 60 day subscription cards at retail I think it's fair to say that the Annual Pass only gave a Diablo 3 discount.

Blizzard sold at least 1.5 Milllion Annual Passes.

All of Assassin's Creed is on sale on Steam for 50$. And I'm not getting it. Because fuck you, Ubisoft. by FrankManicin Games

[–]hymrr 2 points3 points ago

Actually that doesn't make any sense, Ubisoft did what we wanted, they recognized it wasn't a good system and changed it.

To keep punishing them even after correcting that shows other companies they shouldn't even bother changing customer unfriendly DRM.

These are 3 things they have been insanely successful at yet competition still stands.

Why don't they add Portal feature to Minecraft? by one_of_redditin Games

[–]hymrr 2 points3 points ago

By Portal Feature you mean a gun that casts 2 connected portals I suppose?

It's available as a mod, why not add it to the default game? because the core gameplay doesn't ask for it.

Is it worth buying extra copies of limited editions of games at launch to sell later on? by Sonic_Dah_Hedgehogin Games

[–]hymrr 1 point2 points ago

There are extreme cases where people managed to get a couple Vanilla WoW collector's edition and were able to resist to turn them into a quick profit and made back their investment over 10 fold.

In general I don't think it's a wise bet though, publishers catch on too, if the demand is very high they will simply produce more, up to the point that they don't even sell out, stores don't really like to keep those big boxes around taking shelf space so they drop in price quick. In some cases I've seen the big collector's editions even get discounted below the price of the standard game.

Nvidia claims GeForce Grid processor will make game streaming "as common as renting a movie online" by IplayCoDandBFin Games

Bandwidth is not the only concern, the latency examples they provide is undoubtedly in ideal situations and many ISPs worldwide also still work with data transfer caps on home connections not suited for large amounts of streaming.

ZeniMax files trademark for Dragonborn by zakislamin Games

[–]hymrr 2 points3 points ago

Isn't this too late? the first use of Dragonborn in an Elder Scrolls game is in a book in Morrowind (2002), since then it has been picked up by other Fantasy games including Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 supplement book Races of the Dragon (2006).

But I doubt there wasn't any prior use, humans that descended from dragons isn't exactly a new concept in mythology.
